Paige arrives at the Auraria Campus a couple hours before her course is scheduled to begin, so she settles in at the Library, connects her laptop to Wifi and gets to work on her Denver Online course assignments. Paige will repeat this schedule each Tuesday and Thursday this semester: CEC Digital Film course, two hours of Denver Online course work, followed by her CCD English course. Paige is expanding her learning possibilities with the district’s Concurrent Enrollment Program. The program allows eligible students to enroll in post secondary education programs, most commonly through Community College of Denver or Emily Griffith Opportunity School. Emilia Wint | Senior Class of 2012

DOHS Staff Profile: Jessica Kammerling | Social Studies

Emilia is a senior Denver Online student who has taken the flexibility and freedoms afforded by Denver Online to help her excel in her hobby outside of the school setting: freestyle skiing. Emilia has taken courses through Denver Online for a year and half and will graduate this coming May. Emilia credits Denver Online for allowing her to stay on track with her high school credits while spending most every day on the slopes perfecting her skiing skills. Emilia’s skiing talents have taken her across the country competing in contests from Vermont to California, as well as competitions in Europe, including the European X Games in France and Nine Queens in Austria which features elite women freeskiers.

Emilia’s “go big or go home” attitude has helped her succeed both on the slopes and in the classroom where she has maintained an A and B average throughout her high school academic career, all the while, relentlessly hitting the slopes for practice. Emilia is a prime example of a student taking full advantage of the freedoms offered to online learners in allowing them the flexibility to pursue personal goals outside of the school setting. As for her future, Emilia, understanding the great value of education, plans on attending college, as well as setting her sights on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Jessica Kammerling is a first year teacher with Denver Online High School in the Social Studies department. Jessica has taught Geography, Psychology and Economics with Denver Online. Jessica, originally from Castle Rock, received her undergraduate degree at CU Boulder and later earned her teacher certification through Metropolitan State College of Denver. Jessica was drawn to Denver Online in wanting to follow her passion for connecting with students and tailoring their education to meet their interest and needs. “I absolutely love the opportunity to interact and guide my students,” states Jessica. In stepping out of the traditional school interactions, Jessica has enjoyed communicating with her students and getting to know them through email, text messaging, phone conversations, as well as with

occasional face-to-face meetings. These interactions have helped Jessica in her ability to individualize her courses to meet her students’ needs. Realizing that not every student fits perfectly in the traditional school setting mold Jessica is excited to help students thrive no matter what the setting.

Online Learning Tip | Using Distracters as Rewards

Colfax Marathon | Volunteer to Support DOHS and Student Nathan Williams

You are an online student at home getting going on a Monday morning - how are you going to spend your day? Will you work on your 4th Quarter classes that you have been putting off or do you revert to what you typically do – watch some TV, spend a few hours surfing the Internet, play your favorite video game, talk on the phone, and then meet up with your friends to watch a movie? It is easy to fall into the procrastination trap. Instead distracting yourself from completing your schoolwork by doing all the fun things that you enjoy doing more than your classes, use these distracters in a reward system for completing work. For example, reward yourself for completing three Earth Science lessons with a passing grade by allowing yourself to play 45 minutes of video games. You could reward

We at Denver Online would like to invite all runners and non-runners to participate in the upcoming Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon. This is a very popular event in Denver drawing thousands of runners and supports each year and so provides a great opportunity to promote our unique school. For those people who have interest in running there are three events to choose from: the 5-k, half marathon (13.1 mi), and full marathon (26.2 mi). If running is not an interest of yours but you would still like to show your support for the school, consider volunteering your time working at an aid station or handing out information about our school to the many people drawn to the event. The weekend begins on Saturday, May 19th at 9:00am with the 5k at Denver’s City Park. The half marathon and full marathon race events will be held on Sunday, May 20th , also located at City Park, beginning bright and early at 6:00am.

Weekend of May 19th-20th Run or Volunteer or Donate If interested contact Julie Capp @ 720.424.8281

While Denver Online High School is looking to have fun and promote our school through the marathon involvement there is also the chance to raise funds for Denver Online student, Nathan Williams. Nathan is an outstanding student who continues to excel academically in the face of the health challenge that he faces with Muscular Dystrophy. Denver Online would like to raise funds through the Colfax Marathon to assist Nathan’s family in purchasing a wheelchair van lift, helping Nathan gain freedoms and flexibility in his travels. Visit the marathon webpage at coloradocolfaxmarathon.org to learn more about the event and feel free to donate to the cause by clicking on the Charity Partners tab and finding Denver Online High School logo. If you are interested in more details, please, contact school administrative assistant, Julie Capp (720.424.8281).

yourself by watching a movie after completing your US History essay. Or spend Friday afternoon shopping for new shoes at the mall with your friends as a reward for meeting the 50% benchmark in all three of your courses. Use the fun things that commonly distract you from completing work –hanging out with friends, watching TV and movies, checking out Facebook, going to the skate park- as motivation for completing your work instead of keeping you from completing your work. None of these distracters listed above are negative activities until they take a consistent priority over completing course work. Don’t allow negative habits to form. Set daily goals or a daily study schedule and reward yourself for sticking to it.

Having trouble with your online classes? Advisors are always available to students in offering guidance and other online learning tips. If you are having difficulties, don’t hesitate to ask for anything.

Join us in promoting Denver Online High School while supporting 11th grader Nathan. Fundraising Goal - $20,000 - towards a new wheelchair lift for Nathan, our outstanding student with Muscular Dystrophy.
