Principals NewsWelcome to Week 8.

Presentation Night The annual Presentation Night will be held Tuesday, 17th December. We hope that all families are able to join us. The evening will start with a BBQ where dinner can be purchased for reasonable prices; food will be available from 5.30pm. Our formal presentation will begin at 6pm. We hope to see you there to celebrate what has been a great year.

Class Parties at Big 4 This week on Friday students will be celebrating the end of the year at the Big 4 Saltwater Holiday Park at Palmers Island. The P&C are very kindly donating fruit and BBQ food for the day. Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. Please pack recess and drinks.

Kind regards, Ellie Wiseman Principal

to our students of the week!

Congratulations

Thank you to the wonderful 3/4 students for an awesome camp. It was a privilege to take you away and the best fun. Our intensive swimming scheme commenced this week. The best program we have run yet. Thank you families for your great organisation that has given us a smooth start. The qualified swim instructors have assessed all students and placed them in groups. Students can move groups as their ability progresses throughout the scheme.  Parent/ teacher Interviews  It would be wonderful to touch base with all parents.  Thank you to the parents who have booked in a time or attended so far.

K/1/2Welcome to week 8! Our second day of intensive swimming program! Already I can see improvements in water confidence and swimming techniques, well done kids! Could you please write your child's name on their belongings to make it easier to identify if necessary.  Topaz will be spending time with Nathan

this week. Thanks to the parents who have organised interviews for your child/children. We strongly encourage that we get to meet with every parent and caregiver as your child/children have grown so much!

Take care and kind regards, Miss Ellem and Ms Clare

Mrs EssexManaging Worry With the recent bushfire crisis in our little part of the world many children tend to worry. Worry and anxiety in kids can be very common, also very treatable. While we all experience anxious feelings at times, certain children will suffer more greatly, with their anxieties interrupting the functioning of their daily lives. This could mean that it affects their sleeping, their socialising, or their ability to concentrate. As parents we need to help children to process their anxieties in age-appropriate ways. Many psychologists and therapists that work with anxious children recommend   introducing a ‘worry box’ into a child’s daily routine. ‘A worry box is a therapeutic approach to addressing excessive worry and anxiety in children. This modality aims to take the worry and anxiety off of the child, and places it onto a tangible item such as a box’ (Practical Parenting, 2011)

A ‘worry box’ acts as a metaphor for the things that are making your child anxious. The worry box is particularly beneficial for young children, because it helps them to understand their thoughts and feelings, and give them control over them. The symbolic nature of the worry box helps to show kids that their thoughts are just that – thoughts – and negative ones won’t have an impact on the future. The worry box is a great way for young kids to start understanding and identifying their emotions, and dealing with them in a purposeful and productive way at school. Without intervention, children tend to grow into their fears, not grow out of them. Once children have learned how to challenge their worry and outsmart the tricks the brain can play, they are no longer at the whim of their fearful imaginations. Today, kids with anxiety can expect to learn the skills they need to lead a full and happy life. 3/4/5/6 Welcome to week 8! Parent Interviews I would like to thank those parents who have already sent in their request times, if you do not hear from me then that time is okay. Please see the Interview request sheet sent home. It would be wonderful to touch base with all parents this year. Please fill in a time that suits you or make another time request in the box on the side and send the sheet back to the office. Homework Homework seems to have fallen by the wayside in many households. I would like to thank the parents and children who have committed themselves to completing homework tasks all term. Children have been given a homework grid and reading recording sheet. Please ensure all work is written or glued into their homework book. Peer Support Our next session will be Thursday 5th December. Last week each group talked about what each child can bring for the Peer Support Party. Your child should have received a sheet stating what they would bring to share with their group. Each group have between 8-10 people. Please limit “sometimes” foods. The final session will be a celebration of how well they have worked together. Year 6 Graduation Dinner We will celebrate Year 6 completing their primary school years with a dinner at Yamba Backpackers on Wednesday 11th December at 6:30pm. Year 6 parents are asked to complete the note sent home last week so that we can confirm our booking numbers. Intensive Swimming Scheme Our swimming has begun! We are looking forward to seeing how each child develops their skills and confidence in the water over the next two weeks. Please make sure that your child has everything ready each day. Regards, Ms Hardaker
