…..to 2011It’s been a big news year…• Tsunami in Japan

• Uprisings in Egypt & Tunisia starting the Arab spring• Bin Laden killed by US Forces• Prince William married Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey• Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies• The death of Kim Jong-il is announced• Adele released “21”• Final Harry Potter movie released• The rise of hacktivism• Google+ was launched in a bid to rival Facebook (let’s pretend we don’t know what the future holds)

This is Kylie (me!), pictured with her brothers and their girlfriends.

Kylie & her brothers grew up in Wagga Wagga, NSW. Kylie’s brothers still live there.

Here is the Wagga Wagga LGA.

The middle grey bit is the main town of Wagga Wagga, and there are scattered small towns in the surrounding area.

The total land area is a whopping 4,826km2.

Kylie lives in Ashfield, in the Inner West of Sydney NSW.

The land area of Ashfield is a much much smaller 8.29km2, but it’s closer to the shops.

They are very different in some ways, city and country but I (and many others) often wonder….

How different are they really?

What are the basic differences in demographic?

Is one safer than the other?

Is one… better... than the other?

These are the questions I am going to look at today.

Will the answers be surprising? Will they bring clarity to other wonderers of this age old question?

Can they influence people’s lifestyle decisions about where they want to live?

Step 1. Identify the problem.Well, we just did that.

Step 3. Understand the data.I have obtained data from the 2011 Australian Census and crime data from NSW Police.Step 2. Obtain the data.

What am I going to look at in terms of area?I will look at the local government area (LGA) for both Wagga Wagga and Ashfield.

What are the limitations in my data? Not all questions being answered in the census, so some data could be skewed. Mike Baird got council amalgamation happy in 2016 and LGA boundaries were changed, affecting my mapping slightly (which I haven’t ended up going with in this presentation anyway!).

What data do I want to look at?Not all data in the census is relevant to answer my questions so I will focus on a select few things. I am also focussing solelyon the year 2011 (in case you hadn’t picked that up already).

Step 4. Prepare the data.I pulled the desired data from the census information and put this into an excel file under the relevant LGA.Imported both the NSW Crime Data (RCI Offence by Month) and my excel file into Tableau and used a left outer join to link these together as there is more LGAs in the Crime Data table than in my table. In tableau, I hid information that wasn’t for 2011 and created new fields for each quarter as well as for the entire year.

o We can note both LGAs are close in median age, income & mortgage repayments although Ashfield is slightly higher in all.

o Ashfield is higher in all the median measures. Median rent is a much bigger gap with a weekly median of $220 in Wagga & $365 in Ashfield.

o Wagga has a larger population however we noted previously that the area is much larger so population density will be very different for each LGA.

o Both LGAs have more females than males, but the difference isn’t too dramatic.

o Ashfield seems to have a high concentration of middle aged people and seems to be following some kind of yoyo trend in child population. This could be due to people moving in and out of the area, which is probably much more prevalent than it is in Wagga.

o Wagga had some kind of baby boom for the 5-14 years age group

o Ashfield is much more culturally diverse – not a surprising finding, as Ashfield is one of the most multicultural LGA’s in Australia!

So….what about crime? The following is a comparison:

Wait…. Which is which? Well – purple is Wagga. Beating Ashfield in most things! Ashfield is a clear winner in Fraud offences though!

Is it really that bad? Let’s look at the most popular crimes:

Theft is a clear winner in both LGAs!

Wagga appears to have slightly higher instances of assault – although you may find this restricted to certain areas and or times of day

It is important to remember that although Wagga has a higher population and crime rate by the looks of things, it’s also covering a much larger land area. Your safety in this instance might not be that different in either area.

Ok, so when you put it that way, it’s really not that bad…

So, what about jobs? Can we get a job? Well we already saw that unemployment is 12% in Ashfield and 10% in Wagga, which is pretty similar.

So what kind of jobs are people doing?

Both LGAs have more Professionals than other workers.

The extra height in the Wagga table can probably be attributed to a higher population.

You don’t seem to be disadvantaged in any area…except for Machinery operators (blue) – it makes a lot of sense that it would be higher in Wagga where there is more industry.
