Medline) to journal or magazine articles, containing
citations, abstracts and often either the full text of the
articles indexed, or links to the full text.
Why have scientific database???• Improvement of data quality
– multiple users provides multiple opportunities for
detecting and correcting problems in data.
• Cost
– data costs less to save than to collect again
– with environmental data, often data cannot be collected
again at any cost.
• Long Term
– long-term studies depend on databases to retain project
history
• Synthesis
– use of data for a purpose other than which it was
collected
Tools for Creating
Scientific Databases
• Web Server – HTML, XML
– Apache – open source
• Database Management Systems (DBMS)
– Input, query, update, sort, output
• Statistical Packages
– Aggregate, graph
• Programming Languages
– C++, JAVA, Python, Visual Basic, PHP
Requirements
• The data it contains must be wanted by a group
of users.
• Data must also be up to date and complete.
• must be presented in an attractive format to the
user.
• The technological needed to use the system
must be compatible with the users.
Forensic Database• A DNA database or DNA databank is a database of
DNA data.
• A DNA database can be used in the analysis of genetic diseases, genetic fingerprinting for criminology, or genetic genealogy.
•
• DNA databases may be public or private.
• DNA fingerprints or DNA profiles are made from the DNA and these are held electronically in the DNA database
