NEWSLETTER Issue 3, Term 3 2015 Dear Parents, Students & Staff Although 2018 has been a very busy and difficult year for the school, we have had numerous exciting and successful achievements from our students and staff which we have been able to celebrate. Our staff have done a wonderful job supporting and encouraging our students to excel and be the best they can possibly be; as a result many of our students have achieved their personal goals. Some have achieved in their sporting fields, their artistic pursuits and others have achieved academically. I have thoroughly enjoyed the times I have been able to engage with the students and those that have followed us on Facebook may have seen the many opportunities I have grabbed a selfie when judging, spectating or cheering them on in their pursuits. One of my favourite parts of this job is being able to see our students involved in the school and the many activities that are available for them. I have also enjoyed being able to share with our community the many individual successes that our students have had outside of school on our Facebook page. Please keep sending these wonderful achievements through to the school; we love to celebrate all aspects of our students’ lives. We have said goodbye to our wonderful Year 12 students and I wish them well in their future endeavors. The Student Leaders have embraced their role this year and worked hard with the Student Services team to raise money for various charities and their own school community. The School Captains and the Year 12 Leadership team have introduced many initiatives this year which have been embraced by the school as good practice; I thank them for leaving a lasting mark on this team. Also, a big thank you to all the Student Leaders for the help and support they have given at our assemblies, parent nights and focus weeks run by Student Services. My sincere thanks to the school community and for all the support, acknowledgement and feedback we have received. It has been such a positive year and the way that you have embraced our changes has allowed us to share the many positives that are happening within the school. To the school staff who continue to work hard to provide students with the very best educational experiences and learning within the school, I cannot thank you enough. Finally I would like to farewell the staff who leave us and thank them for the support they have given the school: Dana Rajanaygam (HASS), Prue Kirsch (Phys Ed) and Geraldine Thomas (Science). I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Ms Laura Moore who became our Associate Principal for the year after the sudden loss of Mr Justin Davies. Ms Moore has done a wonderful job in this role and will be returning next year as our HOSS of Year 9 and 10 students. Term 4 saw the election of the School Captains for 2019. A big congratulations to Hayley Withnell and Ena Mickle who will take on these very exciting roles.

Other exciting changes to the Leadership Team will see our Student Leadership team becoming the House Leaders for our new school Houses.

The implementation of Houses (Stirling, Peel, Peron and Carnac) will support the existing Sub-School structure and administration, by assisting the good standing process and contributing towards a positive school culture. This structure will build trust between year groups and provide opportunities for individual and team success that will develop student’s self-efficacy and sense of achievement. Houses will directly affect the continued growth of a culture of student achievement and engagement, community involvement and enriched positive relationships between staff, students and the wider Rockingham SHS community. The role of the House Coordinator is to oversee the leadership and functioning of the allocated House by:

• Interacting with students and staff to engender a supportive and caring environment within the House.

• Positive promotion of House across the school. • Promoting participation of students in whole school

events, such as Athletics Carnivals. • Assisting in the encouragement and monitoring of

school standards of dress, attendance, ABE’s and Being our Best.

• Attending, helping coordinate and being involved in social events including their students.

• Developing, reviewing and monitoring the effectiveness of the House Point System.

• Being a proactive and enthusiastic member of the Student Services Team.

After this, Peel resided in the newly aptly named Rockingham. Peel was eventually granted ownership of the land extending from Cockburn Sound to the Murray River. Facing hardships along the way,

Peels failures were often partly due to series of unfortunate events. Peel was described as a man who was proud and hot tempered yet he held his vision, courage and strict standards of behaviour. Today the Peel region encapsulates the area where all Rockingham Senior High School students reside. GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK CLASS OF 2018!!! On October 12 the staff and students said farewell to our Intensity Year 12’s. Students dressed up and celebrated with staff the conclusion of their 5 years at Rockingham Senior High School. A special mention to the School Captain, Josh Gray who dressed up as Mr Koios on the day (fake nose included). Intensity students have always lived up to their values of Strength, Tenacity and Love. We would like to praise the students for their wonderful behaviour and for the wonderful memories that they have given us over the past 5 years.

YEAR 12 FINAL DAY

Page 4: Dates to Remember€¦ · supportive and caring environment within the House. • Positive promotion of House across the school. • Promoting participation of students in whole school

The Class of 2018 had their Valedictory Ceremony at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Monday October 15. This year, in a change to previous years, students sat on the stage throughout the event, and the Dignitaries and staff sat in the audience. Our students looked amazing and their parents were able to focus on the achievements of the Class of 2018. Our Student Captains Joshua Gray and Caitlin Evans gave wonderful heartfelt speeches of their time spent at the school. This amazing group of students are now ready to take on the world and we wish you well in all your endeavours.

Year 6 students who will be attending the school in 2019, came to the school’s annual Orientation Day on 30 November 2018. Orientation Day for our students took on a new look, with students spending the day with the 2 teachers who will be their main teachers next year. A big thank you to our Student leaders who once again supported this important day by showing parents and students to the Gym, and acted as support for these students in their classes throughout the day. Students and parents were introduced to the many staff that they would be working with next year and heard inspirational words from the Principal, Mr Stan Koios and met our School Board Chair, Patchara Weggers. Many of the students that attended had the privilege of being a part of the Transition Week when the feeder Primary Schools each spent a day in the high school to discover what a day in high school looked like. For some though, this was their first visit to the school and they had the opportunity to meet with their new class mates. We look forward to helping you grow to “be your best” through out the next 6 years.

This term, 2 teams of Year 9 Science competed for the first time in the SUBs competition at Northlake Senior Campus. This event saw many teams from other schools competing in this STEAM project. With a full day of presentations and demonstrations of the models they had developed our students managed to rise above the competition to win 1st and 2nd place in the mini ROV Senior Division! This was a huge achievement for our students when you consider they were competing against schools that have been on television for their engagement in the STEAM Program. Clare Clayton, HOLA Science, said that “the students have done the school so proud and their hard work was obvious! Chas King is also an amazing teacher and it’s fantastic to see such a wonderful outcome for her and her students. “ A big thank you to the parents and the companies that sponsored and supported the students throughout the project; it was greatly appreciated.

This year our Year 11 students had the opportunity to visit the Harry Perkins Biodiversity centre. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to link the curriculum they have been learning in the classroom with the real word and the work opportunities open to them in the future.

On Sunday 21 October 2018, Mr Isaac Thomas and 3 of our students (Ankia Mentjies, Waaka Hepi and Sabrina McKay Tukerman) appeared on Telethon . They presented a cheque to Telethon for money raised by the school during the annual Tryathon event. This year students who took part in the school's Tryathon raised $26,500 for Telethon. This was a wonderful opportunity for us all to celebrate in the wonderful achievement of our students raising money for the Perth Community.

The Library has been very busy this term with its many activities. Below are a few of their displays.

Remembrance Day 2018 In conjunction with Remembrance Day 2018 the library created their annual Remembrance Day display. Mannequins were dressed in outfits similar to those worn by the men and women during the First World War. The library has a large collection of World War One literature which was on display for students to view.

Roald Dahl Day 2018 September 13th is the worldwide celebration of Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl is one of the student’s favourite authors within the Rockingham Senior High School Library and a display was developed in order to showcase the Roald Dahl novels we have within the library.

Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover You can’t judge a book by its cover. This interactive display allowed students to borrow a book from the library, but there was one condition. Students were unaware of the book they were borrowing and were taking home a mystery read.

James Foley Workshop On Tuesday December 11 author and illustrator, James Foley visited the Rockingham Senior High School Library to host an interactive workshop with students from Years 7 and 8. James Foley explained the process behind illustrating the book My Dead Bunny and examined character design with students. Students were able to put their illustrative knowledge into action and practice drawing the different facial expressions shown throughout the workshop. At the end of the session James Foley drew a picture of the main character from the book My Dead Bunny and donated it to be displayed in the library.

The finale to the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra’s (WAYJO) yearlong focus on Women in Jazz saw Rockingham SHS students being wowed by one of Perth’s newest jazz ensembles, the Artemis Orchestra. The music of Australia’s great female composers and arrangers dazzled students, and had them so engaged in this interactive performance. We would like to thank WAYJO for sponsoring this valuable event and we look forward to seeing more live music in the future.

On Tuesday 20 November, students engaged in the Process Plant Operations course were able to visit the Kleenheat refinery in Kwinana for a site tour. Two of our Year 11 students, Kaleb Parker and Chantelle Whitaker, are engaged in this innovative program. The students were able to see how a gas refinery works and operates and were able to see in a practical setting a lot of the skills and knowledge they have been learning in their course.

The Year 7 & 8 ESC students had a fabulous time participating in tabloid activities and a round robin competition, as part of our Netball Inclusion Day. This event was planned and delivered by our Year 10 Specialist Netball girls, with a little help from the Year 9 Netballers, at the Mike Barnett Sport Complex. The Netballers have been completing their Foundation Coaching and Umpiring accreditations, culminating in this final assessment for the Year 10's.

Thank you to the lovely EA's and Miss Kirsch who helped out with this event. We really do appreciate your efforts. Well done to the ESC students... You all did such a fantastic job, and played some awesome Netball! It was so great to see you all have so much fun and make new friends on the day!

We are so very proud of the Year 9 & 10 Specialist Netball girls... you all did an amazing job, showing such patience, compassion and maturity. We are so proud of you all!!!

NETBALL INCLUSION DAY

Specialist Netball Term 4 Update Things have been quite busy in the Netball Program this term. Here is a summary of what has been happening: Netball WA Ambassador Visit - 25 October We were lucky enough to have Sarah Gray, the Sport Development Officer (Player/Coach) from Netball WA come down to work with us. Our Year 7 & 8's learnt about all things that are unique to Netball, the importance of school-netball-life balance and the Netball Development Pathway. The Year 10's participated in a training session focused on decision making. Rock-Well Carnival - 31 October Some great netball was on display in the inaugural Rock-Well Carnival held at Success Netball Association. Our full Netball contingent participated and we are super proud of how you all conducted yourselves, putting in some great performances. Well done! Match Play Assessment Day - 15 November We had our final Match Play Assessment Day for the year with our full Netball contingent involved. In what were warm conditions, the girls participated in a round robin, 5 a-side format, with rolling substitutions. Once again you all did a fantastic job, showing high levels of maturity, composure and self management. We are constantly impressed by this unique set of skills that you display on top of your Netball.

On Tuesday 4 December, the Performing Arts students participated in “A Rockin' Christmas”, a celebration of the personal growth and teamwork put in by all Music and Dance students over the past school year. The Richard Draper Centre was filled to the brim with supportive family, friends and teachers who enjoyed everything from Solo Vocal Performances to Christmas Themed Dances of troupes with more than 30 dancers. One particular performance that stood out was from the

THE ARTS

Choir, and their rendition of Walking in a Winter Wonderland for Mr Koios! Many thanks go to Emily Phyllis-Vidler for hosting the evening, to Mrs Fay, Mr Burke, Mrs Brown and all the Instrumental Teachers for their hard work putting this event together. The Arts Department really appreciate the time and effort students have put into their learning this year, and would like to wish families a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SPECIALIST NETBALL

On Tuesday 4 December, Miss Rotheram and I, accompanied by Mr Wake, took our Year 7 class to explore Perth Zoo. We learned about the threats and dangers facing Western Australian native animals, and even got to meet a couple! We then split up into groups and took our own journeys through the Asian Rainforest, the African Savannah and on an Australian Bush Walk. One of the most anticipated events of the day, after missing out at Elizabeth Quay last time, was riding the 100 year old carousel. Overall it was a fantastic (if exhausting!) way to end the year with a wonderfully curious and unique group of young men and women. Thank you for an amazing year, I am very proud to have known and taught you all - Miss Damonse

Our Year 10 River Cruise was held on 6 December. Students and staff who attended the event has a fantastic time dancing the night away on the Swan River. There was so much laughter and dancing throughout the event that by the time the event was finished, it felt much later than it was. This event is always a great way to celebrate the end of Middle Schooling.

finally Carnac. The feedback from students, staff and parents was that it was a well organised and enjoyable day.

Wednesday 12 December we held our last Whole of School Assembly for the year. This year, in a continuation with the different way we are approaching our events, we wanted to celebrate the students Academic successes at the end of the year, instead of at the beginning of the year, as we have in the past. We increased the number of subject awards to ensure that we are able to celebrate all students achievements be they in Dance, Metal work, English etc. It was wonderful to see the number of students who have worked hard to reach the top in their subject areas. What we had not expected was the number of certificates that were awarded to students in their Year group for Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for the number of A’s awarded in their reports. Year 7 students were awarded 9 Silver badges and 36

Our Year 9 Rugby League Academy students made it to the Grand Final this term. The game took place at the NRL WA Training & Education Centre. Both schools Butler College and Rockingham Senior High School, saved their best performance for last, with an outstanding display of Rugby League. Butler took an early lead, and went up 12-0, dominating the majority of the first half. A late Rockingham try saw them halve the deficit, and trail 12-6 at Half Time. The second half started with a bang, with Rockingham levelling scores at 12-all. Butler then replied straight from the kick off, gaining possession and stretching their lead to 18-12. Another quick try saw Butler lead 22-12, with 10 minutes remaining. The game then erupted, with Rockingham scoring from a 60m break, closing the gap to 22-16. A try on the stroke of full time saw Rockingham bring the score to 22-20, with the kick to occur after the siren. A missed kick from Rockingham meant the final score ended up 22-20, with Butler being crowned champions of the Year 9 competition for the first time! A big congratulations to the Year 9 team who played a very strong game. You did a great job representing the school.

With the naming of the new school Houses, students were a part of the Whole of School Athletics Carnival. Rockingham Senior High School had gone away from holding this event, but this year the Health & Physical Education Department took on the challenge of organising this event for all staff and students. Thursday 6 December saw our staff and students take to the field in a number of organised and fun events for all. The competition started early though, with the students and staff dressed in their House colours. The oval was a riot of colours, the behaviour was outstanding and the competition was friendly. This was the first House completion and we saw Peel win the overall event, with Stirling second, Peron third and

2018 HALLOWEEN DRESS UP Our Year 11 Student Leaders organised a Halloween dress up day today. Students also enjoyed games and face painting. A total of $351.85 was raised. The money is going buy bikes and school supplies for children in remote areas of Cambodia. Our students will follow the progress of these children over the next year.

P.A.R.T.Y Excursion This term a group of Year 11 students went to Royal Perth Hospital to participate in the P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) program. It was an amazing day where students learnt about the effects of risk taking behaviour including major trauma injuries. Students listened to speakers who had experienced major trauma, visited the emergency department, trauma unit, ICU and rehabilitation. It was a very emotional and intense day but the group got a lot out of it.
