Mums praise hospital maternity care in national surveyLocal mums have praised the Trust’s maternity services in an annual survey undertaken to gain an insight into women’s’ experiences of maternity services across England.

Scoring significantly better than the national average, the poll, created by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) was sent out in June of this year to 347 mothers who had used maternity services at DRI and Bassetlaw Hospital. Asking parents about their experiences of antenatal care, labour and birth, as well as postnatal care, the organisation performed excellently.

The results show the Trust as scoring better than the national average with 91% of DBTH mums saying that midwives listened to them during their antenatal check-ups, with 93% confirming their partner was encouraged to be involved in their care throughout. Local mum, Charlie Spink, who gave birth to daughter Elsie on Monday 22 January 2018, said: “Thank you to the amazing midwifes who supported me throughout my labour. The compassion and encouragement I received helped me to get through my labour and making the whole experience so much better.” Each year, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals delivery around 5,000 babies, with the service continually looking for ways to develop and improve for expectant mums and dads.

Please park respectfullyIf you park in residential areas around our hospital sites, please remember to be respectful of those who live there. Make sure not to block access to any driveways or cause obstructions in the road.

Doncaster Social PrescribingSocial prescribing is on the increase throughout England. It is a project that gives healthcare professionals in Doncaster the option to prescribe non-medical support to patients for non-medical conditions such as loneliness, housing or advice on debt.

Social Prescribing Advisors visit patients who are referred at their home and assess their individual needs and put them in touch with local services and community groups that can help them. By providing this support it has been proven to reduce unnecessary GP appointments and hospital admissions. Between August 2015 and July 2016 the service received more than a thousand referrals and enabled over 600 people to access support in their local community. During this period almost half of the service’s clients demonstrated an improvement in their health related quality of life in the period following their referral to the service, in particular there were significant improvements for clients who presented with anxiety and depression.

Referrals are made via GPs, pharmacists or community nurses. To contact the service call 01302 730401 or email [email protected] For referral emails or other confidential information that needs to be sent securely please email [email protected]

Friday Lunchtime LectureThe Friday Lunchtime Lecture on 2 February will take place in the Lecture Theatre, Education Centre, DRI and will be transmitted to the Kilton Room at Bassetlaw and the Boardroom at Montagu Topic: Are strong opioids dangerous?Speakers: Lee Wilson, Consultant Pharmacist and Helen Meynell, Consultant Pharmacist

Overview: This session will provide a short insight into the potential uses and misuses of strong opioids. We will consider national guidance and initiatives, trends in prescribing practice and the supporting evidence for this.

We will also include real life examples found here in the Trust where near misses occurred and some of the common areas for error. A sponsored lunch will be served at 12.30pm and the lecture will start at 1.00pm.

Qii: Focusing your aim

Ideas:The team had a lot of ideas to try, which they are doing in stages so they know which has had the most impact. The team already collect the numbers of patients not brought to clinic which can easily be turned into a monthly run chart so that they have time series data to help them measure their improvement. Testing: The first test of change or PDSA (Plan Do Study Act) cycle they are trying is contacting parents/carers to confirm if they are planning for their child to attend their clinic appointment. If not they are re-booked and the slot offered to another patient. They are running this trial for a few months and then evaluating the results. Two nurses are also calling families of children who haven’t been brought to clinic multiple times and are collecting data on this as well. One element of the project is trying to understand why the patient doesn’t attend. They are engaging with parents/carers during the call to ask why they aren’t able to attend the appointment. They are hoping this will enable them to find a common theme they could address as another test of change.

For more information, or for support and guidance, please contact the Qii Team on 642072/642079.

Take a look at the Qii Toolkit for lots of useful resources: http://intranet/new_developments/qii.aspx

What are we trying to accomplish?

How will we know a change is an

improvement?

What changes can we make to

improve?

Act

Study

Plan

Do

If you were to tweet your Qii project in 140 characters how would you explain it?

In order to define your project you need to focus on what you want to improve. Thinking how you would tweet about it or having a short corridor conversation with another member of the team helps you to frame what exactly it is you are working on to improve. This may be one element of a wider goal, breaking the overall goal down into more manageable pieces makes it easier to achieve and measure improvement.

The model for improvement can also help you to focus on your aim by asking yourself and your team the initial three questions:

1. We want to reduce the numbers of patients not brought to their appointment across both sites in paediatric eye clinic

2. Rates of patients not brought to clinics will reduce

3. First test is to call patient’s families a two days before clinic to determine if they will be attending and rebook if unable to attend

You need to know what you want to improve and by when so the project doesn’t drift. Paediatric eye clinic are focusing on reducing their numbers of patients not brought to clinic at both DRI and BH which currently run at over 20%. Their aim is to incrementally reduce rates to a more acceptable level by trying different change ideas for a couple of months and constantly measuring the results.

PREVENT - Help us achieve 85%Prevent is within the NHS contract and NHS England have given Prevent the highest priority. They have set a training compliance target of 85% for NHS staff to achieve the appropriate level of training by March 2018. This is to be monitored by the CCG.

As a Trust we are currently at 66% compliance, which is great so far, but obviously we are aiming for full compliance. You can attain compliance by:

• Booking onto the existing planned training sessions via the Education Department before March.• Access eLearning on the Intranet (NHS England have authorised that staff can complete the Mental Health eLearning session until the general one is available). Remember to send your proof of learning to the education department to update your record! • Do you have a meeting or any other group event where there will be a number of staff present? If so we can come and deliver the session assuming the numbers are greater than 10. Please contact the Safeguarding Team 642437 to arrange.• Have you already completed the training at another health organisation? If so please contact the training department and validate your previous training.

Please contact the safeguarding team for any help or advice 01302 642437.

Don’t worry if you don’t see your bonus stamps on there right away they will appear by Thursday 7 February. If you have any issues or questions regarding catering, please contact [email protected] (ensuring you also CC in [email protected]) so this feedback can be formally collected and improvements made as a result.

Outpatients introduce IntouchThe majority of Outpatient areas are now using Intouch for tracking patients through their clinic visit.

Helen Allison, who is a Super user from South Block, has been using the System for a while. Hellen and colleagues have noted many benefits:

• A clear view of patients in time order• Easy to see when patients are running late• Length of time a patient has been waiting in clinic• When a patient has been seen and left clinic• Handover of clinics when staff come on shift midway through a clinic• Specific icons display when patients have an impairment, for example hearing and sight • Can see other clinics running in the Trust.

"Intouch patient flow went live on 12 December and after a week of uncertainty and getting used to a different way of working I have to say that now it has become second nature to all my staff to log in and use and is working well."

Sister Sharon Woodward, Montagu Outpatients

The remaining Outpatient areas in the Trust will go-live with Patient Flow in the near future. The equipment has been ordered and will be installed soon. For further information please contact Jo Hutchinson, Project Manager, on 644258 or Email: [email protected]

Call for research grant applications in nursingThe nursing research grant call has just been launched by the General Nursing Council Trust (GNCT).

All nurses interested in undertaking research about using evidence to improve patient outcomes can apply for a grant of up to £30,000 before the closing date of 17 April 2018.

This is a great opportunity to support nurse-led research within your clinical area. The Research & Development department can support you with your application and help with academic links, if required. More information can be found on the GNCT website http://www.gnct.org.uk/grants. Please disseminate this info to any colleagues who may be interested and contact Julie Bury, Research Fellow [email protected], for any further information/support.

I would like to thank the staff on ward 17. Particularly the staff on shift on nights 14 and 15 Jan (nurse called kay and another nurse with blond hair) they were fantistic with me and the other ladies in this room. Also laura from the day shift on the 15 and 16 of that month.

I would also like to say the free Wifi was brilliant. It meant i could talk to my little boy and watch television which made the stay easier.

The speed in which we were processed through A&E was brilliant always kept in the picture of what’s happening!

On G5, we were seen immediately by the doctor and provided everything we needed. Everything was explained fully and what options we had clearly explained.

Our doctor was Laura Whaldon and our nurses Kylie & Pam. They made a traumatic experience less painful.

Thank you #TeamDBTH

Receipting

The Finance Department is currently experiencing a high number of invoices arriving that cannot be matched to an order as the receipt element is missing.

It is the requisitioner’s responsibility to receipt goods delivered directly to departments (not from Central Stores) and services (including NHS to NHS). Unless the receipting is performed, the invoice cannot match and the supplier cannot receive payment.

Therefore, it is extremely important that you perform the receipting function in a timely manner. What may be helpful is for you to receipt as soon as you have received the service rather than wait for the invoice to arrive. If you are relying on the invoice, then receipt as soon as you get a notification to do so. Remember to always quote the invoice number as the packing slip number, so that the purchase order can be reconciled, especially if there is more than one invoice per purchase order (blanket orders).

By carrying out the receipting quickly it will also reduce the number of SBS notifications that you receive. If you require any advice or further help, please email [email protected] or call ext. 642380

Further guidance for receipting can be found on the Intranet here.
