A Note from Mr. Marchand...

Dear Families,

As we approach the end of another school year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect back and thank the individuals who make our school a success.

Our teachers have worked tremendously hard this school year to ensure that every student is learning at the highest levels that they ever have. Data and curriculum meetings have been established and teachers meet twice each week in grade level teams to discuss instruction, assessment, and how best to “grow” our children academically through either extension or intervention activities each day.

If you haven’t joined our PTO, please consider doing this for next year. Without their support, many of the wonderful things we do for our students would not be possible. Thank you to all of our members for their time and energy with regards to field trips, classroom events and parties, and a host of other items.

Thank you to our families for the countless hours helping with homework, signing permission slips, and bringing in the pair of glasses that was forgotten at the breakfast table. The partnership that exists between families and a school is one of the most important aspects in making any school a success.

Finally, thank you to our students for what they have accomplished through their hard work each day. I continue to be impressed each year by all that they achieve. I may be biased in my opinion, but I truly believe that we have the best students in the world!

Have a great summer! See you next year.

Fourth Grade Visits

The Frick Art Museum

By: Ms. Clayton

Our fourth grade students recently attended a field trip to the Frick Art Museum in Pittsburgh. What an exciting day! The students were able to explore outstanding examples of Italian Renaissance paintings, 18th-century French paintings, furniture and decorative arts. After touring the museum, our fourth graders created their own works of art as well!

Students were also able to tour the famous Clayton House. One of many mansions that once occupied Millionaire’s Row in the late 1800s. Students visited Helen Clay Frick’s childhood bedroom and the dining room where Mr. Frick once hosted a luncheon for President Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to this, the students were allowed to tour the kitchen where as many as six meals a day were prepared without the modern day amenities that we enjoy today. The students learned a lot about life at that time.

Finally, the students were able to tour the Car and Carriage Museum. This consisted of a great hall filled with some of the first horseless carriages and automobiles owned by Mr. Frick. While admiring the beautiful carriages and cars, students learned about Pittsburgh’s role in the developing automobile industry. The students enjoyed learning how transportation has evolved over time!

Fourth grade had an AWESOME time at the Frick Art Museum. It was definitely a day to remember!

Fourth Grade Gives Back!

By: Ms. Clayton

On Saturday, April 8th some of the 4th graders at East Primary volunteered their time for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Kennedy Park in Vandergrift. Ms. Clayton teamed up with Miss Vanessa at the Vandergrift Library to make this possible.

The students used their playtime to fill the eggs with candy prior to the event. This was no easy task. There were hundreds upon hundreds of eggs! On the day of the event, a select group of students hid all of the eggs throughout the park. They gave up their Saturday morning in order to benefit boys and girls younger than themselves. The Easter Egg Hunt was a success and all the children enjoyed taking part. We are proud of our fourth graders for giving back to their community! Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Hagofsky for chaperoning the day of the event.

Sp”EGG”tacular Multiplication

By: Mrs. Dobrinick

The third grade has been practicing their multiplication facts to develop fluency. Students need to be able to recall the answers to basic math facts automatically and without hesitation. Many of the students have mastered the Math Rockets not only for multiplication but also for division. Students have learned that multiplication and division are inverse operations; that means that they are opposite operations that undo each other. If you know the multiplication facts then you know the division facts. For example, if you know 3 x 6 = 18 and 6 x 3 = 18 then you also know 18 ÷ 6 = 3 or 18 ÷ 3 = 6. Students also have been learning the vocabulary words associated with multiplication and division sentences so they can explain their work in their word problems.

Before Easter we held our Smart reward. Students were given a multiplication fact of two factors on the top half of a plastic Easter egg. They then had to locate the product (answer) on the bottom half of a plastic Easter egg that was hidden somewhere on our playground. Once students found their product, they showed it to their teacher, placed it in their class basket and received another fact. This continued until all 144 eggs had been matched. Students had fun searching for the answers as well as helping classmates locate their answers. Ms. Hagofsky received meal coupons from Texas Roadhouse which were presented to all students who attended the Smart reward. Not only did students have fun on the egg hunt they also were able to review math multiplication facts. We hope to make this an annual tradition for East Primary third graders.
