Biodiesel Research at Delhi College of Engineering

It has been very important for India toattain energy security by 2020 and energy independence by 2030 and biodiesel is oneof the most promising & sustainable routeto attain this vision. The chief rationale forbiodiesel adaptation in India is utilization of this renewable fuel in a vast variety of dieselengines and farm machinery. Better

environmental performance, greening of  wastelands and creation of new employmentopportunities - are some of the other key advantages of biodiesel.

Delhi College of Engineering, which hasmore than 65 years of dedicated services tothe nation, has emerged as a leading research institutions of India which hasbeen carried advanced level research inpropagation of petro-plants, their improvedagro-practices, development of indigenousbiodiesel production technology, design and

development of small to medium capacity biodiesel processing unit, setting up quality assurance facility of biodiesel and field trialof biodiesel in diesel engines and vehicles.

The biodiesel research has been extensively carried out at DCE by students and faculty members and different species of TBO andnon edible oil such as Mahua, Linseed, HighFFA Rice Bran Oil, Waste cooking oil

collected from the Mc Donald Restaurants,Crude Palm, Castor, Jatropha, Karanja andrecently a specie called Thumba fromRajasthan have been successfully convertedinto quality biodiesel. These fuels developedby DCE have been successfully tested indiesel engines & vehicles. The quality of these biodiesel has been ascertained as per

These batch size units are designed anddeveloped considering the rural operativeconditions and are suitable for biodieselproduction on community basis or for smallentrepreneurs. The units are not very expensive therefore presents a viable

solution for production of biodiesel for thereplacement of the costly fossils in the ruralareas.

With a view to develop biodiesel productionunits of higher capacity, the biodieselresearch group of college developed aBiodiesel processing unit of 100 Liters perbatch in 2004.

High Capacity Biodiesel Units

Delhi College of Engineering developed abiodiesel production unit capable of producing over 600 litres of biodiesel daily under MNRE Sponsored project granted tothe college. The production unit has a very innovative design and is first of its kind inIndia. 10-member team of college has takenfive months in development of this unit andit has costed around Rs.3.5 lacs. While, the

conventional design units had only one totwo vessels, the new unit have six vesselsand can produce at least 200 liters of bio-diesel as per the ASTM/BIS standards ineight hours. The patent for the uniquedesign of the production unit has already

been filed.

DCE has also commissioned a high capacity biodiesel unit which can produce around4000-5000 liters of biodiesel in a day inthree shifts of 8 hours each. This unit hasbeen developed as a part of PCRAsponsored project granted to DCE. This isthe biggest unit amongst any educationalinstitute. It has created interest in many industries and many of them are willing tocollaborate with DCE.

DCE is also excelling in development of improved agro practices of oil bearing plantsand trees. As a part of its integratedapproach, a large number of these plantsand trees are planted in the college campus.

The campus has around 500 maturedKaranja trees. Major plantation of karanja

and jatropha has taken place in collegecampus over the last many years.

The college is collecting the Karanja &jatropha seeds from its matured trees &plants and extraction of oil from the seeds iscarried in a small extraction unit. Thedifferent reactors developed at DCE areused to produce biodiesel from the oil.

The college has now developed its nursery of high yielding Jatropha saplings for itsfuture need of Jatropha saplings.

The vision of the college is to produce10,000 liters of biodiesel from its ownresources by 2009-10 & this biodiesel would
