1 GENERAL SETUP INFORMATION 1.1.1 iPod® and iPhone® compatibility The Vivaldi Upsampler is compatible with the iPod and iPhone models illustrated below.

Made for:

“Made for iPod” and “Made for iPhone” mean that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to iPod or iPhone respectively and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards. Apple is not responsible for the operation of this device or its compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

iPad®, iPhone, iPod and iPod touch® are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.

1.1.2 iPhone® / iPod® compatibility The Vivaldi app is compatible with iPhone 6 / iPod 6 or later and iPad 2 or later.

This manual is written for the iPhone / iPod app, the iPad app is similar.

Try setting an iPad’s screen rotation to landscape mode.

1.1.3 iOS® compatibility App version 2.0 has been tested with iOS8 and 9.

Wireless Routers

There is a huge number of wireless routers in use and models tend to be replaced annually, so it is difficult to make sensible suggestions. There are no special requirements for the router.

Examples of routers we are currently using: • Netgear WNR3500 RangeMax Wireless N Gigabit Router, with a Netgear GS108 Switch. • Netgear N300 Wireless Router WNR2200. • Asus RT-N66U.



UPnP Servers

The same is true of NAS drives. Examples of drives we are currently using:

• QNAP TS412 • Netgear ReadyNAS RND-2B • Buffalo LS421D • AVA Zara Premium • Synology DS216+

The system has been tested mainly with the following UPnP server software:

• Twonky • MinimServer • Asset

Renderer

dCS Vivaldi Upsampler, loaded with Control version 1.20 or later and Network version v63 or later.

dCS Vivaldi DAC, loaded with Control version 1.20 or later.

While it is possible to use other DACs with the Vivaldi Upsampler, some features will not be available. A different DAC will not respond to remote control commands sent from the App, and it may not be compatible with all of the Upsampler’s output modes.

Network Basics

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a set of protocols designed to allow consumer devices to interact over a network. The Vivaldi Upsampler complies with the UPnP AV protocol, enabling it to communicate with other non-dCS devices, provided they also comply with this protocol.

A network streaming system is made up of three standard UPnP components:

• UPnP Control Point, • UPnP Media Renderer, • UPnP Media Server.

A system may consist of one or more of each of these components. In such a system, all of the media (songs, tracks, videos etc) is stored on the server. This storage device can be a NAS or a Computer. The control point (e.g. a tablet or smart phone) requests the address of a particular item of media from the server (e.g. a NAS drive). It then passes this address to the renderer (e.g. a Vivaldi Upsampler) to play. The renderer directly retrieves the item from the specified address on the server, decodes and plays the media as it arrives over the network from the server.

Enabling network streaming of audio using a Vivaldi Upsampler relies on the presence of standard network infrastructure in your system. A description of the network will not be discussed in this manual but at a minimum the following components are required for system setup: Router, Computer, Vivaldi Upsampler, NAS, Wireless access point (WAP), Wireless control.

Please note that Ethernet cables are required to connect the devices and the NAS must have UPnP media server software (e.g. Twonky, Asset) pre-installed, with UPnP mode turned on. Obviously, your music must be loaded on the NAS drive.

The dCS Vivaldi App is a control point application that will allow users to view / select available renderers, view / select available media servers and browse / select / playback music via the Vivaldi Upsampler. The dCS Vivaldi App is currently available for iPad.



2 STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

2.1 System Set-up

• Download the dCS Vivaldi App from the App Store and install it on your control device. • Connect the Upsampler’s Network interface to the Ethernet network. • Set the control device (e.g. iPad) to connect to the network via WiFi.

Using a Vivaldi Upsampler and DAC with a NAS

Make sure the Control Point, NAS and Upsampler are all connected to the same network!

• Connect the Upsampler’s AES1+2 output to the Vivaldi DAC’s AES3+4 input, as this interface will accept tunnel commands from the Upsampler.

The Vivaldi DAC’s AES1+2 will also accept tunnel commands from the Upsampler, the SPDIF & SDIF-2 inputs will not.

• Set the Upsampler to the Network input, set the Dual AES menu page to On. • Set the DAC to the AES3+4 input, set the Dual AES 3+4 menu page to Auto. • Connect the DAC’s analogue outputs to your amplifier and loudspeakers. • Launch the dCS Vivaldi App.

2.2 Music Playback and Control

2.2.1 Navigation Use these icons to navigate around the app.

Go to the Media list (e.g. Album listing, Saved Playlists on the control point).

Go to the list of servers.

Go to Now Playing / Queue.

Go to Network.

2.2.2 Getting started

Search for zones

Network

• When you start the app, it will search for zones (Vivaldi Upsamplers) on the network.

• If the app cannot find any zones, check that the system is connected to the same network.

• The zones will be listed – tap the one you want to control. If there is only one on the network, it will be selected automatically.



Queue

Media List

• An empty “Now Playing” screen will be displayed.

• Tap to go to the Media list.

• The app defaults to Saved Playlists.

• Tap to see the list of servers.

• Tap on a server to display the browsing

options.

• “USB Input” is the Upsampler’s USB2 port with a flash drive fitted – this can be accessed in the same way.

• Choose a browsing option (Album in this case).

• Tap in the top right-hand corner to display the media.

Search

• Slide down the A-Z list at the right-hand of the

screen and swipe the screen vertically to scroll to the music you want.

• Tap to select.

• Alternatively, to search for a name or word,

tap the search icon . (You may have to drag the media list down a little to reveal the search icon.)

• Type the text and tap Search.

• Select from the search results (or Cancel).

Add tracks to the Queue

• Tap tracks to highlight your selections or tap

nothing to play the whole album. • Tap Play Now to delete the Queue and play

this selection instead.

• Otherwise, tap Queue and choose a position in the Queue in which to add the tracks.

• The first track will start playing.

• Tap to go to Now Playing / Queue.



2.2.3 Using the Queue

• At the bottom of the screen, you will see the playback controls and the DAC controls.

• Provided that a Vivaldi DAC is connected to the Upsampler by Dual AES, you can use the DAC controls to change phase, change volume or mute.

• Tap to open the queue.

• Tap a track to play it.

• Tap Clear if you want to delete the Queue.

• Tap Edit if you want to make changes.

• Tap when you want to close the Queue.

• To delete a track, tap on then tap

to confirm.

• To change the track sequence, drag the

icon to a different position.

• When you have finished editing, tap Edit again.

• To save the Queue to a Playlist on the control device, tap Save.

• Type a new name in the Name field and tap Done.



2.2.4 Playlists

Select a Playlist

• From the Servers screen, select Playlists > Saved Playlists.

• Tap in the top right-hand corner to see the available Playlists.

• Tap on a Playlist to open it.

Load Playlist into Queue

• Tap on a Playlist to open it.

• Tap to select individual tracks, or tap nothing to select the whole list.

• Tap Play Now to delete the Queue and play your selection.

• Tap Queue and choose one of the options to insert your selection into the Queue.

• Tap X to permanently delete the selected tracks or the whole list.

• Tap to go to the Queue.



Controlling a Vivaldi Transport

To use this feature, set the Settings > RS232 Mode menu page for both the Upsampler and Transport to Binary, then connect a null-modem (crossover) RS232 cable (shown in brown below) between the two units.

• Open the Queue page, tap on More… and

then CD. • In addition to the playback and DAC controls,

the panel has a keypad for selecting tracks, eject and change layer for a hybrid CD/SACD disc.



2.2.5 System settings The app allows you to change the system settings.

• From the Network screen, tap Edit.

• Tap the zone you want to control.

• (If you tap one of the Media Servers, information such as the server’s IP address will be displayed.)

• This section allows you change the settings for the system, Upsampler and DAC.

• You can change anything with > at the right-hand side, the other lines are for information only..

• To rename the selected zone, tap on Name.

• Renaming the zone is useful when you have

more than one Vivaldi Upsampler in the system.

• Tap in the text box and type the new name.

• Tap on Save.

• (You can change the Upsampler > Source Names in a similar way.)

• DAC settings, IP addresses, …

Note that once a unit has been switched off completely, it cannot be turned on by remote control.
