Remodeling a closet floor with floor tiles:1. My original closet was 2ft by 2 ft. I had to put down floor tiles and add trim around the edge of the floor. How much trim did I need to buy? 8ftHow many 1 square foot floor tiles did I need to buy?12
2. I decided to expand my closet and double its size. Trim needed? 16 ftNumber of floor tiles? 16.
Notice that by doubling the size of my closet, I simply needed to buy double the amount of trim. (Perimeter was just doubled, too). Perimeter: Simply multiply by your scale factor to find your new perimeter.
But, the number of floor tiles (area) I needed to purchased was NOT just doubled. It was 4 times as many. This is because both the length and width were doubled, and then those doubled numbers were multiplied. Area: Multiply by your scale factor TWICE to find your new area.

Area is two dimensional, so both dimensions are impacted by the scale factor. Multiply by the scale factor twice to find the new area.

You had to flip the 3/5 scale factor to make it 5/3 because they wanted you to enlarge the smaller frame. Area: multiply by the scale factor twice.
