Day 6 - Feet Washing, Softball, Farewell Thursday, June 15, 2017 Our last day onsite has arrived. We are sad to go, but we had a fun day with the community before leaving! Quick recap on Movie Night: after dinner on Wednesday, we headed back to the community to watch "God's Not Dead 2" with the kids. We brought a projector that we setup in an open area next to the library, and the community leaders setup chairs for both us and the kids to sit in. Most of us had 1-2 kids on our lap while leaders passed out bags of popcorn, then we watched the movie until about 9 p.m. (we had a few cute sleepers by the end!). As for Thursday, we started the day as usual - devotions at 7:15 a.m. followed by breakfast. Bonnie and Pat led us again in devotionals focusing on leaning not on ourselves, but in trusting that God will put you on the correct path. We made it to El Almirante around 9 a.m. where we started setup in the church for feet washing. We laid out 10 feet washing stations that we would take turns using, while others helped with additional tasks, such as bringing in clean water and keeping the floors dry. The kids started off receiving a lesson about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, then filed into the stations where we proceeded to wash their feet. We asked them their names (in Spanish) and reminded them of God's love. We were able to wash the feet of about 70 kids by the end of the morning! After cleaning the church, we left for the Hands of Hope office for lunch. Our last home-cooked lunch meal consisted of pasta, quinoa, fresh mango and pineapple, salad, and chick peas. We ended the lunch with a few games and a cake to thank our hosts for accommodating our group for lunch each day. We headed back to El Almirante after lunch, mentally preparing to defend our baseball title from last year. When we arrived, the community was already setup for the game - including many people on the outskirts of the field ready to watch and cheer on their team! For those of us who didn't play, we enjoyed our last afternoon with the kids - braiding hair, blowing bubbles, and playing "Sapo Sapito". Following the baseball game, we walked back towards the library area for the farewell ceremony. We had members of the community thank us for coming, as well as had children talk to us about how their sponsors have changed their lives for the better. It was very moving to hear, a few of us got teary-eyed listening and thinking about our impending departure. The ceremony wrapped up with a dance from one of the local girls, as well as a prayer from El Almirante's pastor, Pastor Luis. Slowly we made it back to the bus, saying our goodbyes and hugging all the kids who made a difference in our week here. Many tears, smiles, and hugs later, we all made it on the bus to head back to our hotel. We ended the day with devotionals and dinner - Jamie and Sandi led us in a devotional, reading the story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples, followed by us all washing each other's feet (smelly or not :)). We are sad that our week with El Almirante has ended, but we are excited to come home, share our stories, and start planning for next year! Tomorrow is our free day, where we plan to go to the beach and the local market for some souvenirs. Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him and he will make your path straight.
