Genesis of DBI in Madhyam…Feb,2008:Madhyam started a three year integrated livelihoods project in 20 villages located inside highly inaccessible reserve forest area of Ranapur block of Nayagarh district , Odisha under support from SDTT, Mumbai
September,2008…
Madhyam, invited by SDTT, attended a consultation of NGOs to explore potential of launching DBI project in Odisha Madhyam submitted a proposal for 3 DBI structures in Ranpur block Madhyam was sanctioned Rs.13.58 Lacks for a period of 1 year (March’2010 to May’2011) Technical support was provided by DBI secretariat to assess the feasibility and to design the structure.
Outputs…
Other than house hold use, a total of 78.8 acres of agricultural land in 3 villages (25 acres in Jaripada,36 acres in Sanatulubi & 17.8 acres in Tikirai pada) came under irrigation due to the DBI structures.
Crops like Sun flower, mustard & vegetables (Cauliflower, Radish, greens, beans, cucurbits, tomato, brinjal & chilly) were grown with DBIs water.

Difficulties faced …
• Inaccessibility of project villages – road and telecommunication restricted
• Wild animals depend on water structures for drinking purpose, often damage the pipes (Elephants and wild buffalos)
• Being the intake well are located inside reserve forest area, construction works are restricted.
Process followed…
• Adopted local mode of transportation of construction materials• Protection of intake well, open pipes
and outlet taps by user community• Periodical cleaning of intake
structure by user community
Leveraging for DBI ; scope…• Earthwork for pipe laying
under MGNREGA• Sanitation under sanitation
program for safe disposal of excess/used water
• Integrating DBI with govt. agri-horticultural programs under different schemes
• Integrating DBI with programs by other donors
Suggestions for quality improvement…
• Measures for strengthening the protection wall in the periphery of intake well
• Periodical treatment of command area and de-silting measures• Provision of concrete platform with drainage at outlet points• Concrete cover of all outlet points, where ever not made• Mobilizing community for periodical cleaning of the intake structure and
treatment of water• Developing volunteers from among the user community and train them
on repair and maintenance of the structures• Sensitizing community on judicious use of water and safe disposal• Provisioning tools and implements to each community for
repair/maintenance of DBI structures• Converging DBI with agri-horticultural program to bring a continuity in
the program
