Spectroscopy is a general term referring to the interactions of various types of electromagnetic radiation with matter. Exactly how the radiation interacts with matter is directly dependent on the energy of the radiation. Spectroscopy: Is an analytical method technique wherein the absorbance of specific wavelength of light by the molecules of sample under test is determined. The more the number of molecules in sample, the greater is the absorbance and vice-verse.

Spectroscopy The higher energy ultraviolet and visible wavelengths affect the energy levels of the outer electrons. Radio waves are used in nuclear magnetic Resonance and affect the spin of nuclei in a magnetic field. Infrared radiation is absorbed by matter resulting in rotation and/or vibration of molecules.

Day 4 : 9th June 2016

Lecture 7 Module: Prof. Rahul Purwar(9:30am-11am) Topic: Stem cells: Basics Science to Medicine

Antibody “Her2” is used to treat cancer

Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells that can differentiate into specialized cells and

can divide (through mitosis) to produce more stem cells. They are found in

multicellular organisms. In mammals, there are two broad types of stem cells: embryonic stem

cells, which are isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, and adult stem cells, which are

found in various tissues. In adultorganisms, stem cells and progenitor cells act as a repair system

for the body, replenishing adult tissues. In a developing embryo, stem cells can differentiate into

all the specialized cells—ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm (see induced pluripotent stem

cells)—but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin, or

intestinal tissues.

There are three known accessible sources of autologous adult stem cells in humans:

1. Bone marrow, which requires extraction by harvesting, that is, drilling into bone (typically

the femur or iliac crest).

2. Adipose tissue (lipid cells), which requires extraction by liposuction.

3. Blood, which requires extraction through apheresis, wherein blood is drawn from the

donor (similar to a blood donation), and passed through a machine that extracts the stem

cells and returns other portions of the blood to the donor.

Lecture 8 Module: Prof. Rahul Purwar (11:30am-1pm) Topic: Stem cells: Cell signaling how do cell communicate

Cell use chemical signals for communication Local signaling : the signal acts on nearby cells In a multi cellular organisms : two types of signaling pathways In single cells: three stages of cell signaling Two types of signaling pathways in multicellular organism Signal –receiver (Receptor)

Most of the receptor is plasma membrane proteins for the recognition of ligands: 1. G- protein coupled receptor 2. Receptor tyrosine kinases 3. Ion-channel receptor
