Giigoonh dodem Fish Clans - Intellectuals
Norval Morrisseau blog
"Title not known" [Sacred Fish], © 1990's Norval Morrisseau
The Fish Clans claim their ancestor was the first to emerge from the sea. Today the fish clans are the Bullhead (Wawaazisiig), Sturgeon (Namewag), Catfish (Maanamegwag), Northern Pike (Ginoozheg), Whitefish (Adikmegwag), Merman/Mermaid (Nibiinaabewag), and Sucker (Namebinag). The people of the Fish Clan were the teachers and scholars. The fish clan repre-sented wisdom. They helped children develop skills and healthy spirits. They also drew on their knowledge to solve disputes between the leaders of the Crane (Shagi) and Loon (Maang) Clans. The Fish people were given the power to be "star gazers." They were known for their constant pursuit of meditation and philosophy. Fish Clan people are known for a long life and baldness in old age.
The fish clan settles arguments between the crane and loon clans. They are the wise people. They solve the problems within the nation. The turtle (Mishiikenh) is the leader of the fish clan. In this clan we have different types of fish such as migrating, territorial, bottom feeders, top eaters, late spanners, early spanners.

Smoked suckers
Pocket Ojibwe-A phrasebook for nearly all occasions
— Patricia M. Ningewance
Remove the scales from the sucker.
Cut the head and 5 inches of the tail off.
Cut along the caudal (top) fin and down along the rib cage.
Cut off the rib cage until you have a square flat piece of fish flesh.
Wash it and score (slice it until you almost cut right through) on the inner side.
Cutting it like that will make it dry quicker.
Place your pieces of fish, skin side down on the racks over a smoking fire, never on open flame. You can spread them out on the racks later to completely dry them.
To eat, you can put them in the oven for ¾ hr (45min) at 350˚F.
They are very tasty and worth the time.
