Notes on Baronies of Ireland 1821-1891 Baronies are sub-division of counties their administrative boundaries being fixed by the Act 6 Geo. IV., c 99. Their origins pre-date this act, they were used in the assessments of local taxation under the Grand Juries. Over time many were split into smaller units and a few were amalgamated. Townlands and parishes - smaller units - were detached from one barony and allocated to an adjoining one at vaious intervals. This the size of many baronines changed, albiet not substantially. Furthermore, reclamation of sea and loughs expanded the land mass of Ireland, consequently between 1851 and 1861 Ireland increased its size by 9,433 acres. The census Commissioners used Barony units for organising the census data from 1821 to 1891. These notes are to guide the user through these changes. From the census of 1871 to 1891 the number of subjects enumerated at this level decreased In addition, city and large town data are also included in many of the barony tables. These are : The list of cities and towns is a follows: Dublin City Kilkenny City Drogheda Town* Cork City Limerick City Waterford City Belfast Town/City (Co. Antrim part)** Belfast Town/City (Co. Down part) Carrickfergus Galway Town

There are particular problems with two towns, Belfast and Drogheda. Both span county boundaries For some variables values for the whole town have been used and for other variables the values have been presented according to the county in which part of the town is located. To explain in more detail the notes below should be of help. Town/city of Belfast Town of Belfast spans counties Antrim and Down 1821 Population figures for the town of Belfast are available but they are included in

the total barony figures in which it is located and therefore are not included in order to prevent double counting when aggregated. For users interested Belfast population statistics for 1821 and 1831 see notes on population.

1831 Only data for occupations at county level. 1841 The Belfast town data are presented in two ways: A (i) Belfast town (part of): (a) Knockbreda parish, (part of) }within the municipal boundary. (b) Shankill parish, (part of) } (ii) Belfast town (part of): (b) Shankill parish, (part of) } without the municipal boundary. B (i) Belfast town (part of, 1296 acres) in county Antrim. (ii) Belfast town (part of, 576 acres) in county Down. C Belfast town, whole (aggregating the statistics of counties Antrim and Down,

area of 1872 acres). We have used either B or C in the database as appropriate. 1851 Same as 1841 1861 Area of the town expanded to 5637 acres. Figures exclude Merchant and Royal

Navy seamen. 1871 Belfast Municipal Borough, area expanded to 5991 acres. 1881 Same as 1871 1891 Same as 1871 City of Dublin/Suburbs of Dublin. The census year of 1861 presents for the first time statistics for the surburbs of Dublin. They are : Castleknock suburb Coolock suburb Dublin suburb Rathdown suburb Uppercross suburb

These areas were formerly part of the Baronies in County Dublin of the same name, which by 1861 were reduced in size as a consequence of a portion on the periphery of Dublin being designated Dublin surburbs. Statistics at this level occurs for a limited number of variables, and so it is important to check. By 1871 a new survey of county Dublin had taken place. The Baronies area units were changed and Dublin suburbs had vanished being subsummed in the City of Dublin County of the Town/Town of Drogheda County of the Town of Drogheda has boundaries adjacent to counties Louth and Meath 1821 composed of (a) St Mary parish (b) St Peter parish (c) Ballymakenny parish (part of) remainder in the barony of Ferrard, Louth county 1831 As 1821 Town of Drogheda 1841 composed of (a) St Mary parish (part of, area - 184 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Meath (b) St Peter parish (part of, area - 288 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Louth The part of the parish of Ballymakenny and the rural portions of the parishes of St Mary and St Peter, which hitherto formed part of the county of the town of Drogheda are now included in the retirns of the adjoining counties. A footnote indicates that the remainder of the municipal town of Drogheda is in the partish of Tullyallen, barrony of Ferrard, county of Louth, though no statistical data is included for this part of the town with the rest of Drogheda Town figures. 1851 composed of (a) St Mary parish (part of, area - 184 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Meath (b) St Peter parish (part of, area - 288 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Louth (c) Tullyallen parish(part of, area - 25 acres) remainder in the barony of Ferrard, County Louth 1861 composed of (a) St Mary parish (part of, area - 145 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Meath (b) St Peter parish (part of, area - 270 acres) remainder in the barony of Drogheda, County Louth (c) Tullyallen parish(part of, area - 26 acres) remainder in the barony of Ferrard, County Louth, and in the Barfony of Slane Upper, County Meath. 1871 Called County of the Town of Drogheda A new survey of County Louth and

the County of the Town of Drogheda was done since the previous census, hence modification in the size of the town. Now measures 453 acres
