GRAND NATIONAL ARCHERY MEETING JUNE 25 - 28 2013

During the 3 days before the National Intercounties, 7 archers from DCAS entered the GNAM for the experience plus warm up. It’s the oldest archery competition/meeting that is still going after 159 years. Shot over 3 days, starting with a Double York on the Wednesday and Thursday and finishing with a handicap Long National round on the Friday. Still shot in the traditional way of 3 arrows shot at a time with a break at 11 o’clock (not 3doz.) for sherry, tea and biscuits. Even though the weather wasn’t that good, windy on Weds, rain on Thurs, all had an enjoyable time with some very good results as follows: Zena Barker: most hits at 80yds, highest double score at 80yds, most hits overall, 2nd on handicap day. Sarah Conisbee: 3day handicap award and 1st on handicap day. Andrew Hoyle: Best gold (mens) at meeting Daniel Tompkins: Highest score at 60yds(compound) Andrew Scott: 3rd Double York Kenny Hosegood: 1st Gent on Handicap Day Also Zena and Sarah won the impressive county trophy. County Development Coordinators A little while ago I was asked (had my arm twisted) by the DCAS committee if I would take on the post of the County Development Coordinator for archery in Devon. I have had quite a lot of dealings with both Archery GB's development team as well as Active Devon, the organisation that represent the County Sports Partnership for Devon. Initially I had no particular experience in "development" that I could draw upon. I was drawn into development by my involvement in successfully applying for grants from different bodies over the last fourteen years for several different archery projects for Brixham Archers. I am still no "Oracle" but I have usually managed to find my way around. As well as finding funding I have been actively involved with creating close links many local schools and groups for the last few years. As a member of the Torbay Sports Council committee for the last two years I have managed to promote Archery to both the Torbay Council and the community at large. Brixham Archers has grown enormously over the last couple of years. Obviously this is due to a lot of team effort - that is the key to good development. If you or your club need advice about issues regarding development I will be only too pleased to try to help. I may even be able to pay you a visit if that is appropriate. If I am not able to help/assist directly, then I should be able to point you in the direction of finding suitable answers leading to a positive outcome. Most of all you/the club need to have the ambition to grow - increase participation - and secure your own futures I can be contacted on e-mail: [email protected] or by phone 01803 843097 or 07855 282 925 Malcolm Grant - Chairman/Coach-Brixham Archers County Development Coordinator for archery in Devon Sean Ellis has been appointed as County Development Coordinator for archery in Cornwall and will be introduced in the next issue of the newsletter.

Winter Postal league – New organiser - Simon Slade

Simon introduces himself...

Hi Everyone.

I am in my fifties and have worked all my life at Torridge District Council, in the Information Technology Section, yes Computers !

If you are an archer who frequented the Devon & Cornwall County and Club shoots during the 2004-2008 years, you may remember me. During that time I taxied my son Joshua around all the shoots possible and with hard work he managed to be able to shoot for the Junior County Team in 2006, 2007 & 2008.

I am an Associate Member of Kenwith Company of Archers in North Devon, yes the Windy Place, where I help with the scoring of their Open and Indoor Tournaments each year, and have surprised many with the fact that I want to photograph the score sheets a few times during the day. This is because I enter all the information into a computer and get the system to generate me the results etc.

I hope the Leagues will run as smoothly as they have under Megan, many thanks to her for all she has done.

How to dress for an Archery Tournament by Phil Gillbanks

As Judges we become increasingly frustrated at clubs that do not emphasise to new archers that there is a dress code for archery tournaments. We see at nearly all tournaments archers turning up in blue jeans, shirts with non archery related logo's and incorrect footwear. Admittedly several years ago it was easier when every archer turned up in dark green and/or white clothing. The only time that you saw other colours was when inclement weather was declared by the Senior Judge. The Archery GB Rulebook rule 307 is quite clear in what is allowed and every club should have an up to date copy. Alternatively a copy can be downloaded free from the Archery GB Website. But just in case a copy of the rule is below:- 307. Dress Regulations (a) The recognised dress of Archery GB is plain dark green and/or white. (b) Footwear that fully encloses the toes and front of the foot must be worn at all times when shooting. (c) Members of Archery GB shooting and officiating at tournaments granted UK or World Record Status by Archery GB are required to wear clothing that is appropriate, clean, in good condition (ie not frayed or worn, either deliberately or by use) and conventional in style and appearance. In particular: (i) Tops or shirts must cover the front and back of the body (including the midriff when at full draw), they must not be strapless and, for gentlemen, must include sleeves. (ii) Any colour garments may be worn with the exception of blue denim, olive drab and camouflage pattern. (iii) Badges, Logos and Wording. a. Clothing manufacturers’ trade marks are allowed. The wearer’s name is allowed. b. Individuals, and members of clubs and other archery organisations that are commercially sponsored may wear sponsors’ logos and names during the sponsorship period only. c. Other wording or badges on clothing must represent archery organisations. (iv) Members of Archery GB who are officiating as the Chairman of Judges, Judge or Director of Shooting at a UK or World Record Status tournament shall wear Archery GB recognised Judges official dress. (v) A member of Archery GB who has represented Great Britain (GBR) as an archer at an international tournament may wear their international shooting uniform for the remainder of that season and the following one. Please ensure that you comply with the dress regulations when attending tournaments. This even applies to smaller tournaments that have stated on the application form that Archery GB or GNAS dress regulations apply. We don't want to have to enforce the rules, we want the day to be enjoyable for all involved. Also, please remember that the safety for the shoot rests solely with the Judges and that all people walking on to the field after assembly must have the correct footwear. There are no exceptions.

Record Claims Reminder For anyone wanting to claim a DCAS County record, please remember that you have only four weeks from the date of the tournament to do this and three months for GWAS. GWAS Regional Record Claims should be sent via your DCAS CRO. Claim forms are available on DCAS and GWAS websites respectively and as DCAS CRO I usually carry a few blank forms to tournaments; you can also hand completed forms to me personally at any shoot I attend. All claims from outside County must be accompanied by a copy of the results sheet. Claims can be made from scores achieved at any Open Tournament, including 'Masters' claims for archers aged 50+, many of which remain as yet unclaimed, in addition to regular record claims. So come on fellow 'Masters', where are you?
