The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for

Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

We license and regulate marine activities in the seas around England and Wales so that they're carried out in a

sustainable way.

We’re responsible for:

• Managing and monitoring fishing fleet sizes and quotas for catches.

• Ensuring compliance with fisheries regulations, such as fishing vessel licences and quotas for fish and

seafood.

• Managing funding programmes for fisheries activities.

• Planning and licensing for marine construction, deposits and dredging that may have an environmental,

economic or social impact.

• Making marine nature conservation byelaws.

• Dealing with marine pollution emergencies, including oil spills.

• Helping to prevent illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing worldwide.

• Producing marine plans to include all marine activities, including those we don’t directly regulate.

Values

The role of a Data and GIS Officer is a varied and rewarding position, offering the opportunity to support and inform decision making across the organisation.

Daily tasks you may undertake include:

• Responding to a variety of data and GIS associated requests from both internal and external stakeholders. These include providing data expertise and access assistance as well as technical GIS skills to produce map outputs and spatial analysis for official publications.

• Maintaining the MMO’s internal datasets and

associated metadata catalogue containing over

550 records. Quality assurance checks are also

undertaken to ensure the MMO’s data

standards are met to drive informed decision

making.

• Demonstrating the capability of web based

and desktop GIS to other teams within the

MMO such as the Marine Planning or Marine

Conservation Teams through training courses

and workshops.

• Delivery of corporate datasets for example

Fisheries, vessel Automated Identification

System and Marine Licensing spatial data

through bespoke and automated GIS workflows.

About the Job

The Knowledge and Information Management (KIM) team provides effective data,

information and knowledge management services to support the Marine Management

Organisation (MMO) with its decision making.

This influential role offers the right candidate a technically diverse opportunity to help

shape the way MMO uses evidence to support operational delivery in areas such as

Marine Planning, Marine Licensing and Fisheries Management.

Working to deliver digital and analytical services, the role will support the GIS Services

Manager and Data Manager in the acquisition, analysis, management, distribution and

publication of both geospatial and non-geospatial information. This supports both

internal business and external engagement with stakeholders and the public.

The MMO’s has a diverse social, economic and environmental marine data and

evidence base. This is in part delivered through Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

and a master data register to manage metadata. The post holder will support the

implementation of these data flows and assist in the innovation of data delivery across

the organisation and Defra group through GIS services.

Engaging with all teams across the MMO, this role will have the opportunity to work

with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Through knowledge and experience

the successful candidate will manage, analyse, and advise on the MMO’s use of data

across a range of sources and industry sectors that operate throughout English waters.

Main Duties and AccountabilitiesEffective data management to support and enhance the MMO through the provision

of a broad, assured evidence base to support decision making:

• Work with all MMO functions and stakeholders to identify critical gaps and acquire data

to maintain the evidence base needed for MMO decision making.

• Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a science or engineering related subject or has equivalent industry experience.

Pre-employment checks will be undertaken in accordance with the HM

Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). The BPSS

comprises verification of four main elements:

• Identity

• employment history for the last three years

• nationality and immigration status, including the right to work
