(IAs)
d) All students receive a final grade of 5-7
e) All students see dramatic increases in their self-
efficacy toward physics and are motivated to
continue their learning in Physics

textbook
c) All students see dramatic increases in their self-
efficacy toward physics and are motivated to
continue in IB or college Physics
Class Procedures
1. Lecture Day
a. Transition Video
b. Check homework answers // Attendance
c. Review homework by Table Groups
d. Review quiz:
i. Graded quiz (5-10 points)
ii. With face partner
iii. With shoulder partner
iv. By Table Group
e. Lesson – See Taking Notes vs Copying
Notes
f. Sample problems by Table Groups
g. Review video
h. Start homework in class
i. NOTE: I will attempt to put lecture notes
on Homework Now the same day the lecture
is given.
2. Taking Notes vs Copying Notes
a. Do not try to copy my notes from the screen
– made so that an absentee can understand
them
b. If you try to copy everything, you miss the
concepts
c. Listen and summarize
d. Lecture notes will be available on
HomeworkNow
e. Try using AVID – Cornell Notes
http://www.swoveland.org/AVID%20Notes_files/
frame.htm#slide0001.htm
3. Grades – Total Points System
a. Class participation on lecture days (2pts per
day, ≈ 40 per grading period)
i. Must be physically present in the room,
alive entire period, and awake for a
minimum of 75% of the period
ii. If absent for any reason, you must
review the notes from HomeworkNow,
take the Review Quiz, and work all of
the Sample Problems to receive
participation credit.
iii. If absent on a graded Review Quiz, you
must come in after school to take an oral
make-up quiz
b. Review Quizzes: 5-10 pts each, average of 1
per week, 30-60 pts per grading period.
c. Labs: 10-45 pts each, average of 1 per week
i. Pre-IB / Phys I H ≈ 120-150 per grading
period
ii. IB ≈ 180-210 per grading period
d. Tests: 35-40 marks each
i. Pre-IB / Phys I H ≈ 3-4 tests per grading
period, 1 mark = 1 point
ii. IB ≈ 1-2 tests per grading period, 1
mark = 2 points
iii. IB Curve applied to anyone who turns
in all homework and Test Review prior
to test and takes the test on the
designated test day (
), e.g., a 65% turns into an 81%
e. Homework: 2 pts each, ≈ 40 pts per
grading period
i. Completion grade only, but must be
legible
ii. Must be turned in before taking the test
on that material
4. Extra Credit
a. Cash only; no credit cards, checks or money
orders (just kidding )
b. Completed Test Review may count toward a
missing homework only for the same
chapter
c. At the end of the grading period, if anyone
is within 2% of the next higher letter grade,
they may turn in a typed, 4-page minimum,
double-spaced, 12-pitch, one inch bordered,
paper on a past Nobel Prize winner in
Physics. The paper must address the
following, not necessarily in this order:
i. Who: brief biography of the winner(s)
ii. What: the reason they were awarded
the prize and why it was significant
iii. Where: where they did their work and
any geopolitical factors that affected
their work
iv. When: time period of their work and
any historical events at the time that
may have influenced their work (like
WWII influenced the Manhattan
Project)
v. Why: why they did what they did, why
were they doing it, was it a discovery
made while looking for something else?
vi. How: briefly describe how they came
up with their results.
5. Materials/Resources:
a. Textbook – kept at home, class set provided
b. Pencil – for computations
c. Black pen for notes
d. Blue or red pen for correcting homework
e. Notebook paper
f. Scientific calculator
g. Memory stick (needed to save work when
working with the Box O’Laptops)
h. Water bottle – preferably a reusable metal
one
i. Computer/Printer/Internet access at home –
let me know ASAP if you don’t have this
j. E-mail address – see i. above
k. Student resource center available in cases of
