descriptionThe Interpoint™ SMFL Series™ 28-volt DC/DC converters
are rated p to 65 watts otpt power over a -55° to +125°C
temperatre rane with a 28 VDC nominal inpt. On dal otptmodels p to 70% of the rated otpt power can be drawn from
either the positive or neative otpts. Crrent sharin allowsthe nits to be paralleled for total power of p to 185 watts. The
welded, hermetically sealed packae is only 3.0 1.5 0.40
inches, ivin the series an overall power density of p to 43
watts per cbic inch.
Screening
SMFL converters, also available on SMD drawins, offer the
followin screenin options: Space Prototype (O), Class H, or
Class K. Radiation tolerant to Radiation Hardness Assrance(RHA) levels of “-” (O), “P,” or “R,” per MIL-PRF-38534. Interpoint
model nmbers se an “O” in the RHA desinator position toindicate the “-” (dash) Radiation Hardness Assrance level of
MIL-PRF-38534, which is defined as “no RHA”. See ScreeninTables 1 and 2
DeSign FeatureS
SMFL Series converters are switchin relators that se aqasi-sqare wave, sinle ended forward converter desin with a
constant switchin freqency of 600 kHz typical.
Isolation between inpt and otpt circits is provided with a
transformer in the forward path and a wide bandwidth maneticcoplin in the feedback control loop. The SMFL ses a niqe
dal loop feedback techniqe that controls otpt crrent withan inner feedback loop and an otpt voltae with a cascaded
voltae mode feedback loop. The additional secondary crrent
mode feedback loop improves transient response in a manner
similar to primary crrent mode control and allows for ease ofparallelin, bt withot the cost and compleity.
The constant freqency, plse-width modlated converters se
a qasi-sqare wave sinle-ended forward desin. Tiht load
relation is achieved throh a wide-bandwidth manetic feed-back circit. The otpt voltae on sinle SMFL models can
be trimmed to a specific otpt voltae by addin an eternalresistor (see Fire 1 for resistor vales).
inhibit
The SMFL Series converters have two inhibit terminals (INH1and INH2) that can be sed to disable power conversion,
resltin in a very low qiescent inpt crrent and no enerationof switchin noise. An active low (<0.8 volts) is reqired to inhibit
the converter between INH1 (pin 4) and Inpt Common (pin
2). An active low (<0.5 volts) is reqired to inhibit the converterbetween INH2 (pin 12) and Otpt Common (pin 8).
Sync
Converters may be synced to an eternal clock (525 to 675 kHz)
or to one another by sin the sync in or ot pins. The nominalfree-rn switchin freqency is 600 kHz.
current Share anD Parallel OPeratiOn
Mltiple SMFL converters may be sed in parallel to drive acommon load (see Fire 2). Only sinle otpt models with
SENSE and SNS RTN can be sed in the share mode. In thismode of operation the load crrent is shared by two or three

SMFL converters. In crrent sharin mode, one SMFL converteris desinated as a master. The SLAVE pin (pin 11) of the master
is left nconnected and the MSTR/INH2 pin (pin 12) of the masteris connected to the SLAVE pin (pin 11) of the slave nits. The
nits desinated as slaves have the MSTR/INH2 pin (pin 12)connected to the SNS RTN pin (pin 9). Note that synchronizinthe nits toether is not reqired for crrent sharin operation.
A second slave nit may be placed in parallel with a master andslave; this reqires the TRI pin (pin 3) of the master nit to be
connected to the SNS RTN pin (pin 9). See Fire 2 for a blockdiaram of parallel connections.
When paralleled, p to 95% of the total combined power ratinsof the SMFL converters is available at the load. Overload and
short circit performance are not adversely affected drinparallel operation.
