MARY OLIVER WRITES: Once, years ago, I emerged from the woods

in the early morning at the end of a walk and – it was the most casual of moments – as I stepped from under the trees into the mild, pouring-down sunlight I experienced a sudden impact, a seizure of happiness. It was not the drowning sort of happiness, rather the floating sort. I made no struggle toward it; it was given. Time seemed to vanish. Urgency vanished. Any important difference between myself and all other things vanished. I knew that I belonged to the world, and felt comfortably my own containment in the totality. I did not feel that I understood any mystery, not at all; rather that I could be happy and feel blessed within the perplexity – the summer morning, its gentleness, the sense of the great work being done though the grass where I stood scarcely trembled.

As I say, it was the most casual of moments, not mystical as the word is usually meant, for there was no vision, or anything extraordinary at all, but only a sudden awareness of the citizenry of all things within one world: leaves, dust, thrushes and finches, men and women. And yet it was a moment I have never

forgotten, and upon which I have based many decisions in the years since.

– Mary Oliver, Long Life: Essays and Other Writings, (Da Capo Press, 2005), 33 – 34.

I hope that during these summer days, soon to end, we all will have had a chance to experience such casual moments. Whether in nature, in the quiet rooms, at temple, or in the midst of the busy city, I hope we can all learn to appreciate the blessings of perplexity.

It would also be nice to tryout not being our usual selves, at least not too much. There once was a wealthy business executive who was not challenged in the self-esteem department. He had come to believe he could do most anything he set his mind to. While on vacation one summer, he decided to take up sailing. Figuring he could teach himself how to do it, he read a sailing manual, then rented the largest sailboat he could find.

All went well until he encountered what veteran sailors call “a bit of dirty weather.” Although it went against his basic nature to admit it, he decided he was in trouble and began punching buttons on the radio and calling for help. Somehow he managed to connect with a Coast Guard operator, whose first question was, “What is your position?”

The man hesitated not a second before answering: “Vice President for International Sales and Recruitment.”

Let’s remember we have more positions than our official positions. Isn’t that in part what summer is for?

I also hope to enjoy still some Shabbat moments with you and our shared Sholom family.

With sholom,

Rabbi Edwin [email protected]

Page 9: D’var - Temple Sholom · 2017-07-28 · D’var A sacred community that embraces, inspires and matters AUGUST 2017 MARY OLIVER WRITES: Once, years ago, I emerged from the woods

Temple Sholom has benefitted in wonderful ways this past year due to generous donor support that has offset critical expenses from the mundane such as utilities and maintenance to our sublime worship, community celebrations and congregational experiences. We have shared a wonderful year together: Cantor Ben-David charmed us with her rich voice and engaging personality, transitioning into her new role so seamlessly it is difficult to believe that she joined our congregation only a year ago. Similarly, we blended Or Chadash into our community in a beautifully warm and welcoming way. This year we look forward to all that our new staffers - Executive Director, Jeremy Perlin and Assistant Rabbi, Scott Gellman will bring to help set us on a path for an exciting year ahead.

Important donor support has allowed us to offer Temple membership to those who cannot otherwise afford the full commitment and provided significant support for Religious School, putting a

priority on supplemental Jewish education for our future generations. Substantial gifts to the Monday Meal program once again enabled Temple Sholom member volunteers to prepare and serve hot meals to the underserved in our community each week. Thank you for making a meaningful difference in so many lives and helping to enrich our community.

5778 is a year we are looking forward to with great anticipation - Temple Sholom of Chicago’s 150th Anniversary. We will have much to celebrate in 2017-18. Co-Chairs Beth and David Inlander and Teri and Roger Rudich have been working with volunteers and staff to create an engaging yearlong calendar of activities for everyone to enjoy - young and old, members and non-members. There are also impressive capital improvements underway, including a third floor classroom makeover for the Gan Shalom and Religious School students, bimah enhancements in the sanctuary to facilitate more inclusive services and

plans for a permanent timeline installation commemorating Temple Sholom’s 150th Anniversary.

In the coming months you will receive details about our ambitious Seeds of Light initiative, which will serve to bolster Temple Sholom’s comprehensive strategic planning efforts of the past few years and bring to fruition the 18 recommendations adopted by the Board this past spring.

Usher In 5778!Ushers are a significant part of the High Holy Day experience. They are the welcoming faces of Temple Sholom, who greet our congregants and guests. Ushers also provide assistance to those who may be less familiar with our services and building. They ensure the smooth and timely flow of services. Please know that ushering will not keep you from sitting with family or friends. Ushers have reserved seats in exchange for their service. We are also looking for families with B’nai Mitzvah age children or older to help usher during Family-Friendly Services.

Interested? Contact Julie Adler at [email protected]

Physicians NeededAs we approach the High Holy Days, we once again expect a large turnout for services. At times such as these, there is an increased risk of medical emergencies. For this reason, we are looking for volunteers to provide medical care should someone need assistance.

Interested? Contact Julie Adler at [email protected]
