Existing on the site was an 8 story parking garage. Based on the development of the nearby Transbay Terminal Hosting 11 modes of mass transportation and 40+ million users per year, the infrastructural structure will become obsolete. Human nature has often been to tear down and build new, but rather than view the structure as a relic, it was instead taken as an armature with inherent good properties. It can evolve past its original use as "parking structure" and this case become "cultural institution." A music hall and various amenities

with properties such as a continuous circulation system and a rigid structural framework that can be pugged into and subtracted from, the formant structure was viewed simply as a street elevated into the air. as a dead end, it lay unused. by programming a music hall into the highest level, the interstitial levels in between become activated.

to successfully program the existing structure, the supporting spaces of a music hall are extrapolated along the continuous ramp system. logical agencies are given vertical relationships. through this, strategy, several program blocks were developed therein grouping like an even distribution of different programs, and the vertical block, allowing instances such as commercial spaces to be accessed simultaneously without requiring the user to traverse the entire structure in order to enter the next store.

Page 9: David O'Brien Portfolio

a daylighting study using the adjacent buildings and different times of year allowed an open air atrium space to be cored from the center of the structure. this allows natural daylighting throughout the typically dark structure, and creates visual connections from the ground level up, encouraging a continued engagement. the columns and beams are allowed to remain in place to ensure structural integrity while adding to the experiential quality of the space.

Page 10: David O'Brien Portfolio

the program blocks provide an opportunity for the structure to have a 24 hour life cycle. while a music hall has the ability to attract upwards of 1000 people on any given night, performances are not constant. by extrapolating the supporting programs, they are given opportunities to operate on their own.

back of housea porte-cochere connects the ground level to the adjacent embarcadero highway system. large vehicles can park overnight, accommodating large scale visiting acts. the back of house adjacencies are connected by a large service elevator that privatizes the arrival and departure of the artist while making connection to production services, backstage, green rooms, and practice spaces convenient.

an innovative objects museum, like all museums, requires an audience. columbus’ tourism relies on a relatively niche audience, and therefore to create a viable experience for people, it must vary regulary, as the most common visitor in a small town will be the repeat visitor. seeking to create a display which varies on daily basis, this museum also intervenes upon the urban environment to affect the city externally in the same way its program operates internally.

the museum is designed to host multiple artists in residence. by hosting people who will actually create their work on site, the visitor gains access to daily changes. the process of production becomes as important as the product itself. the act of creation, installation, and manufacture are a part of the exhibit and possess in themselves a natural evolution that the building can equally evolve with. work shop spaces are connected to gallery spaces allowing use and handling of dangerous materials in safe areas while creating immediate access to display areas. the separation of space becomes blurred as users can be at once amidst a workshop as well as a display space. the event galleries can open and close, their shading system acting as signifier to the community indicating type and scale of event.

columbus’ exisitng plazas and urban areas make it a very apt host to community events. this museum seeks to connect these spaces by providing a centrally located structure that can be host as pavilion, facilitator through exhibits and activities, and civic amenity through collections, libraries and classes.

Residential Autonomy/03

this residential project located in the historic cast iron district sought to answer the question of home and ownership in a densely populated urban environment. here, the monotonous nature of “neighborhoods” removes a sense of identity for the individual. a thorough examination and comparison of site in soho helped determine the most ideal location to yield access to amenities, recognition of home, and seclusion from inherent unwanted stimulation in urban environments. design strategies derived from a translation of the individualized home common to suburban neighborhoods into the urban residential tower.

to achieve a sense of ownership in the occupant, multiple strategies were implemented. the units are multi-storied in order to weight one side of the building with all of the housing. this allowed for a broad “street-like”internal entrance that instigates visual recognition of the home to occur both externally and internally from a great distance. the internal street was then divided into two stacked atriums, reducing the level of pedestrian activity by 50% and catering to a transition into privacy. the remaining facade is occupied by garden spaces that act as visual relief fro the urban environment, and can be accessed literally and visually from each home.

photo essays of the black family heritage farm highlight present qualities of isolation that provoke self reflection. the subtle play of materials as they act upon each other, such as water on metal and its apparent decay dictate the engagement, though imperceivable, is as potent a stimulant at any scale. through reduction of variables, and in the spirit of the meticulous agricultural machine see now a new machine tuned to evoke introspection and reflection.

My Ears Are Ringing/05

developed for the portland based alternative rock band sama dams, this music video accompanies the lead track “my ears are ringing” from their sophmore album. a mutual collaboration took place when the band was looking for video opportunities to embellish their upcoming october release, and i was looking for an original musical score to go with my own foray into digital animation. my process involved character development, staging, story boarding, 3d model construction, lighting, rendering and final production editing.

a study through water colors into the apparent relation of former religious deities to current theistic heroes, particularly in the catholic church. vast similarties between greek religion, the roman empire and present day catholicism place figures such as st. peter in the early stages of herculean legacy. through the tholos temple to bramante’s tempietto, figures are reborn as fact, remaining myth only to the names of culture’s most recent abandon.

a short western film based on the concept that all westerns rely on two qualities: vengeance and one very quotable line. with this in mind, i determined to tell the entire story in about five minutes. though the dialogue never made it into the film, turning the project more into an art piece and music video, some day the hidden audio files will reveal the protagonist’s line: “i’m looking at a body three holes shy of a dead man.”

an exercise in creativity. through tradition such as the elegant corpse and the contemporary “marvel method” this graphic novel is illustrated first without script or words. the visual story is then given to the writer, who must create a script from his own interpretation. it is an ongoing collaboration and experiment.

Received Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. DATUM STUDENT JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURE:This publication is produced solely by students at Iowa State University. By interviewing lecturers, promoting an architectural discourse through various online social medias as well as weekly meetings, I contributed both design work and written materials to this publication. Also, fundraising efforts are undertaken in order to publish a printed edition every school year.

DATUM STUDENT JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURE:As President, responsibilities on the ensuing yearly publication were increased. I planned meetings, organized discussions, edited written pieces, provided graphic design, project design, and written work to the publication.
