Interests and Teaching Specialization

I teach classes in web design and development, UX/UI design, graphic design, creative programming, video editing, motion design for beginners to advanced students on various educational levels - from continuing education to graduate students. Lecture topics include: the ever changing role the Internet plays in our society, general to advanced interactive design concepts including CSS and HTML design, graphic design techniques, programming languages including HTML5/CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, P5, Angular JS. React JS, PHP, Scalable Vector Graphics, Canvas, working with content management systems such as Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, and Expression Engine. Animation techniques using Adobe After Effects and Animate, physical computing, interactive design aesthetics, video editing, motion graphics, and mobile content/app development, 3D modeling/printing and design techniques. Historically, I have taught mostly on-site courses, but more recently I am teaching an even split between on site and online courses using Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle as the course management platform. I often integrate online components into my onsite courses. My current research and curricular interests are in the areas of Virtual and Augmented reality technology - specifically Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Microsoft HoloLens and how they integrate into entertainment, education, and other specialized areas; art and design in the age of the Internet.

SCHOLASTIC ART AND WRITING AWARDSJANUARY 2018With two other judges, adjudicated 50 video game submissions created by students. Each submission included a playable game file, a text statement about the game, and a video of the game play. Assign awards to the works based on our three criteria: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

SCHOLASTIC ART AND WRITING AWARDS EVENT"VIDEO GAME DESIGN JAM"NOVEMBER 2017I taught a two day video game workshop to students in grades 7-12. The two day workshop focused on using the Scratch platform developed at MIT to teach students with little or no experience how to create a video game. The range of games students created was vast; one 7th grader built a motion reactive game for her friend with cerebral palsy. All the students showcased their games to friends, families, and each other at the reception at the conclusion of the workshop.

PRATT INSTITUTE"GAME DESIGN AND INTERACTIVE MEDIA" CURRICULUM COMMITTEEFALL 2015 - FALL 2017Served on committee charged with creating a program in Game Design for the Associate Degree program. Committee responsible for designing all curriculum. I personally authored 12 syllabi for courses in the program. Currently, I've taught two of the provisional courses which I designed for the program "Mobile Game Design" and taught "Object Oriented Programming" in the Spring 2017 semester, and in Fall 2017, I also taught a course entitled "Serious and Subversive Games" which involved designing games outside of the entertainment industry. This degree program was approved by New York State in November 2016 and successfully launched in Fall 2017.

PRATT INSTITUTERiDE - "Risk/Dare/Experiment" GRANT AWARDFALL 2016Awarded grant from Provosts office entitled "Bringing Virtual and Augmented Reality Technology to Curriculum". The goal of the grant is to explore how to effectively integrate virtual and augmented reality technology into the educational process at Pratt Institute in both the classroom and studio. It involves exploring with various faculty how to use VR & AR tools in drawing and painting curriculum as well as offering introductory workshops for graduate students in information science. Grant value: $1500

PRATT INSTITUTE CURRICULUM REVIEW COMMITTEEFALL 2015 Charged with reviewing current Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) degree curriculum and converting from a mixed credit model (2 & 3 credit class) to a pure 3 credit model.

PRATT INSTITUTEMS-LIS STAKEHOLDER GROUP FALL 2015Group is charged with providing feedback on drafts of documents, such as the Plan for the Self Study are in the process of being written by School of Information full-time faculty and the Dean to be presented to the American Library Association during the re-accreditation process. Met with ALA External Review Panel as part of re-accreditation visit to discuss use of technology in the MLS program.

PRATT INSTITUTE PEER REVIEW COMMITTEE FALL 2014 - SPRING 2015 Committee reviewed applications and portfolios of faculty seeking change in status or promotion. Visited classes to perform classroom observations. Committee passed along recommendations to department chair. Served on Committee two consecutive years.

ST. OLAF COLLEGE HOWARD & EDNA HONG KIERKEGAARD LIBRARY RESEARCH FELLOWSUMMER 1996 Granted a summer research in residence fellowship. Research focused on the similarities between philosophies of William James and Søren Kierkegaard. Fellowship paid full housing costs, a monthly stipend, and gave full access to all library resources.

NEW YORK TIMES NEWSPAPERCIRCUIT SECTION - "LETTER TO EDITOR" PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 24th, 1998 Responded to article called “Cutting the Cord” story which addressed the trend in people having a cordless phone as their only phone and how this “cutting” into the need for new fiber “land lines”.
