ROYAL WORCESTERA RICH HERITAGE
Artist’s impression and photograph of the original Royal Worcester porcelain factory. Photographs of Harry Davis and porcelain works courtesy of the Museum of Royal Worcester Porcelain.
Before the 18th Century, porcelain was only produced in the Far East and had proved a very mysterious material for European potters for many years. Around 1750, apothecary William Davis and Dr John Wall were experimenting and discovered a method of producing a porcelain type material. They persuaded a group of local businessmen to invest in their discovery and so a new factory was founded in Worcester. First known as The Worcester Tonquin Manufactory, the original factory deeds can still be seen in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain. The Museum also houses the world’s largest collection of Worcester porcelain.
Today Berkeley has breathed life back into this historic site, transforming it into a bustling community once more. The development is the perfect mix of original buildings that have been lovingly restored into stylish apartments, alongside newly built homes, many enjoying picturesque views over the river and canal.
The Royal Worcester Porcelain Works was established in the city in 1751. Royal Worcester porcelain quickly became extremely popular, especially for the new fashion of tea drinking, and the porcelain factory acquired many high profile customers who invested vast sums on ceramics.
Born in 1885, Harry Davis followed the family tradition to work at Royal Worcester, where his father was a china-figure maker and his grandfather one of its finest gilders. Displaying his own natural drawing and painting abilities and an eagerness to learn, he was soon recognised as a young man who could capture light and intricate detail whether on scenes of misty landscapes, snowy arctic panoramas, palaces and gardens, castles or cottages.
Returning from the First World War, Harry worked on many prestigious commissions, from Indian Maharajas to Sir Winston Churchill. A painted equestrian model of Princess Elizabeth - later Queen Elizabeth II - so impressed her that he was recognised in her first Honours list for his contribution to craftsmanship and to Royal Worcester’s success. During the Second World War his painted fine china exported to America had earned valuable dollars, while his dinner-set designs were produced for decades - ‘Imperial’ for 76 years. Today, Harry’s signature still stands for exceptional quality.
