Dr. M R Bhat Department of Aerospace Engineering Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru – INDIA INDIAN SOCIETY FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (BENGALURU CHAPTER) INDIAN SOCIETY FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (BENGALURU CHAPTER) Date & Time : Saturday, May 29th 2021 @ 4.00pm to 5.00 pm ABSTRACT Advanced polymer composite materials are being increasingly used for high performance structural applications in aerospace, automotive and other industries owing to their specific performance characteristics such as higher specific strength and specific modulus. Further, excellent fatigue properties, corrosion resistance, tailorability for specific applications are other attractive advantages of this category of materials when used in structural components. However, these polymer composites have also brought along newer challenges specifically associated with them which need to be addressed for their optimum utilization in high performance applications. Effect of porosity, moisture absorption and hygrothermal ageing are some of these challenges. Evaluation of bonded joints in composite structures and in metal fiber composites is another critical problem being faced by industries using polymer composites. At the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, some of these problems are being addressed through a set of experimental investigations using non-destructive evaluation(NDE) approach. In addition to conventional NDE tools such as Ultrasonics, Digital Radiography, Infra- red Thermography etc., advanced NDE techniques such as guided wave propagation, acoustic emission and thermo-elastic emission are being tried to establish NDE parameters that can indirectly represent the degradation in properties of the polymer composite materials caused by the above mentioned problems. This talk presents a quick glance of the experimental investigations being carried out and the outcome there of. About the Speaker Dr. M R Bhat as an academician has been into teaching by offering graduate level courses on Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation, Smart Materials & Structures and Experimental Techniques at the department of Aerospace Engineering, IISc., Bengaluru. He has guided more than 100 students for Ph.D., M.S., ME & MTech. Dr. Bhat's expertise in the field of Structural Testing and NDE has been rigorously and extensively sought by other R & D organizations and Industries to solve their problems in the field. He has been invited as a faculty in several workshops and short term courses organized by various R & D organizations, academic institutions and industries to share his expertise and knowledge as also to train their engineers in the field. He has also been invited to be on several Technical / Evaluation committees by other R & D organizations and Academic Institutions as an expert member in the field. AWARDS / RECOGNITIONS : i) National Award for Outstanding Contribution to R & D in NDT –by Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing – ISNT, 2006 ii) ASNT - Level - III certification in Acoustic Emission Testing by The American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) - 1998. First of few in India to have obtained this certification. iii) Fellow of Indian Society for NDT ( ISNT ) - 2000 iv) Best Research Project award for ' In-flight monitoring using AET ' by Aeronautics Research & Development Board (AR &DB) India, Silver Jubilee committee, 1996. v) Outstanding Paper Award for paper published in International Journal "Materials Evaluation" by American Society for NDT (ASNT) - 2014 vi) Awards for best research papers at international & national conferences .
