All other Science Faculty Staff are part-timers. They belong to multiple faculties and many are Year 7 and Year 8 Homeroom teachers. This year we welcomed new staff – Heston Stowers and Tracy Dahlberg. They are not permanent faculty members, but are invaluable. Their contribution and enthusiasm for teaching science to the junior students spills over into pupils opting for science in the senior college. I would like to continue to acknowledge their wonderful contribution to our faculty.

Health Science Academy Synopsis
In partnership with the Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMBHD), a Health Science Academy was established at De La Salle College late 2015. As of 2015, there are five other health science academies established in Auckland Secondary Schools. The academies were birthed from a need for more Maori and Pacific health professionals working within our communities, as identified by the CMBHD. This academy is for Pasifika and Maori students who are interested in a career in the health sciences. There are more than 80 different careers in this field, including medical specialists, public and community health workers, technicians, midwives, nurses, dental workers, rehabilitation workers, therapists, mental health workers and many more. In 2015, Year 10 students were able to apply to be a part of the inaugural cohort of Year 11 students in. Upon a successful application an interview is conducted and consultation with parents is made. Family support is critical to our student’s success and hence a commitment to the academy is a collective bond between the school, families and the students. We want to raise up young people who will become outstanding role models in their academic achievements and contributors to their local community through their chosen career.
Health Science Academy Objectives 1. To paint a future pathway from secondary school to tertiary level education by providing a link between
subjects studied at school and career aspirations
2. To expose students to real science in action examples outside the classroom; making learning in the classroom relevant, through trips and special guest speakers.
3. To track and monitor achievement to ensure all students achieve to their respective level:
a. NCEA level 1 for year 11 students
b. NCEA level 2 for year 12 students
c. NCEA level 3 and University Entrance for year 13 students
4. To provide academic support through extra tutorials, holiday tutorials, exam study skills seminars and time management seminars.
5. To promote responsibility, leadership, discipline, self-pride, goal setting and self-assessment to ensure all students reach their full potential and achieve the ultimate goal of being successful in the career of their choice.
6. That the students become role models within their own families, peer group, schools and the local community.
7. Create and reinforce community links with Academy Members participating and contributing to community events and projects. This will lift De La Salle College and the Academy’s profile.

Basic composition of Science Education at De La Salle College 2019 Science – Year 7 and Year 8 Science is compulsory for students in our intermediate school, and classes are currently timetabled for 5 lessons of Science in a two week cycle. Teachers in the Junior School can book the use of a laboratory when required. Topics covered are varied and are designed to encourage the student’s interest and enthusiasm for science. Topics at this level are: Year 7 – Science Now 1, Sustainability 1, Chemistry 1, Motion and Energy 1 and Earth and Space. Year 8 – Science Now 2, Sustainability 2, Living World, Rocky Shore, Chemistry 2 and Motion and Energy 2. Science – Year 9 and Year 10 Science is compulsory for all students in Years 9 and 10, and classes are currently timetabled for 6 lessons in every two week cycle. Emphasis at this level is placed on extensive practical work. The ability to develop and carry out fair scientific tests and to correctly operate in the laboratory forms the core at this level. Topics covered at this level are: Year 9 - Introduction, Botany, Ecology, Food and Digestion, Matter, Astronomy, Waves and Energy. Year 10 - Medical Science, Genetics and Evolution, Atomic Structure, Acids and Bases, Metallurgy, Forces and Motion, Electricity, Earth Science.
Science – Year 11 Science is compulsory for students at this level. Here students focus on the new Level 1 Achievement Standards introduced with the realignment of the NZC that cover the core areas of Biology, Physics and Chemistry. There are three different class streams, SCI101 (Advanced Science), SCI102 (General Science) and SCI103 (Applied Science). All SCI101 and SCI102 classes do the same standards bar a change with one internal and one extra in the Advanced Science stream. Advanced Science is more academically demanding and has successfully run now for 8 years (previously called Physical Science). SCI103 is tailored for students who may be a bit weaker academically and has a focus on the applied aspects of science (it is a purely internal based course). Students that do Year 11 Science have classes daily bar one weekly cycle were a double period is timetabled. They tackle the main standards that encompass the core topics of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Science – Year 12 and Year 13 At this level Science subjects are separated into individual areas of study – Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Earth and Space. All classes are assessed purely with NCEA Achievement Standards. At Level 2 there is currently 1xCHEM201, 2xPHY201, 1xBIO201, 1xESS201 and 1xSCI201. At Level 3 there is currently 1xCHEM301, 1xPHY301, 1xBIO301 and 1xESS301. Classes are timetabled for 5 lessons per week. All courses have a very academic focus with the aim that students in Year 13 are well prepared for tertiary level study. The mix of internal assessment to external assessment is approximately equal across all these courses and enables full endorsement in each area.

Science Faculty Building / Room Proposal 2019 The Proposal:
To acquire and re-vamp Room G7 as Science Specialist Computer Laboratory / Earth and Space Science
Classroom. STILL TO BE REALISED.
To acquire G Block end offices as extra Science Storage and Office Space. Access door to be placed through
to G4. PARTIAL ACQUISITION. WE STILL REQUIRE THE STORAGE SPACE AND ACCESS DOOR. SUGGEST THAT
MR. CHARLES (AP PASTORAL) IS MOVED TO SOCIAL SERVICES AREA.
To retrofit insulation and a false ceiling in Room G8 – THIS IS BECOMING REALITY SHORTLY. Sponsored by
‘Habitat for Humanity’ and ‘Green Stuff’ insulation (old boy).
The Rationale:
The Science Faculty is expanding and technology is changing rapidly.
The Science Faculty continues to be strongly successful and should be supported with resources to grow
and give students all they need to succeed.
Space for staff and materials is required as faculty growth continues.
Y11 now compulsory – this now compounds the issues around the Faculties already strong growth.
The Science Faculty is spread and this would help centralise and make the role of the Science Technician
easier as she serves both staff and students.
G8 Ceiling Retro-fit to look at energy usage and to use classroom as a comparison room to the rest of the
school. Student led investigation to place a proposal in front of the Diocese Office.
The Request:
That the Board of Trustees continues to support this proposal and helps see through the remaining
changes as suggested.
That the College Principal & SMT also ratifies the final implementation of mentioned key areas and
supports its timely implementation.
The Science Faculty continues to see great success and we need assistance to allowed this continued
growth.
Thank you sincerely for all the support here to date.
Science Faculty Capital Item Requests 2019 / 2020
