As the College of Health Sciences, it gives us great pleasure to introduce this year’s second edition of the Decentralized Clinical Training Programme (DCTP) Newsletter.This special publication highlights various accommodation sites that houses students participating in DCT platforms throughout the province.

The DCT programme has improved since its inception in

2016. The growth has been substantial with 80% of the

School of Health Sciences programmes on the platform.

It is important to mention that the School of Nursing and

Public Health started decentralizing students before the

DCT programme was launched and their curriculum is

advanced in the primary healthcare approach as

compared to other schools. This edition showcases the

facilities provided to students on different DCTP sites

throughout the province.

MADADENI: Students reside in a private fully furnished

residence with Wi- Fi connectivity and cleaning services.

The site assistant who is a UKZN staff member also serves

as an accommodation assistant and resides in the same

complex as the students. Both the Newcastle and Madadeni

students share the same residence facility, personnel and

the same transport.

NGWELEZANE: Students are accommodated at a

privately owned furnished complex which includes

UKZN’s uncapped Wi-Fi connectivity, cleaning services

and an accommodation assistant Officer. The complex

comprises of furnished three bedroom units, kitchen and

bathroom. Both Queen Nandi and Ngwelezane students

are accommodated at the same residence and use the

same transport to the hospitals.

IXOPO: Students at Ixopo are accommodated at a former Catholic Institution which is now used as a private nursing

college. They are allocated single rooms with a bed, desk,

mini -fridge and a microwave. Meals are provided at the

facility since no kitchen equipment is available in the

rooms.

STANGER: Stanger is the home to the majority of Cuban

Collaboration medical students and some students from

the School of Health Sciences. Students are

accommodated in two rented furnished complexes both

equipped with UKZN Wi-Fi. The complexes comprises of

three, two and one bedroom units.

PIETERMARITZBURG: There are four teaching hospitals

in PMB namely; Greys, Edendale, Northdale and Townhill.

Students are accommodated at Denison residence as well

as Greys Hospital Nurses and Doctors Quarters. Denison

residence is part of UKZN residences and is within a

walkable distance from the Pietermaritzburg campus.

MANGUZI: Health Sciences students in Manguzi are

accommodated at a Bed and Breakfast adjacent to the

Manguzi hospital entrance.

GREYTOWN: Here students have been allocated to two

bedroomed units. These two bedroom units consists of a

dining room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

SCOTTSBURGH AND PORT SHEPSTONE: Here students are accommodated in fully furnished holiday flats and are transported to the hospital daily.

HOMESTAY: Final-year Medical students are

accommodated within the rural community as part of the

‘homestay project’ where they get to live with ‘adoptive

parents’.

The College of Health Sciences has ensured that these

services are provided to students to ensure standardization

of services both on campus and off campus. Going

forward, as all students in the College of Health Sciences,

will be expected to train in the DCTP sites as part of their

mandatory HPCSA / SAPC / SANC clinical training. Such

placements are compulsory, non-negotiable, may be on a

rotational and /or longitudinal basis and may extend up

to a year or longer. Whilst the University/College of Health

Sciences will provide clinical training in collaboration with

the KZN Department of Health, in line with UKZN

regulations; students are responsible for the cost of

travel, accommodation and the basic costs of living, as

applicable to and in the placement site.

The Madadeni platform has Park

Home comprising a teaching facility,

multi-purpose meeting rooms and

small meeting rooms equipped

with Video Conferencing and data

projector. The venues have UKZN

Wi-Fi. It has a no pay printing system

and a LAN with a seating capacity of

25 people with 20 computers.

Personnel available on site include an

Academic Admin Support, and Site

Assistant. Student Counsellor and

Student Funding advisor do visit the

site as and when required. Students

are accommodated at a private fully

furnished accommodation with Wi-

Fi connectivity, cleaning services. The

Site Assistant who is a UKZN staff

also serves as an Accommodation

Assistant and he resides in the same

complex as the students.

Newcastle platform does not have a

Park Home but the hospital library

area has been converted into a

teaching facility equipped with Video

Conferencing. The venues allows for

data projection and the teaching area

has Wi-Fi. It has a no pay printing

system and LAN, with a seating

capacity of 7 people with 7 computers.

Both Newcastle and Madadeni

students share the same residence

facility and personnel staff. They also

share the same transport facility.

The platform has Park Home used

as a teaching facility. It has a meeting

room equipped with Video

Conferencing and support. The

venues allows for data projection and

the teaching area has Wi-Fi. It has a no

pay system Printing and LAN, with a

seating capacity of 6 people with six

computers. Personnel available on

site include an Admin Support,

Academic Development Officer and

Site Assistant. Available on site are

also Student, Counsellor, Student

Funding Officer does weekly visits or

as and when required. Students are

accommodated at a privately owned

furnished accommodation with UKZN

uncapped Wi-Fi connectivity, cleaning

services and an Accommodation

Assist Officer. The complex comprises

furnished three bedroom units,

kitchen and bathroom.

Queen Nandi has a Teaching facility.

The platform has Video Conferencing,

data projection and a Skills Laboratory.

The hospital also has unlimited Wifi

and a LAN & Printing facility that seats

12 students. Personnel available on

site include an Admin Support,

Academic Development Officer

Counsellor which and Student is

shared by students on Queen Nandi

and Ngwelezane hospitals. The Site

Assistant who also serves as an

Accommodation Assistant services

both Queen Nandi and Ngwelezane

Hospitals. Both Queen Nandi and

Ngwelezane students are

accommodated at the same

residence and use the same transport

facility to the hospitals.

Students at Ixopo are accommodated at a former Catholic institution which is

The facility also offers boarding and

lodging to its nursing students.

UKZN students are allocated single

rooms with a bed, desk, mini fridge and

a microwave. Meals are provided at the

facility since no kitchen equipment is

provided in the rooms. A mini lounge

with a TV and ablutions is shared

amongst the four students. Transport

is provided by the accommodation

service provider to and from hospital.

Students are provided with Vodacom

Wi-Fi routers for online study

resources.

STANGER Stanger is the home to the majority of Cuban Collaboration students and

some students from school of health

science. It has a park home with a

teaching facility with data projectors

and video conferencing facility which

can also be converted into and

multipurpose meeting rooms. It also

has small meeting rooms, three

offices, kitchen and ablutions. There

is a 25 seater LAN with internet

connectivity and a printing facility.

The facility also offers a Skills

Laboratory facility with four offices

for use by DOH clinicians. Professional

services personnel based on site are

an administrator, a student counsellor

and site assistant. Student funding

staff do pay regular visits to the site.

Students are accommodated in two

rented furnished complexes both

equipped with UKZN Wi-Fi. The

complexes comprises three, two and

one bedroom units. The Site Assistant

also serves Accommodation Assistant,

one of his tasks is to look after students

at the residents and he resides in one

of the complexes. Cleaning services

are also offered at the residence.

(GREYS, EDENDALE

NORTHDALE & TOWNHILL)

Pietermaritzburg has four teaching

hospitals; Greys, Edendale Northdale

and Townhill. Greys and Edendale have

Park Homes and multi-purpose

meeting rooms and small meeting

rooms equipped with Video

Conferencing and. allows for data

projection and the teaching area has

Wi-Fi.

Professional services staff which

includes administrators and academic

development officers are available in

all three hospitals except Town Hill

which is a work in progress. Student

Counsellor based at Pietermaritzburg

renders service to all college of health

science students at

Pietermaritzburg.

Students at Pietermaritzburg are

accommodated at Denison residence

and Greys Hospital Nurses and

Doctors Quarters. Denison residence

is part of UKZN residences and is

within a walkable distance from

Pietermaritzburg campus. The 160

room facility at Greys Nurses home

and Doctors quarters is in Greys

hospital. Denison consist various size

units while Greys consist of singe

rooms with shared kitchen and

ablution facilities. Laundry services are

Wi-Fi is provided at both residences.

Accommodation Assistant and

cleaning services are available at Greys.

MANGUZI

Health Science students at Manguzi

are accommodated at a B&B adjacent

to the Manguzi hospital gate, as a

result no daily transport is provided

for these students. The facility offers

central self-catering facilities and mini

fridges and ablutions are provided in

the rooms. Family Medicine students

who are also placed at Manguzi are

accommodated in a park home facility

situated in the hospital. The park home

offers two rooms with kitchenette and

ablutions. All students are provided

with Vodacom Wi-Fi routers as there is

no connectivity in the area.

GREYTOWN

Two times two bedroom units are

rented at Greytown. Units consist of

sleeping rooms, dining room and

kitchen, bathroom and toilet. Units

are fully furnished and daily transport

is provided to and from the hospital.

Students at Greytown are also

provided with Vodacom Wi-Fi routers

to afford them connectivity. Cleaning

service is provided once a week.

Students at Scottsburgh and Port Shepstone are accommodated in

holiday flats that comes fully furnished.

Students are transported every day to

hospital and back. Wi-Fi routers are

provided for connectivity purposes.

Final-year Medical students are

accommodated within the rural

community as part of the ‘homestay

project’ where they get to live with

‘adoptive parents’.

This is part of the sixth years’ ‘rural block’ and is co-ordinated by the Discipline

of Family Medicine. The students

spend six weeks at rural sites as part of

a decentralised training programme.

This project began in August 2015

with the identification of four rural

sites in the vicinity of the Church of

Scotland in Msinga, St Andrews

Hospital in Harding, the Bethesda

Hospital in Ubombo and the Mseleni

Hospital in a remote area of northern

KwaZulu-Natal.

Suitable host-families, found close to

the hospitals, received funding for

accommodating the students.
