The following datasets are available for download: Fishing effort: Daily CSV files of fishing effort data (2012-2016) are available in two formats, including 1) gridded at 0.01 degrees by gear type and flag state; and 2) gridded at 0.1 degrees by MMSI. Vessel identity: Vessel identity information as determined by our neural net classifier. Transshipment: Information on vessels capable of transshipping fish at sea, loitering events (transshipment-capable vessels going slow enough and long enough to transship), and potential transshipments (potential encounters in which a fishing vessel was also recorded traveling slow enough, close enough, and long enough to transship with). Anchorages: Dataset of locations where vessels congregate and remain stationary. Anonymized AIS data: Sample dataset of labeled AIS data that can be used to train fishing prediction models. How do I download data?

What data can I download from Global Fishing Watch?

The following datasets are available for download:• Fishing effort: Daily CSV files of fishing effort

data (2012-2016) are available in two formats, including 1) gridded at 0.01 degrees by gear type and flag state; and 2) gridded at 0.1 degrees by MMSI.

• Vessel identity: Vessel identity information as determined by our neural net classifier.

• Transshipment: Information on vessels capable of transshipping fish at sea, loitering events (transshipment-capable vessels going slow enough and long enough to transship), and potential transshipments (potential

encounters in which a fishing vessel was also recorded traveling slow enough, close enough, and long enough to transship with).

• Anchorages: Dataset of locations where vessels congregate and remain stationary.

• Anonymized AIS data: Sample dataset of labeled AIS data that can be used to train fishing prediction models.

• Other data: Assorted GIS datasets developed by Global Fishing Watch, including distance to shore and distance to port, that are not directly related to fishing but are necessary to properly identify fishing.

How can I access Global Fishing Watch data on Google BigQuery?

How can I access Global Fishing Watch data on Google Earth Engine?

Several of our datasets (fishing effort and vessel identity) can be accessed via Google’s BigQuery platform. If you have not used BigQuery, visit here and click on “try it free” to get started. You can query up to one terabyte per month for no charge, which is far more than you will need to analyze our fishing effort data.

The data can be queried using the following BigQuery Public Table IDs:• Fishing effort by flag state and gear type:■ ID: global-fishing-watch.global_footprint_of_

fisheries.fishing_effort• Fishing effort by MMSI:■ ID: global-fishing-watch.global_footprint_of_

fisheries.fishing_effort_byvessel• Fishing vessels included in fishing effort data:■ ID: global-fishing-watch.global_footprint_of_

fisheries.fishing_vessels• Vessels classified by the neural net, identified

through manual review, or matched to registries:■ ID: global-fishing-watch.global_footprint_of_

fisheries.vessels

For more information on accessing our data in BigQuery, see this post on our data blog.

Our fishing effort data (by flag state and gear type) is publicly accessible via Google Earth Engine, a free and incredibly powerful platform for geospatial analysis (read more and sign up here).

Data are available as two “Image Collections” of daily rasters - one for vessel hours and one for fishing hours - and can be imported into Earth Engine scripts using the following asset IDs:• Fishing hours: GFW/GFF/V1/fishing_hours• Vessel hours: GFW/GFF/V1/vessel_hours

For more information and a tutorial on working with our data in Google Earth Engine, see this post on our data blog.
