All Saints Day is a Christian holy dayhonoring people who have died.
Halloween is the evening before All Saints Day. Costumes and
trick-or-treating are folk customs.
Spooky Saturday is a party withHalloween themed activities and fun.
It is held at our school.
At Parish it is a tradition to learn about Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday honoring
loved ones who have died.
Dia de los Muertos
Day of the Dead:
A Celebration of Life and Death
In Mexico
Oaxaca is a state and a city in Mexico.
People have lived in Oaxaca for a long,
long time. There are many old traditions.
Spanish settlers brought other traditions.
In October everyone gets ready for
Dia de los Muertos, a holiday tradition for honoring people who have died.
Special treats and toys
are sold in the markets.
Marigolds brighten every home and business.
Skeleton decorations are meant
to be funny, not scary.
Ofrendas are set up in homes to honor loved ones who have died.
Flowers, fruit, photos, and the Christ child are symbols of life, death, and
life after death.
In cemeteries, flowers and candles make the graves beautiful.
Families gather to visit and remember their loved ones.
In Mexico, children learn about our Halloween while we learn about their
Day of the Dead!
Enjoy all your cultural celebrations, and take a moment to remember
those who came before us!
