David Swenson Ashtanga YogaAthens, May 16 - May 28, 2017
We are happy to announce the hosting of David in Athens! Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to meet one of only a handful of Westerners to have learned the full Ashtanga system including all of the asana sequences and pranayama as originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. Deepen your practice, and also live an experience that will travel you to the origins of Ashtanga Yoga!
Who is David“Ashtanga Yoga is an incredible tool that seeks to balance our strength with
flexibility and to bring about a sense of wellbeing on an emotional and mental
level. A steady and regulated practice over a long period of time is the catalyst
to these changes. We must be patient and listen to our body and progress at our
own pace. By focusing on the breath and moving with awareness then our yoga
body/mind grows like a tree. It requires steadfast care and watering through the
avenue of conscious and
diligent practice.”
David began his journey of Yoga in 1969 when he and his
brother Doug practiced in a small park at the end of their street
in Houston, Texas. There were few sources for yoga at that time
so they practiced from whatever books they could find. In 1973
David discovered Ashtanga after he met David Williams and
Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, CA. In 1975 David and Nancy brought K.
Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. He
then initiated studies directly with the master. He made his first trip to Mysore in 1977. David
is one of only a handful of Westerners to have learned the full Ashtanga system including all
of the asana sequences and pranayama as originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. Today David is
recognized as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. He
tirelessly travels year round to teach and offer workshops. His courses are presented in a
supportive and compassionate manner making it accessible to all levels of practitioners to
participate.
Thirteen days full of Ashtanga practicePractitioners will have the opportunity to practice, learn, and deepen their practice in a versatile type of three different
events : Mysore Practice, Weekend Workshop and First Series Teacher Training. Each and everyone is unique, and
can provide different knowledge and feedback to the practitioner. Participating in all three gives the best experience
regarding the whole system.
Mysore Practice
A few years ago I had the opportunity to participate in a Mysore style class with David. In the traditional Mysore style
class students quietly flow through their Ashtanga sequences while the teacher provides personal attention and care
where needed. It is very important not to interfere too much because the student may lose his concentration. It was
fascinating how aware of the entire room he was, assisting everyone if and when it was necessary giving personal
assistance and compassionate insights to the practitioners. With his experience in the practice, he can provide refined
adjustments, and with his simplicity he can efficiently assist practitioners of every level.
Weekend Workshop
When I first met David I was in a weekend workshop. Registering
for the event back then, I thought that three days could not be
enough, but I was wrong. Looking at my notes after the event, I
was surprised to find that I had covered over half of my notebook.
As his student, I participated four times in weekend workshops,
learning each time something new in the upcoming years. The
event is designed to cover the fundamentals of the Ashtanga
practice, Flying Floating and Hand standing, a Led First Series
Class, Yoga philosophy and applications to our daily life and many
more. I would definitely participate in the event again and again, with the same enthusiasm like that very first time!
Teacher Training
The essence of the Ashtanga practice wrapped up in a 40 hour Teacher Training course. This course is designed as an
intensive immersion into the teaching techniques of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Participants will gain great
insights and depth of knowledge as to how to share the practice of Ashtanga Yoga with all levels of students in a safe
and effective manner. Once again, David shares enormous and quality information, not only on the physical aspect of
the practice in the asanas, alignment and adjustment techniques
but also on underlying concepts that help the practitioner balance
on an emotional and mental state. David always brings joy in the
room, creating the appropriate environment for values to blossom
like compassion, determination, truthfulness, friendship and many
more. A unique opportunity to deepen and explore the magic of
Ashtanga practice.
