Data Entry 2: The Use of Compute and Function Group (DR SEE KIN HAI)

1. From the Table, we have to add all the scores for the 14 items to gauge the students’ attitude

towards science. Remember S2, S7, S10 and S14 are negative items that you have recoded or

reverse their scores for this exercise in L6. Use the Data file saved for this coursework.2. To add all the 14 items for eg id = 10, ( 5+1+5+3+1+2+2+3+2+3+1+3+2+1+2+2+3 = 41). We

will use [Compute] command to add all the items instead. Note there are 4 missing values

(999) we may not be able get the total for all the 10 students here.

How to use the COMPUTE Command

1. Open your data file that you have saved from L6.2. Select [Transform] on the menu bar and click on [Compute Variable] to open the dialogue box.

3. Type [Jumlah/Total] in the [Target Variable] box to create a new variable for total score for

attitude scale for the 14 items. (Note the Malay version is for the convenient of Penyelidikan

 Kuantitatif dalam Pendidikan students).

4. Select item [S1] to bring into [Numeric Expression] then click [+] repeat for [S2] until [S14]

then click [OK]

5. Total for Student 1 and 9 are missing because of missing values for item S14. To overcome thisuse [Function Group] method below.

Using the Function Group

(SUM/TOTAL of all items for each student)

1. In the [Target Variable] type [Jumlah/Total] and from the [Function group] box select

[Statistical] then [Sum] and click on [↑ ] to bring to [Numeric Expression] box.

2. Select [S1] and click on [→

] to bring to [Numeric Expression] box. Repeat until [S14] andclick [OK].

Similarly, you can obtain Max, Min, Mean, SD, and Variance using the [Function Group]

To obtain mean of the items for each student

1. Open the file saved for this exercise.

2. Select [Transform] on the menu bar and click on [Compute Variable] to open the dialogue box.

3. Type [Mean/Min] in the [Target Variable] box.

4. From the [Function group] select [Statistics] then [Mean] then click on [↑ ].5. Select [S1] and click [→ ] to bring to [Numeric Expression] box. Repeat for [S2] to [S14] then

click [OK]

To obtain the frequency COUNT for response code for 1,2,3 or 4 for each student from the 14

items. Use the COUNT command

1. Open the data file that you have saved from L6 coursework.

2. Select [Transform] from the menu bar and click on [Count Values within cases] to open the

dialogue box [Count Occurrences of Values within Cases].

3. Type [Bil 1] in the [Target Variable] box and [Frequency of scoring 1/  Kekerapan skor 1] inthe [Target Label] box

4. Select [S1] then [→ ] to bring to [Numeric Variables] box. Repeat for [S2] until [S14].

5. Click on [Define Values] to open the [Count Values within Cases: Values to Count] sub-dialogue box

6. Type [1] in the [Value] box and click [Add] to bring to [Value to Count] box then [Continue].

7. Repeat from Step 3 until Step 6, type [Bil 2], [Bil 3], and [Bil 4] for [Frequency of scoring 2/ Kekerapan skor 2], [Frequency of scoring 3/  Kekerapan skor 3] and [Frequency of scoring 4/

Kekerapan skor 4] respectively. Then [OK].
