Class representatives will place wreaths and members of the school community are also welcome to place a flower if they would like to. We look forward to seeing you at our Remembrance Day parade on Friday morning. Disco Our Student Council will be holding a disco on Thursday 24 November, we hope to see as many students come as possible. The last couple have been fantastic thanks to parent helpers in the tuckshop and staff that have made themselves available to assist with supervision. Prep Transition Last Wednesday we hosted our first of three Prep transitions days. A big thank you to so many parents for attending with their children. Our wonderful teachers organised a bag of goodies for students including their first free school hat. You will know our preppies by their maroon coloured hat this is quite deliberately different to Yr 1 to Yr 6 students who will wear the navy school hat. This way our whole school community can recognise our preps and give then the additional care and support that they may require. We look forward to seeing all of our 2017 prep students again on the next two transition days - Wednesday 9 & 16. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with GoodStart Centre staff. Maleny High School Transition Yr 6 students will transition to the Maleny High School on the following dates. Wed 16 & Thur 17 Nov. Parents will need to make arrangements for students to get to and from the Maleny State High School on these days. P&C Final Meeting Our final P&C meeting for 2016 will be held on Wednesday 9 November. Please mark this on your calendar as we are always looking for more volunteers to assist make our school great. Music Fest at Iona Congratulations to all the members in our Combined Schools Concert Band that played at Iona College in Brisbane recently and their Instrumental Music Teacher Mr Meenely. Students made an excited late assembly entrance on their return proudly in procession of a platinum trophy (the highest honour) that they were awarded for their efforts. Parent Information Session Instrumental Music On Tuesday 15 November both the Senior and Junior Concert bands will combine for a performance at our Maleny State School Assembly. After the Concert Band Performance, Parents /Guardians of all students participating in the 2017 Concert Band Program, both beginners and continuing students are invited to attend the Parent Information Afternoon. The presentation will follow the Combined Band performance at Assembly. Mr. Meneely will be available to answer any questions after the presentation. Hinterland Combined Schools Concert Band 2016 Music Awards The Hinterland Combined Schools Concert Band 2016 Music Awards will be held at Montville State School on Thursday 17 November. Parents, carers and friends are invited to join us for afternoon tea from 4:15pm, followed by the Concert and Awards Ceremony. Afternoon tea will be served from the Undercover Area Kitchen. Please note that students are required to attend rehearsal from 3:15pm. We ask that students bring a small plate of food to share for afternoon tea. Tea and coffee will be provided. Students should arrive at Montville State School dressed in their Concert Band Uniform. We request all Band shirts and ties be returned at the end of this event. Please bring a shirt or top to change into after the concert. Register for Prep now! Don’t wait. Classes are now being put together for Prep 2017. It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2017 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to [email protected]. Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2017. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2017 please encourage them to contact us immediately. Leaving Maleny It is important to us if you are leaving our school to inform us immediately. This will assist us in forming our class structure and staffing mix for next year.

SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour Support) This week’s Rule: Be Respectful Fortnightly Focus: I’m Great, I Wait Our Expectations

If adults are talking wait 2m back, until they are finished, they will generally acknowledge you are there and

thank you for waiting.

Stop for adults or younger children when walking – assembly, pathways, under buildings, footpaths.

Wait quietly – bus lines, at crossing, lining up for class, assembly.

Wait silently when your teacher is on the phone or talking to an adult.

Be aware of visitors in our school and act appropriately, quiet and calm.

When waiting in line keep your hands and feet to yourself.

The Office

Only go through the office if you need to.

Use a quiet voice.

Wait silently for office staff.

Sit quietly and wait on chairs in a respectful way.

Always report to office staff before heading to DP, Principal’s office or sick room.

Have a Great Week! John

From the Deputy Principal Congratulations to Matilda in Yr 6 – Telling Stories Competition Matilda entered the Children’s Writing Competition, which was organised by Mooloolaba Rotary in partnership with the Department of Creative Writing, University of the Sunshine Coast and Voices on the Coast. Matilda was awarded 5th place in this competition. The title of Matilda’s story was ‘I Should Have Told the Truth’. Matilda’s story will be read out on Assembly this week, the following exerts are of her ‘Sizzling Start and Exciting Ending.’ I Should Have Told The Truth SIZZLING START Ouch. My lying is terrible. So bad, it almost hurts. And that is not an exaggeration. But it seems to fool Queenie, and really, that’s all that matters. Ok, let me explain. Queenie is the most idiotic stupid lump of human cells you will ever meet. She is spoilt, she is pretty, she is popular and she gets everything with a click of the fingers and a bat of the eyelids. The complete opposite of me. I was jealous. EXCITING ENDING The next morning I pack my bag. My pencil case, my lunch box, my water bottle and Queenie’s stupid pencil case. Although the extra pencil case isn’t heavy, it weighs a ton to me. It is heavy with my fears, my sins and my sorrows. When I arrive at school, I wait until Queenie is messing about with her idiot friends, and then I zip open her bag. So far, so good. I slip the pencil case inside, happy to get rid of it. No one sees me. Phew. For the rest of the day, I am unnaturally happy. Everything goes perfectly. I skip all the way home. And of course, I could have avoided all this trouble by not taking the pencil-case in the first place. I knew I should have told the truth. (Actually, I didn’t, but that is meant to be the moral of this story, so I hope I can get away with saying that I did. Lying again! ) 2017 School Captain Process Students who reached the Interview stage of the leadership process have now been shortlisted. These students will now prepare a 5 minute speech outlining their reasons why they would make a good school captain. These speeches will be presented in front of the Yr 4 & Yr 5 cohorts on Thursday 10 November at 11:40 in the Hall. Remembrance Day Ceremony: Friday 11 November is Remembrance Day. The Maleny State School’s Remembrance Day ceremony will be held in the hall from 9:00am-9:30am. Parents and carers are welcome to attend.

Classroom News 4A / 4B News Our school camp to Currimundi Recreational Centre was a great success. The focus was on team building with activities that included creating catapults, body boarding, archery, caving and an alpine team challenge. The students were required to solve problems and compromise their ideas. Everyone was excited about sleeping in cabins and eating together in the dining hall. The chocolate nachos was enjoyed by all.

Year 4 Archery Recount using the Seven Steps. I clumsily loaded my arrow, sweating with nerves. The strength involved in pulling back the thin, black and seemingly menacing cord was unbearable. I have never been good at archery. I did not realise that my eyebrows had creased considerably and my eyelids half closed with worry. I tried desperately to reassure myself. It didn’t work. My short, raspy breaths were fogging up my glasses. If I got a perfect shot I’d win this round for our team. I struggled hard, and eventually got the ball in my range of sight. Oh no. someone shot a perfect arrow heading straight for our ball. I started to panic. I instinctively let go of the string, my heart throbbing in my head. I couldn’t look. Suddenly a loud cheer echoed out from my team behind me. My concentrated eyes began to focus. I had knocked the opposing person’s arrow from the air, and, and made contact with the last ball except for ours, sending it flying from its place. I was almost happy, more relieved. I grinned as everyone shouted happy comments at me. I actually think I like archery now. By Cora THE END

Last Friday morning we held our Cultural Expo which was absolutely amazing as we had such a great turn out of family members and friends. Each student dressed up and created an informative PowerPoint on their chosen culture and decorated their tables. The visitors enjoyed the smorgasbord of food that came from each country that the children prepared for their table. Thank you to all the parents, friends, grandparents and staff who attended the morning, your support was very much appreciated.

Music Iliana

Musical Notes Music count Us In This week nearly half a million students throughout Australia in over 2100 schools will be participating in the ‘Music Count Us In’ Program singing the song ‘Let it Play’, raising their voices to celebrate the importance of music education in schools. This year’s ‘song that stops the nation’, ‘Let it play’, was composed by five talented high school students from across Australia, and mentored by musician John Foreman. Why Music Education? Decades of research shows that learning music can help students’ self-confidence, self-discipline and team work. It can help students engage in school, can improve school attendance and can even help student’s make healthy life choices. There are also strong links between music learning and academic skills in literacy and numeracy. Research shows that music is unique in its flow-on benefits to students who learn it. Our students added their voices to the 2016 ‘Music Count Us In’ celebration by all singing ‘Let it Play’ on Parade. Thank you to 2A for leading this year’s song. If your child has enjoyed singing ‘Let it Play’ you can find out more information and videos of this and other ‘Music Count Us In’ songs on the Music Australia website at: https://musicaustralia.org.au/program/countusin/ Liz Shortland

Chappy News Showing Appreciation So often we think nice things but don’t verbalise them. I have recently been prompted to speak more words of encouragement. I know personally that one of my love languages is ‘words of affirmation’. I see most powerfully in my own children, the difference my words make to their attitudes and behaviour. Whenever I find my children doing a chore without complaining (because they know if they do they will get another ), I immediately applaud them for their help and effort, and I see something lovely change in them. Often, I will be asked the question, “mum, is there anything else I can do?” Everyone thrives when they know they are valued and appreciated, so my challenge to myself and you, is to speak those words to people. When you see something lovely in a person, tell them! If you value a quality about a friend, tell them! Don’t be silent. No one is a mind reader, and you have an opportunity to make someone’s day. Have a great week everyone. Breakfast Club is on this Wednesday 9 November at the Tuckshop from 8:00am to 8:40am.

Engagement and Well-being Teacher News Anxiety in Children In current studies it has been recognised that more and more children, at younger ages, even at the age of 6 are being diagnosed with Anxiety disorders. Even though there has been no conclusive evidence into why this is occurring, anxiety is often heightened when our thoughts and/or environment become too overwhelming, too disorganised, confusing and not easy to understand or work out. There are different types and levels of anxiety that children and adults may possess. These anxieties fall into the following categories: Social phobia – extreme levels of shyness and fears of being seen in a negative light. Avoid a range of social interactions such as talking to new people, speaking up in class or performing in public. Separation anxiety – fear and distress at being away from the family. Commonly a fear that something bad will happen to a loved one when they are separated. School camps can be problematic. Generalised anxiety disorder – when children have excessive and unrealistic worries about a broad range of possibilities, such as things that might happen, past behaviours, schoolwork or how popular they are. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Child is affected by persistent unwanted thoughts, often about dirt or germs, or sometimes a need for symmetry. To try to stop the thoughts the child feels compelled to repeat a particular action, such as washing his or her hands or repeated counting. As parents and teachers, we can support those who experience anxiety by considering the following points: Teach coping skills Learning about feelings and how they can be managed can really help. Regular social and emotional learning that emphasises coping skills will be helpful in addition to regular, universal social and emotional learning instruction. Children with severe anxiety will benefit most from a social and emotional skills program targeted for children with internalising difficulties. Discourage avoidance The tendency to avoid difficult situations or tasks stops the student learning how to manage in spite of feeling anxious. Where necessary, the task or situation can be modified to provide more manageable steps. However, do not force a child to take on something that is too overwhelming. Encourage ‘having a go’ Encouraging students to participate and ‘have a go’ helps them get over doubts about their ability to manage. Giving positive feedback for trying can make a big difference. Set realistic expectations Feeling pressure to be perfect is common for children with anxiety disorders. Setting realistic expectations for academic work is important to help them learn to manage their anxiety and stress less. Modify and monitor stressful activities Test situations or class presentations may be particularly stressful for children with anxiety difficulties. Teachers may be able to modify assessment tasks to relieve some of the pressure, for example, by providing breaks during or extra time for tests, or having children present to small groups rather than the whole class. Monitor the child’s progress and gradually provide more challenging requirements as confidence increases. Develop independence Provide opportunities for children with anxiety to take on special responsibilities that help them support their view of themselves as capable. Developing a sense of independence reduces their need for reassurance and builds confidence. Access help when needed Anxiety can be caused by a range of factors. When children’s anxiety symptoms are severe or persistent it is important to consult with your school’s student wellbeing staff member or guidance officer for further advice and support. We all experience anxiety and it is healthy to do so as it allows us to take on situations outside our comfort zone that challenges us, therefore developing further confidence in self. It’s when the anxiety begins to affect our ability to relate to others or our environment, or we begin to freeze and not cope with our everyday lives that we need to seek further support. Deb Price. Engagement and Well-being Teacher for the Hinterland Schools.
