FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear St Martin’s Families
This coming week-end we will celebrate the Feast of St Patrick. The
pride, the passion and the "down-to earth" humanity of the Irish have
had a marked influence on the history and culture of our nation. So
too has the feast day of Ireland's favourite son, St Patrick, been such a
cause of celebration nation-wide for many years that the tradition
continues to grow. In the past the "wearing of the green" may have
been a mark of sectarian pride but in this new enlightened era it
serves to unite people of all backgrounds in its once a year
celebration.
National Day Against Bullying
This Friday the 16th is the day that
Australia, brings into focus, the topic of
bullying. At St Martin’s we have two main
foci for the week.
1) Educating the children with what to
do if they are being bullied
2) Choose kind
The children will learn the ‘High 5’
strategies.

The Choose Kind movement, came from the movie ‘Wonder’. St Martin’s has signed up to be a school that
promotes choosing kind behaviours. This week the staff will be looking for children who are exhibiting kind
behaviours and they will be acknowledged for this. We feel that bullying would not occur, if only people
chose to be kind.
Travel to the Holy Land
Each day, Geoff has been sending the staff updates as to what he is experiencing on his pilgrimage. The
trip looks amazing and quite life changing. One principal described it as, ‘being able to live everything we
ever learnt growing up in a Catholic school’.
“Mass in the middle of the Sea of Galilee was one of the most memorable of many during my time here in
the Holy Land”. Geoff
Parent Teacher Interviews
Over the next couple of weeks, parents/carers will all have the opportunity to meet with their child’s class
teacher. These meetings are a great way for teachers to communicate to parents/carers how children are
settling into the 2018 school year, and to discuss their academic progress so far. Likewise, these meetings
also give you, as parents/carers, the chance to share any information about your children with their class
teacher.
Meeting times can be booked via the website – www.schoolinterviews.com.au and information about this
process was emailed to families on Monday and there are also instructions attached to this Newsletter.
Please contact the office if you are experiencing any difficulties with this. Bookings for interviews close
this Friday at 3pm.

Year 5 Camp
Next week our Year 5 students are off to Tallebudgera for a 2-night, 3 day camp. They will have many
opportunities to grow as an individual and as part of a team. They will test their confidence and resilience
in activities such as high ropes, surfing and giant swing. We wish the teachers and students an enjoyable 3
days. Mrs Cran will accompany the students on Monday night and Mr Sullivan will join them on Tuesday
and Tuesday night, returning to school Wednesday morning.
Kylie Anderson (Acting Principal)
FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Dear Parents
With only a couple of weeks left in the term, there are still many important events and celebrations to be
held at St Martin’s. The first of these is the family mass this weekend at Our Lady Of Graces Church. We
extend an invitation to all our families to attend the 5:30pm mass this Sunday. I thank Mrs Power, and
members of our school choir, who will lead the singing at mass. There will also be an afternoon tea,
beginning at 4:30pm, in the hospitality room in the Parish Centre. This is a great opportunity to come along
and meet new families in the parish. We hope to see many of you there.
St Patrick’s Day This Saturday, March 17, is the feast day of St Patrick. St Patrick was a man who listened to and said ‘Yes’ to God’s call. God asked St Patrick to spread the message of Jesus to the people of Ireland. You and I are asked to work for Jesus in different ways in our world today. We pray, that
like St Patrick, we will do this work willingly and enthusiastically.
Project Compassion Our fundraising for Caritas is coming along nicely. Last week we raised a total of $1000, bringing our total so far to $2150. This week the money raised will go toward providing resource packs and books for our 20 students. We will soon be ready to start our second classroom. Well done everyone. Let’s see if we can make a big effort in the remaining weeks of term to raise money so that everyone can have a just future. Holy Week Celebrations
This year we are celebrating Holy Week with an Easter Prayer Walk. There will be displays representing each of the main events in Holy week set up in different locations around the school and all classes will participate in the prayer walk on either Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. You might like to discuss the story of Easter with your child/ren after they have experienced the walk. The prayer walk will commemorate this remarkable story, telling the story of the events from Palm Sunday through to Good Friday. We will celebrate the Resurrection when we return next term on Wednesday April 18 at 11am.
Have a great week.
Jen Cran (Assistant Principal Religious Education)

CURRICULUM NEWS Feedback
Over the last few years, teachers have been using Learning Intentions and Success Criteria to clearly
communicate to students what they are learning and how they can be successful. This year our teaching
staff are focusing on giving students feedback. Feedback is information for the student about his or her
performance. It is directly related to the student’s individual learning goals or the specific success criteria
for the learning or task. Teachers are trialling the use of various tools and techniques for providing
feedback to the students so that students know how they are going and the next steps in their learning.
Look out for how Learning Intentions and Success Criteria are being used in your child’s classroom and the
ways your teacher is providing feedback.
Literacy Solutions
On Tuesday March 27th at 6.30pm Angela Ehlmer from Literacy Solutions is conducting a Parent
Information Session. During our Professional Learning days in January, Angela presented to our teachers
about how to implement a balanced literacy program which teaches students the strategies, skills and
knowledge they need to read and write.
Angela is a dynamic presenter who is very passionate about children experiencing literacy success. She will
discuss activities at home that you can do which will impact your child’s achievement in reading and
writing. This should be a very informative evening.

SPORTS NEWS
Yesterday St Martin’s were lucky enough to compete in the Futsal competition at Oxley. The competition
was challenging and we were very proud of the way the St Martin’s children persisted with a positive and
respectful attitude. The two St Martin’s teams both competed against three schools each and we were very
happy with their efforts.
The Girls Futsal team were selected to compete in the Regional Futsal Titles in April.
We congratulate both teams on a great effort at Futsal.

St Martin’s Cross-Country Carnival 2018
The St Martin’s Cross-Country Carnival will be held Week 10, Wednesday, 29th March. Students are
encouraged to wear a shirt with their house colour. Please read the schedule below outlining the time of
each year level’s race.
Championship Race
The championship race is 3km and is ONLY open to those children wishing to trial for the District Cross
Country Team. Children must be turning 10 this year or older (11 and 12 years) to compete in this race. To
compete at Districts, children will need to be able to run the whole distance without walking. It is
recommended that children who wish to compete in this race come to at least one cross country training
session before the carnival (Wednesday and Friday mornings 7:45-8:15am) so they can learn the course,
though this is NOT compulsory. In PE classes, I will be practising with the children ONLY the course for their
year group and NOT the championship course.
What to wear on the day
On the day children are to wear their full sports uniform and may bring house colour shirt/ribbons etc. to
wear when they are running. Children will need to bring hats and water bottles to the Valley when it is time
for their race. Please ensure your child applies sunscreen before coming to school.
Coffee van
There will be a coffee van onsite from 8am until 10am for those of you who wish to purchase a hot
beverage. It will be located near the Dominic Centre.

ITALIANO @ ST MARTIN’S
Buongiorno a tutti,
It is difficult to believe that we are already in Week 8. This term has been extremely busy with our Year 4
and 5 students getting a taste for the lingua e cultura Italiana- Italian language and culture. They have
been busy learning all about colours, greetings, and numbers and finally this week they will be
collaborating with one another to create and perform a short conversation. I look forward to listening to all
of the students’ wonderful language learning.
The Year 6 students have been busy with their first assignment task, which is all about Italian fashion
designers. I also look forward to reading about their models and seeing the amazing Italian fashion inspired
creations they have designed in week 9.
Did you know that Italian is accessible to all students here at St Martin’s? Not just the Year 4, 5 and 6
students. Here at St Martin’s we are extremely fortunate to have an annual subscription to the fabulous
Linguascope website. Simply go to the website https://www.linguascope.com/default.htm and students
Page 11 of 16
can work their way through the language learning games; Please email me for the login details. Year 4, 5
& 6 students have the logins in their classrooms.
There are also a couple of other websites that I suggest for Italian language learning and best of all they are
free (no username or passwords are required)
