Shift from PC to Mobile Computing Era

• 2 billion PC-based internet subscribers

• 5.3 billion mobile internet subscribers; 940 million 3G subscribers

• Apple – 300,000+ applications

• Android – 100,000+• Total about 400,000,

which includes ones for BlackBerry, Windows and Nokia.

• Applications and Services delivered through the cloud can be accessed through mobile computing devices with web access

• Desktop virtualization leverages the Client-Server architecture

• Given their increasing computing power, mobile devices are capable of replacing PCs

Factors driving investments in the Asia Pacific Datacenter Industry

Increasing Business Requirements driving the Asia Pacific Datacenter Industry

Increasing traction to support business growth in a more efficient and lean manner.

Given increasing demand, SPs have responded quickly and expanded raised floor space; and adopted virtualization and consolidation.

However, rising operational costs and shortage of suitable space is hampering growth.

Increasing adoption of high-density blade servers leading to rise in power and cooling requirements.

SPs are increasingly focusing on green IT to lower the power requirements at their facilities.

Virtualization Sprawl will Force Enterprises to Re-architect Datacenters

Architecture Redesign

Adoption of Open Frameworks

The 3-tier architecture proves inefficient in the virtualized environment as it is not optimized for server to server traffic and adds to Latency.

Significant improvements switch performance enables a shift to a 2-tier architecture by eliminating the Aggregation layer. Reduction in switches increases efficiency and reduces costs.

The current management tools are not sufficient to manage the increasingly virtualized environment of today.

This is where Open Frameworks come into the fray. These are the tools that manage network data center infrastructure, suited for the virtualized data centers. They ensure high availability and flexibility, and help manage costs.

Solution

VM Sprawl

With increasing adoption of virtualization, enterprises risk creating more VMs then required. This leads to overutilization of resources and additional costs for licenses.

In order to prevent this, it is essential to carry out a careful analysis of the needs of the enterprise. The creation of new VMs should be based on this analysis. This will help justify the infrastructure and costs for all VMs.

Challenge

Solution

Security

Two key security issues remain with virtualization: • Inability of dormant

machines to stay up-to-date with latest patches

• Lack of a secure layer between VMs to ensure clean communication

A solution for this is not currently available. However, enterprises and technology vendors are closely working on eliminating these issues to drive further adoption of virtualization.
