Join Us for the Dave and Dave Collections! April 27th is a rare day. On this day, you will be privileged to view two outstanding private collections - the Dave & Dave Collections. Dave Beugen and Dave Simon are pleased to host us for a visit to their collections of astonishing motorcars. Following our tours of beautiful motorcars , we will partake in an outstanding Italian feast from a small, impressive eatery that is known for producing quality products from simple ingredients and turning them into artisanal foods such as home made pizzas and pastas, and handmade gelatos.

We begin our tour in the South Bay in El Segundo at the collection of Dave Beugen, who has been a RROC So-Cal member for thirty years. His collection is not huge, but it is very impressive. It includes a 1947 Silver Wraith Gurney Nutting DHC and a Mark VI Mallalieu, Mercia 2-seater. He also has two Austin Healeys from the late fifties and early sixties, not to mention three spectacular motorcycles. Here we will gather to kick some tires, check out what wonderful PMCs you have brought to the occasion, enjoy some light refreshments and caffeine to kick start your engines, and check out the treasures Dave has displayed for us.

About 11:00 a.m. we will get back into our own PMCs and, with the aid of maps, GPS or maybe a nice caravan, we will head East to Dave Simon’s collection in Gardena. This private collection has over 100 cars of all manufacturers. In addition, there is lots of movie memorabilia and several motorcycles. This is definitely not a collection you should even consider missing.

Then about 12:45 or so we will proceed to our Italian Feast. This is either a two-block walk, or you can relocate your PMC to the Eatalian Café’s parking lot or the limited street parking around it. Now, don’t look for a fancy Italian villa facade. You will be in an industrial area and if you are looking for that unique boutique of a restaurant, you will definitely miss it. The resources of this restaurant were put into the making and quality of the food and not into the design of the building. However, prepare yourself for homemade pastas and thin crust pizzas fresh from the open ovens. We will start with fresh bread and a delightful salad. Then we will be served family style with two kinds of pizza, two different pastas and an original chicken dish. All of this will be followed by a selection of desserts including their handmade gelato and freshly made cannolis. They also have some very special house wines, but those will be “no-host”. All of this while a captivated audience gazes in awe at the gleaming mozzarella machine, the swirling batch of pistachio gelato and the flour-coated hands of the bakers massaging heaps of dough for homemade pasta and pizza.

Join us! This will be a very special day

APRIL 2019

Happy Easter!

February and March brought us a lot of much needed rain and California is now officially free of the drought after more than seven years. It’s time to get back on the road; enjoy the blue sky and fresh air; and also start preparing our PMCs for our 46th Annual Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club Concours d’Elegance at the Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Over its thirty-four year history, the Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance has grown to be one of the outstanding automotive events in Southern California. First staged in 1986, the Concours has its home on the picturesque lawns of Huntington Beach Central Park in Huntington Beach. Central Park lies adjacent to the Huntington Beach Public Library and Cultural Resource Center at Talbert Avenue and Goldenwest Street. The field of entrants includes the best domestic, British, European, Asian, including both vintage through current automobiles and motorcycles.

In 2019 they expect 100 cars and motorcycles on Saturday and perhaps as many as 400 motorcars on Sunday. We will be joining the festivities on Sunday, June 2nd. We will have our own dedicated area for showing, judging, and enjoying the day’s festivities. Ronnys Tech Meets at Ronnys Garage are always both inspiring and intimidating (see other story on March Tech Meet in this Newsletter) but it is time for get our PMCs out of the garage and start grooming them for our 46th annual Concours D’Elegance. To accommodate our membership, we have two special scheduled events coming up: • Our Saturday April 6th Tech Meet at Ronnys Garage is on judging our PMCs and• Our Saturday May 4th Tech Meet at Ronnys Garage is on detailing your PMC. We are seeking both volunteers and judges for our annual Concours d’Elegance this year, so please reach out to either Chief Judge Ronny Shaver for judging or host Karen Perrault to volunteer and join in the fun. Being a judge is an excellent and fun way to get to better understand your own PMC. There is always a lot to learn from Ronny and the other judges and owners; it really rounds out your personal experience, satisfaction, and love for this very special marque. As announced at past-Chairman Lou Oddo’s terrific awards event in January, we want each of our members to make at least one personal referral of a potential new member this year. In 2019 we are asking that each existing member invite a guest to one of our events who may be a future candidate for membership in our club. This individual can include anyone, including younger people who are enthusiasts and not yet owners. We started the New Year requesting a more active participation as to what our membership would like to do this year – and we are hearing from you – so please keep providing your Board with your input on your suggestions. In Closing: Thank you for your support and friendship. Happy Motoring! Dr. Donald W. [email protected]: Mobile

RROC Concours d’Elegance The RROC So-Cal 45th annual Concours d’Elegance is on Sunday, June 2nd and we’re excited to present a new concept. This year we are combining our Concours with the Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance, a two-day event in it’s 34th year. Our cars will be on the field on Sunday, June 2nd and will be displayed in our own section . We will be doing our own judging, lead by our Chief Judge Ronny Shaver and beautiful awards will be presented to the winners of each of our classes. The grounds are beautiful with trees to shade our cars and lovely grass upon which to picnic. We will also be very close to the ocean so it should be cool, unlike Santa Anita in past years.

This Huntington Beach event has been very popular for the last 34 years, and has been a fundraiser for the Children’s Resource Center wing at the Huntington Beach Public Library. They have graciously allowed the RROC So-Cal to be an important part of this spectacular car event. The Library is easy to locate since it is off Goldenwest, which is an exit off the 405 freeway in Orange County. Our cost to participate in this outstanding Concours is only $40, which includes one PMC and two people per vehicle. We will need to arrive between 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. and all cars must remain on the field until 4:00 p.m. There will be three options for lunch: bring your own picnic lunch, enjoy lunch from a variety of food truck, or for an additional $25 per person, you can enjoy a VIP Lunch, which we have been told is excellent. We need judges! If you are interested in judging, please contact Chief Judge Ronny Shaver at [email protected]. Ronny is conducting a judging seminar on April 6th so plan on attending to learn all of the fine points of judging with our new judging sheet. Never judged before? That doesn’t matter! Each team will be formed with an experienced judge so this is a great way to learn more about our PMCs. If you would like to volunteer to assist at the Concours, please contact Karen Perrault at [email protected]. We need assistance in many areas and Karen would really appreciate your help.

We encourage all of you to join us in this new location for a wonderful time, so mark your calendars for June 2nd. This is going to be an exciting 46th RROC So-Cal Concours d’Elegance, so let’s get as many of our PMCs out to this event as possible.

Join us on June 8th for our breakfast meet in the Valley at the 94th Aero Squadron. We’ll meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot and we’ll be first in the door when they open at 11:00.

The address is 16320 Raymer St., Van Nuys.See you there!

Ronny’s Rollin’ for the RROC! Our Chief Judge and Technical Chairman, Ronny Shaver, is running for one of the director seats on the RROC National Board of Directors. As we all know, Ronny is one of the driving forces in our region. In addition to being a fountain of information and a treasure to our region, Ronny writes many articles for the newsletter and conducts monthly technical meets on the first Saturday every month. Nearly 200 clips of the tech meets have been posted on YouTube in order to share Ronny’s knowledge with Rolls-Royce owners and enthusiasts the world over.

Now Ronny needs something from us. He needs our vote. You should have received an electronic email ballot from National, or a paper ballot in the latest issue of TheFlyingLady. Please vote for Ronny so we can have a local Southern California Region voice on the National Board. And not just any voice but a voice that actually has lots to say that’s actually worth hearing.

The Cover StoryBy Sherry Stern

The Winner of the 2018 Most Improved Rolls-Royce Award 2018 was the year of primer and paint in the restoration process of my Cloud. Prime, sand, repeat. “Watching paint dry” is a cliché for tedious. The primer process is even more so. However, letting the primer cure adequately is the most important aspect of prep work before beginning to paint and the restoration shop takes their time.

Deciding on the shade of white for my car took a while, but the results are worth it. The car had been thoroughly stripped before there was a conversation about final color, and there was no original paint left with which to color match. With nothing to go on, I run tests between PPG and Glasurit paints, comparing both the “porcelain white” of the Cloud era and the “acrylic white” of early Shadows. I learn that “Tudor white” and “Old English white” are not official Rolls-Royce colors.

I go down the rabbit hole of custom white color not once, but twice. The paint shop refuses to reveal their formulas, telling me that if I ever need a respray that they would have my color on file. I don’t feel comfortable with this so I decline. Also, I realize the custom white shades are so close to the factory formulas that I would be the only person who would ever notice the difference. None of the whites I am comparing are exactly what I remember the car looking like. Finally, an East coast car friend points out that the white I remember is white paint that has oxidized in the strong Southern California sun for 50 years, and that I will never find an exact match. Doh!

Hearing this I relax and select a white that I like. It is a warm, not starchy white, and gleams in the sunlight. No one will ever hurl the ultimate Rolls-Royce insult of “wedding white” at my car.

Finally, the car is painted. She looks fabulous. Chrome pieces begin to be added back on. She is still a work-in-progress, but from a bare metal shell my girl is starting to look like what she is: a glorious, beautiful machine. “Most improved” indeed.

March Tech Meet at Ronnys GarageBy Dr. Donald W. Wise

Armed with my trusty Tylenol (my doctors have denied me my Advil after a recent discovery of a stomach ulcer and internal bleeding), I braved the wet freeways of Orange Coun-ty on a rainy Saturday morning and left Newport Beach with coffee cup in hand up the 55 Freeway to Ronnys Garage for our March Tech Meet on March 2nd.

For those of you who do not make an effort to attend these events – you are really missing out on some very fun comradery and a greater understanding and appreciation each month of the idiosyncratic demeanor of these wonderful British motorcars – Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

The two vehicles du jour were:

• Ronnys Shaver’s1980 LHD Silver Shadow II; and• Steve Power-Fardy’s 1965 RHD Silver Cloud III saloon.

After mingling around the garage with a cup of coffee and donut in hand, inspecting the various motorcars on the racks and the hard deck for servicing and repairs, we gathered around Ronnys beautifully restored 33,000 mile 1980 LHD Silver Shadow II (the last year of the Silver Shadow series).

The project of the day was demonstrating the removal of the speedometer for repairs to either the speedometer or the odometer. Ronny deftly removed the wooden veneer lower

dash board, made sure the battery was turned off and then slowly removed each of the electronic leads on the back side of the sealed speedometer box.

If the PMC owner is comfortable with emulating the viewed removal process (video graphed by Steve Pow-er-Fardy and posted on our website), the speedometer should be sent to a professional specialist for actual re-pairs and should NOT be attempted by the PMC owner.

Ronny then astutely replaced the speedometer, turned the battery back on to check the turning lights and returned the dashboard to its proper position. Another job well done!

The second project of the day was more challenging. Steve Power-Fardy’s 1965 RHD Silver Cloud III saloon would not start and had to be brought into Ronnys on a flatbed truck. Ronny had diagnosed the issue over the telephone before the vehicle left Steve’s garage as in all likelihood being the coil, a capacitor, or both.

After a well-orchestrated series of diagnostic steps that could only be accomplished by a seasoned professional, it was determined that even though Steve had recently replaced the coil, the new coil was not functioning properly. In addition, the capacitor, as predicted, was also in need of replacement.

The defining moment arrived and the 54-year old British motorcar coughed to life. The good news: it was running! The bad news: the choke was sticking and causing issues. After another half hour of tearing down the choke components and making them operate properly – Steve had his proper motor car back in service. Now all he had to do was figure out how to get it back home…

Member of the MonthMarch – The John Muckel Collection

By Harvey Davis

Rolls-Royce or Bentleys owned: 2017 Bentley Continental GT (FTH-61462)

I was a prior member of the So-Cal Region until 1985. I retired and moved to Europe for a couple of years and then moved back to the U.S., residing in Oregon and Santa Rosa and Alamo, California. We then joined the Northern California Region. I have restored a 1934 Rolls-Royce Roadster Park Ward, three Silver Clouds and a Silver Shadow. Now I am back in the Southern California RROC. I attended my first So-Cal meet a couple of weeks ago, where I met several wonderful members and was surprised to be named the Member of the Month.

The members who welcomed me were very gratifying and it was like old times. I am happy to be back in the club and looking forward to attending many more events.

Memberof the MonthJulie Brinkerhoff-Jacobs is the Member of the Month for the January event. Julie is the proud owner of a 2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost, which was a gift from her father as a thank you for running his company for the past twenty-five years. She has loved exotic cars for the past fifty years, since she was 13.

Julie has been a member of RROC So-Cal for the last three months and especially enjoys the social activities and being able to view awesome car collections and honor the Rolls-Royce marque.

Her love of the Rolls-Royce marque may run in the family. Her father, who is 88 years old, has owned seven Rolls-Royce motorcars in the past fifteen years and has given all but one of the cars to his children and their spouses, along with Porsches and Ferraris. Her dad has claimed his newest acquisition, a Rolls-Royce Dawn, for himself that he still enjoys driving

Welcome to the club Julie!

Should I Enter My Car in a Concours d‘Elegance?by Ronny Shaver

Greetings fellow Rolls-Royce and Bentley enthusiasts. It is that time of year again for the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club. Election time! This year I am throwing my hat in the ring to try and be elected to the National Board of Directors. I hope to help the club continue to promote our many events for members including technical seminars, social gatherings, road tours and, of course, the National Meet. Please remember to cast your ballot either electronically via the recent e-mail blast or use the paper ballot included in the most recent Flying Lady publication. Make sure to cast at least 5 but not more than 7 votes or your ballot will not be counted. Ivonne Webb of the San Diego region is also running so make sure to vote for her too. Together we can help represent the West-coast regions.

Now back to the question at hand. Many members tell me that they don’t think their car is “nice” enough to enter and be judged in a Concours event. I say hogwash! When people think of a Concours event, they usually think of elite events like Pebble Beach or Amelia Island so I understand their feelings. Remember that not every event is judged to such a level of detail as these are. Another thing to remember is that car will be judged against the other cars in your particular class. So, it depends on how many cars show up that particular day and also their level of restoration or condition.

Judges are taught to follow a list of categories including: exterior fit and finish, interior condition, engine compartment cleanliness and finish, trunk condition and overall look of car. In each category are individual items checked for condition. When a certain item is found lacking, points are deducted and then totaled at the end. Each car starts with a perfect score, but loses points during the process of judging. I have yet to judge a perfect car. The process is meant to be fair to all participants and hopefully make the total experience a good one. Every event I have participated in has a goal of promoting the preservation and enjoyment of these precious vehicles. Fun is the key word. What is the point of having your pride and joy stay under a cover in a garage? Take it out, show it off, and participate in the fun of people appreciating your car while fostering dreams of one day having one of their own.

During my judging duties I have found that the area where most points are deducted is cleanliness. I have had the owners open the hood of their cars, only to see a filthy engine compartment that had not even been touched with a towel. Another area neglected is the door jamb area. The door

jamb is the area you see when the door is opened. It is usually painted with rubber and stainless trim. Few people take the time to make this area look as good as the exterior of the car.

The key words to remember are fit, function and finish. Fit means how well do parts fit on your car. Crooked trim and moldings, poorly fitting doors, shrunken leather, sagging headliner….. Function means that certain areas are checked for proper function. Inoperative exterior lights, gauges, difficult to start engines, leaking hoses under the hood….. Finish means cleanliness and appearance. Taking the time to make sure everything visible is in its proper place, lights are functioning, hoses are not leaking, cleaning all areas to the cleanest condition possible and making everything shine as best as possible will help prevent the loss of precious judging points. Remember that every car starts with a perfect score!

Concours events are also tremendous opportunities for participants to meet other enthusiasts and to expand their knowledge of the cars. Many life-long friends have been made by sharing an afternoon with new acquaintances who love their cars. These events help promote appreciation for our PMCs. After all, not many brands have been able to use “Best Car in the World” in their advertising campaigns.

Remember to mark your calendar for April 6, 2019. I will be hosting a technical seminar about preparing your car for a Concours event. Sample judging sheets will be provided so participants can use them as checklists for preparing their cars. I invite any member who is interested in having their car pre-judged to bring their cars. This is great way to highlight areas in order to save points on the day of an event.Club member Paul Katson will be assisting me by sharing important tricks and products to use and more importantly, ones not to use, when preparing a car for a Concours event. Paul is a college level instructor for auto technician programs that include paint restoration and care.

The event will be held at Ronny’s Garage, 1111 W. 1st St, Santa Ana, CA 92703. Start time will be 10:00 a.m. The event is free and will include donuts, coffee and water. I hope to see you there!

Thank you for the questions and keep them coming. Please send your questions to Ronny at [email protected]. Happy Motoring!Ronny
