It is compulsory to attend school, and students should only be absent in exceptional circumstances. I ask parents/guardians not to schedule extended holidays during the term, especially for Year 10, 11 and 12. Our College must meet VCAA (Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority) and our teachers must ensure that work is ‘authenticated’ – that is they must sight students completing the work, especial- ly for VCAL and VCE studies. If your son or daughter is absent from school, they must ensure it is for a legitimate reason and they must bring a note on the day of their return to their home group teacher. Reminder re School Uniform A reminder that the College Council policy states that all students must wear compulsory winter uniform in Term 2 and 3. Please contact your year level co-ordinator if you need to discuss a reason why you are unable to have an item of the school uniform.

On Tuesday, 12th July, Noble Park Secondary College versed Saint James in a heated debate on the topic “Online gambling should be banned”. We on the negative team believed that online gambling should not be banned. The debaters of the night - Bryce Berends, Zoann Wood and Laiba Rehman -did a fantastic job in persuading the audience that online gambling should not be banned. With help from Ms Smith and Ms Lawson, also with the excellent debating skills of our speakers, victory was assured to be ours. We now stand atop the ladder as the leading school in the Keysborough region of the DAV. Best speaker was awarded to the third speaker of the night, Laiba Rehman. Debating is an excellent life skill, that improves confidence and knowledge and it enhances team working skills and our students are certainly taking advantage of this opportunity, using their debating skills efficiently. Well done everyone!

City CampThe City Camp was a successful Year 9 Camp organized by the Junior School Captains, Bryce and Laiba, with help from Mr. Banovic and Mr. Caughey. The great amount of work, excitement, nerves and wait finally paid off as we headed on camp on the 18th of July till the 21st. Along with the Year 9 students, we were accompanied by Mr. Barry and Ms. Cotela as well as our Year Level Leaders. The aim of the city camp was for the students to explore Melbourne, and learn about the rich history and resources that it holds and build trust in ourselves, each other and our teachers as well as build resilience. We learnt about some current issues going on in Melbourne, specifically homelessness. We learned about the causes of homelessness, why it is such a big issue, and how we, as teenagers, can contribute in solving this problem. We also visited the Melbourne Museum, learning more about our ancestors and history thoroughly. From the Eureka Sky Deck to Melbourne’s famous Graffiti Alley’s, Arts centre, Crown Casino and it’s amazing fire display, Federation Square, Queen Vic Market, Melbourne central, and going off exploring on our own, we experienced everything Melbourne had to offer. We also did the amazing race, getting into teams, getting on trams and running around Melbourne on our own trying to get to our destinations which included Parliament House and Melbourne Star was a thrilling experi-ence; it gave us a sense of responsibility, and we were really happy that the teachers put such a great amount of trust in us to go off and learn and explore on our own. The City Camp was an amazing experience for all of us; it was a great way of learning about our hometown as well as mak-ing memories.

Shinminato Cultural ExchangeOn June 23rd, Mr. Mark Cubit and his wife Amanda visited the school to talk to the students traveling to Shinminato. Both the Cubits are former students and Mark was the first student from this school to travel to Shinminato in the 1980s. Mark was also instrumental in forming the sister school relationship which was signed in November 1995. Mark was able to tell the students about his time in Shinminato and answered many questions that the students put to him. We would like to send a big thank you to Mark and his wife, and we hope that they will come back again to talk to the students about their adventures when they return.
