Monthly Summary
The team resumed operations on the 17th of October after having 15 days off, and began patrols by visiting the area of Kilalinda and Kalawa. During patrols in these areas, the team tracked a wounded elephant for 3 consecutive days. The team did have a joint operation with the DSWT Tsavo Veterinary Unit in search of the elephant, but unfortunately it became harder to penetrate the thick forest where the elephant had hidden, so sadly the Vet could not access the elephant. The Team will continue to monitor the area in an effort to locate the elephant.
Other areas patrolled included Mangelete, where an apprehension was made of a man who was found with a fresh buffalo skin. He was booked at Mtito police station for poaching, after which the team carried out patrols in the Tsavo West triangle, re-visiting hot spots. The team managed to destroy several charcoal kilns, and lifted snares set for poaching big game as well as small game.
On the 29th of October the team found two poached elephants in the area of Kalawa, both elephants were in the same area, only 20m apart. Both of them were killed by gunshot wounds, the wounds could be clearly identified in the fresh kill, unfortunately the tusk were taken away by the poachers.
