Deacon seeks closerties between BPIand retail tradeTHE NEED for a closer contact be-tween the BPI and the retail trade isemphasised by director John Deacon inhis annual report being presented today(7) to the annual meeting of the BPI.

Bar Coding, as Deacon pointed out,is due to be implemented by most majorcompanies by the beginning of 1983 andin its investigations into the subject, theBPI had been able to call on thespecialised knowledge of Paul Chartierof W . H. Smith.

"I very much hope and expect to seethe increasing involvement of specialistsand industry leaders from the retailtrade in the next few months. We havelived apart for far too long - we needeach other if we are to pull out of therecession and take our just share of theconsumer spending cake."

After a year in which album produc-tion was one-third below the 1975 level,Deacon predictably didn't have a greatdeal to be cheerful about. "I would be afool to predict a remarkable transforma-tion to better days," he said. "Neverthe-less, even if there are few signs ofimprovement in actual business, there isclearly a greater sense of confidence inthe future." But he warned that iftechnological advances such as the Com-pact Disc and developments in cable andsatellite TV transmissions were to betaken advantage of, then the Govern-ment needed to undertake a "proper andurgent amendment" of the CopyrightAct, now 25 years old. With the Govern-ment Information Technology Unit ab-out to publish outline policy on cablesystems, Deacon stated: "Unless artists,music publishers and record companiesreceive fair remuneration for theirefforts, the Government itself may well

find that its efforts to successfullylaunch this exciting piece of technologywill be severely frustrated. No-one isprepared to see his or her musical workcaptured forever - and for free."

Deacon also reminded members thatthey should not take it for granted thatthe costs of running the Anti -PiracyUnit were a thing of the past as a result ofdamages of up to £250,000 beingawarded in successful court cases."Fighting piracy is a horrendously ex-pensive business," Deacon commented.

The cost of running the BPI is alsocausing concern - "a sombre subject",Deacon called it, pointing out that theorganisation would soon be running at aloss unless a longterm formula forfunding could be worked out. As animmediate means of improving fi-

Killtorch goes into liquidationKILLTORCH, THE concert promo-tion company formed three years ago byPaul Loasby with backing from theManchester entertainment group Ken-nedy Street, has gone into coluntaryliquidation.

The news broke last week as Queenwere mid -way through a massive Britishtour originally co-ordinated by Kill -torch. When Kennedy Street pulled outof their involvement with the companyin April and a liquidation seemed cer-tain, Kennedy Street took over thepromotions to 'safeguard the concerts'according to the company's DannyBetesh.

A creditors' meeting has been

arranged for June 7 in Manchester andMichael Alexander of Lewis, AlexanderCollins and Co, a local firm of accoun-tants, has been appointed liquidator. Itis thought that Kennedy Street will bethe only substantial trade creditor.

Kennedy Street had always kept a lowprofile about its Killtorch involvement.Paul Loasby is a former Harvey Gold-smith right-hand man and was responsi-ble for many of last year's most success-ful concerts, including visits by RandyCrawford, George Benson and the bigAC/DC-headlined Monsters Of HeavyMetal fesitval at Donnington Park.

Only three weeks ago another leadingLondon rock promotion company -Straight Music - went into liquidation.

Phonogram &BBC in Papalvisit LP raceTHE RACE is on to release the firstrecordings of the Pope's visit to Bri-tain.

Both BBC Records and Phonogramhave recordings of the various rallies,Masses and services conductedaround the UK and are preparing torush -release albums this week.

The BBC Records album - entitledThe Official Record of the First EverPapal Visit to Britain, John -Paul II -The Pilgrim Pope (REB 445) - isproduced by Sylvia Canner, who wasresponsible for the BBC's Royal Wed-ding LP. It is expected to retail at £5.25and contains edited highlights linkedand introduced by the Corporation'sreligious affairs correspondent GeraldPriestland. BBC Records is hoping fora release sometime this week.

Phonogram has picked up The Offi-cial ILR Recording of His Holiness PopeJohn -Paul H's Visit To The UK 1982(POPE 11) which has a dealer price of£3.05 (cassette POPEC II, £3.15).

The company is aiming at a June 9release date for the album whichcarries the central theme of the SevenSacrements. It was compiled fromrecording made by radios Aire, City,LBC, CBC, Clyde, Mercia, and Pica -dilly.

Recording was completed at thePope's final Mass in Cardiff lastWednesday, compiled and edited onThursday and master cuts producedby Strawberry Mastering on Friday.

Album co-ordinator Colin Walters,deputy managing director of PicadillyRadio commented: "The ILR cover-age of the Papal visit was the biggestand most successful outside broadcastthe network has ever undertaken. Wefelt it was very important to givelisteners the opportunity to keep theirown record of our coverage."

Philips compact digital disc set for UK in late '82 or early '83PHILIPS IS hoping to launch itsrevolutionary digital compact audiodisc in the UK late this year or early1983, with 150 titles in the initial batchof mini -albums.

The new disc was a major feature ofthis year's Cetex trade exhibition heldon London's Earl's Court last week,where the first -ever UK demonstra-tion of the fully integrated disc player

took place.It was taken as substantial evidence

of progress towards a British launch.The discs will be supplied by Poly -Gram, and although 150 is the UKinitial limit, there will be 200 titlesavailable in Europe from the word go.

Philips is confident that the compactdisc is now virtually assured of accept-ance as the world's digital audio stan-

dard. It works on an entirely newreplay principal which uses a solidstate laser to beam the decoded digitalsound through any domestic amplifierand speaker system. The discs them-selves are only 12cm in diameter andyield up to an hour's playing time.

Said the company's audio marketingmanager Ray Harris: "All the currentsigns are positive. We are now de-

veloping our launch strategy and haveconducted our initial market researchwith more planned. The indicationsare that the appeal of the compact discwill lie not only in its near -perfectsound reproduction but also in otherfeatures like the improved dynamicrange, the lack of wear and tear orscratching, ease of operation andlong uninterrupted playing time."

Betteridge, Wilson &Leahy get readyPLANS ARE well advanced for thelaunch of three new labels master-minded by three of the industry'sshrewdest talent entrepreneurs.

Regard Records, formed by ex -Islandand CBS managing director David Bet-teridge, has its first release now sche-duled and confirmation of the label'sdebut is expected next week.

Also ready to hit the market is acompany called Interdisc formed byCarol Wilson, former managing directorof the Virgin subsidiary DinDisc. A dealwith a major is close to being finalised.

The third new label due to make itsbow is the one formed by ex-GTO chiefDick Leahy in partnership with musicpublisher Brian Morrison. A worldwidedeal excluding the US has been con-cluded with Polydor. Morrison -Leahywill take responsibility for marketingand promotion in the UK, and will alsobe able to utilise Polydor's facilities,while elsewhere Polydor will be re-sponsible for the label under a licensingarrangement.

Leahy told RB: "We have not yetfinalised a name for the label and neitherhave we signed any artists. There are nopressures for us to deliver any productby a certain time and when we find the

Deacon was able to report that theBOTB subsidy for member companiesattending Midem had been increased to72 percent of a three unit stand and 78percent for four or more units.

Reporting on developments in estab-lishing supervised quality standards inmanufacturing, Deacon disclosed thatdiscussions had taken place with theBritish Standards Institute and that aKitemark certification scheme was dueto be established soon.

Finally, Deacon had a comment tomake on industry response to the BPIhome taping logo, depicting a skull andcrossbones. "I am less than impressedby the industry's efforts on the use of thelogo on LP jackets," he said. "If anycompany should come to me with theexcuse that they encounter problemswith certain artists, I will direct them toMr Oberstein. The CBS commitmentto the use of the logo has been exemplaryand I haven't noticed any falling -off ofsales at Soho Square."

Pic discs boostboth 'Iko Iko' 45sTHE BATTLE between Towerbell andStiff over their different versions of `IkoIko' was stepped up this week whenboth firms decided to issue sales -boost-ing picture discs.

Currently it is the Towerbell versionof the Dixie Cups' hit that is makingfastest progress on the RB chart, sungby Natasha - wife of Towerbell chiefBob England.

Heavy promotion will surround therelease of a 10,000 limited edition of thesingle as a picture disc (TOW X 22)carrying a recommended retail price of£1 . 04 .

Stiff's version - by The Belle Stars - isbeginning to break on the RB chart.The company has not put a firm total onits limited edition (catalogue number PBUY 150) which has a 79p dealer price.

`Sneaky' chargeby dealersrefuted by EMIEMI THIS week denied it had used 'asneaky way' to deprive record dealers oftheir prompt payment discounts forMay.

Traders called RB last week to com-plain that when they sat down to dealwith their monthly accounts last Friday(May 28), they found a small note ontheir EMI invoices to the effect thatpayment should be made by noon thatday. They were angry that there hadbeen no prior notification of this newprocedure and that they would now losetheir discount.

But EMI referred dealers to article11A of its terms and conditions oftrading - supplied to every EMI accountholder - which specifies that paymentmust be made by the last day of eachmonth to qualify for the prompt pay-ment bonus - unless that day falls on aSaturday or Bank Holiday in which casepayment must be made by the lastbusiness day of the month.

?eview Ross 'ragged' at WembleyTHE RETURN to Britain of DianaRoss was not the anticipated triumphwhen she opened at Wembley Arena lastWednesday.

She turned in a performance full ofstops and starts, bad temper and petu-lance which included an abrupt walk -offand a climactic kicking of a monitorspeaker off the stage.

The problem which afflicted herwhole performance concerned her evi-dent dissatisfaction with the quality ofsound coming from the monitors placedon the white circular disco stage in thecentre of the arena. She occupied italone with the orchestra standing to oneside. The concert started about 40minutes late and she sang four numbersbefore complaining that she could nothear enough of the band on the moni-tors. Her attempt to get the audience to

stand were countered by chants of "SitDown" from those in the top -priceArena seats whose view was obstructed.

The sudden departure from the stageafter a ragged 'Mirror on the Wall',may or may not have been a scheduledinterval. She re -started with 'You KeepMe Hanging On' and then announced:"I can't hear my voice on the monitor, Idon't want to scream." Shortly after-wards she stopped the band during`Inside Out' and completed the song tothe accompaniment of bass and audi-ence hand -clapping. Although she final-ly redeemed herself with a stunningencore vision of 'Endless Love' it wasnot the kid of show to convince fans whohad paid up to £20 per ticket that theywere getting top value from an acknow-ledged superstar.

A RANGE of classical cassettes retailingat £1.25, making them the lowest pricedserious music available in the UK, isbeing launched this month.

Promenade Cassettes, with distribu-tions through Lugton and H.R. Taylor,is releasing 16 titles, all recorded by theGrande Orchestra Radio-Tele-Luxem-bourg and one by the Vienna FestivalOrchestra. Titles feature music by Wag-

Meanwhile, ace record producerChristopher Neil has cut a Neon Musicsong, 'Hurry Home', with Ariola bandWavelength. The song which has TaskForce undertones was written by up-and-coming Geordie songwriter SteveThompson who, ironically, has justsigned a longterm, worldwide song -writing agreement with MCA Music.Thompson was released by Neon onlytwo months ago.

On the subject of covers, how manypublishers are now queuing up toacquire sub -publishing rights to the newAlessi Brothers album, Long TimeFriends, which has just been released onthe WEA-distributed Q -West label?Produced by Christopher Cross, thealbum features a number of Crosssound -alike songs that could lead to afew tasty covers. Warner BrothersMusic apparently still controls a numberof the duo's old songs, but the newalbum only lists the brothers' MoreAlessi Music company as the publisher.

Terry Oates of Eaton Music reportsthat a sequel to one of last year's mostsuccessful albums, Hooked On Classics,is currently being produced. Eatonpublished all of the contemporaryarrangements of the classical piecesfeatured on the album which went on tosell some 9 million units worldwide.Eaton will control all of the tracks on thenew album, says Oates.

Last Summer, a lot of other pub-lishers' copyright and royalties staff alsohad to cope with the problem of sortingout royalty payments on medleys be-cause of the flood of medley singles thatthreatened to engulf the charts - withmaybe a dozen different titles per side insome cases. But this year, if the trend setby Bow Wow Wow's version of theoldie, 'I Want Candy' catches on, theycould be faced with the other extreme -one-sided singles featuring only onesong. A royalty department's dreamcome true!

Les Lowe of United Artists Music,which publishes the Bow Wow Wowsingle, says he expects to receive the fullstatutory copyright royalty of 61/4 per-cent - although he has apparentlyreceived no confirmation from RCARecords about this. Meanwhile RCAtold Record Business that it intends topay UA the full 'A' and '13' side share.

The loser in this instance wouldappear to be April Music which onlyrecently paid a lot of money to acquirerights to the Bow Wow Wow catalogue.Normally, '13' side mechanicals are auseful and fairly reliable way of clawingback advances.

One move onfrom Bucks FizzDAVE REDS H AW finds twopeople who are impatient forsuccess with their own group,after mastermindingphenomenal hit success forothers.

SAY ANDY Hill and Nichola Martin,the masterminds behind Bucks Fizz:"You've got to forget about Eurovisionafterwards. The people who buy thatkind of record are the people who onlybuy about one record a year."

And this is why the pair have becomeinvolved in putting together a groupcalled Paris; a group which will, theyhope, carry their talents forward into thelonger -lived area of album rock and givethem an eventual identity as a live act.

Which is not to say that Bucks Fizz orthis year's Euro entry Bardo (whomNichola Martin put together) are beingforgotten - far from it. Only that the twoof them now want to go out on tour withtheir very own act; instead of constantlybeing involved as backroom people -either as writers, producers or backingmusicians.

Two years ago Andy Hill was anadvertising jingle writer. He bookedNichola Martin to sing on some of hisproductions and then Graham Broad, adrummer. The three of them got on sowell that they started to do jingle work asa team. "We shared the same sort ofmusical taste," remembers Nichola,"but of course in between came BucksFizz and Bardo."

With a wealth of backroom successbehind them - and in Andy and Nicho-la's case, the very heights of pop singlessuccess - they now have a hunger toachieve success with an act of theirown. They know the value of a singleshit and are hoping against hope thattheir second release 'No Getting OverYou' can break it for them (at presentit's getting good airplay but is a slow

sales starter). But ultimately they wouldlike to develop Paris into an album act,pointing out that most of the songsthey've got together so far for theprojected album are ballads.

"It's not so much that the instru-mentation on Paris is heavier," saysNichola, "it's just more relaxed. It isclassier pop with a slight American feel.They'll be mostly our own songs but wemight occasionally pick another.

"If the singles are successful we wouldthen do a tour to promote the album.Graham and I both like to gig but we'vedone it as support all the time. It wouldbe so nice to go out there for once in ourlives where people have paid to see you."

The group knows that TV appear-ances are of paramount importance ingetting exposure for this kind of act.

"We did a TV show at TVS but Ithink we might be on the new LondonWeekend morning shows. There are notthat many TV shows at the moment.We're doing a video for Peter Powell'sGet Set For Summer. He said that he'dplay it if we had a video but he can't putus on live yet because he's booked up forabout a month ahead."

The group admits that live shows willpresent it with problems if it wants toproject a corporate image.

"As Graham plays drums and Andyplays most of the other instruments,shall we get in other musicians? But ifwe do we can't get an identity as a group.Style of clothes and that sort of thingcomes into it too but we haven't gotaround to thinking about it yet."

However, the group does intend tocultivate an image, with picture bags forits records and a carefully worked outstyle for its photographs and publicitymaterial.

Where does all this leave Bucks Fizz?"We're still continuing to write for

them," says Andy, "it's business asusual, in fact we're trying to break themin the States. But they're establishednow."

Stones canstill pullin theyoung fansROLLING STONESGlasgow, ApolloTHE STONES descended on Glasgowlast week as part of the Scottishwarm-up for the rest of their Europeantour.

In a set which lasted over two hoursthey delivered a host of new materialplus half -an -hour of all the ones theaudience had really come to hear. Withonly a couple of exceptions, it appearsthat the Stones themselves felt hap-pier and more at home with oldstandards like 'Brown Sugar', 'HonkyTonk Woman' and 'Satisfaction'. Ofthe rest of the set the only song whichmatched that enthusiasm was theonly -once -released 'Chantilly Lace'.

Jagger was on form visually - thedaily exercises he has been taking areobviously paying off. He looks asenergetic as he was 20 years ago andcan still twist audiences round his littlefinger. Even people who weren't twink-les in anybody's eye when the bandfirst started out.

Bill Wyman was a big part of the act.His subtle changes of facial express-ion were as captivating as Jagger'sleaps and his solid, imaginative bassplaying was a vital part of the group'ssound.

Although the crowd was as excitedas the Stones could hope for, it wasreassuring to note that there was notrouble at all. The Apollo has been thescene of some fairly nasty incidents inthe past, and it is a credit to the newmanager and his staff that a night aspotentially explosive as the Stonesonly Glasgow gig passed off with theminimum of hassle and the maximumof fun.

RY COODERLondon, Hammersmith OdeonFOR RY Cooder to have made thetransition from the small -print of ses-sion musicians on the liner notes ofCaptain Beefheart and Taj Mahalalbums to headlining eight straightdates at the Hammersmith Odeon isone of the more unlikely successstories of rock'n'roll. His cult status asa curator of the American popular songis also deserved and the fact thatBritain has now taken to him in a bigway as a live act in his two previoustours is encouraging.

With a band that included Jim Kelt-ner on drums and the amazing RasBaboo on percussion as well as histhree regular black back-up singersplus two keyboards and bass, he wasequipped for a night of his morestraightforward R&B style and indeedthis was what the audience got. In factit was early in the set that Cooder'sown showcase was presented - amoving version of 'How Can A PoorMan Stand Such Times And Live?'

which featured his most exquisitebottleneck playing of the night - andfrom then on it was a selection of hismore up -beat songs including 'BlueSuede Shoes' and the more obscureselections from The Slide Area andBop Till You Drop. Only the thirdencore -a fabulous treatment of SamCooke's 'Chain Gang' performed aftertwo -and -a -quarter hours on stage -and perhaps 'Hollywood' a little earlier- really brought the crowd to a peak,but throughout, this was music thatbrought a smile to the face.

BELLE STARSLondon, The VenueBOUNDING ON-STAGE, the girls putover their musical cocktail with anenthusiasm and style that caught up aresponsive audience. They seemednervous at the beginning and it tookseveral numbers before both groupand audience relaxed and started toenjoy themselves. Ranging from sam-ba to calypso via African tribal rhythmsThe Belle Stars are rarely dull.Although sometimes the ideas do notquite gel, when they do the results areexhilarating as in 'Indian Summer' and'Burning', making for infectious footand body movement.

The basic group line-up is au-gmented by two sax players whobeef -up the general sound, and withlively, constantly moving musicians,singer Jenny Belstar needs all herenergy not to be upstaged, pouting,twirling like a spinning top, dancing upand down the stage and acting out thelyrics. Perhaps because of all this thevocals are sometimes unintelligibleand occasionally off-key, but this doesnot seem to hamper audience enjoy-ment.

The first encore was their latestsingle 'Iko Iko', with all seven to thefront of the stage shaking out therhythm with a battery of percussionand getting the audience singing thechorus. A second encore of 'GoodTimes' and a re -run of 'Sweet Memory'left a well satisfied audience.

The set perhaps needs to be betterpaced with some faster songs at thebeginning but on this showing the BelleStars should be well on their way.

The first record out was New AgeSteppers' Vol. 1 at the end of 1980 whenthe label was launched. It is run by fivedirectors - members of Creation Rebeland London Underground, MartinFredricks, Sherwood and Kishi Yama-moto, who is responsible for sleevedesign and other artwork. Despite hispessimistic view about making money,Sherwood says he is trying to run On USound as a busines and indeed he hasrecords out in Japan, Germany andFrance (although the following is de-scribed as "pretty underground").

Sherwood and his label will havebenefitted from the press interest in lastmonth's release Pal Judy (ON U LP16)by Judy Nylon, although he has some

reservations. "She may have been betteroff on a major. It doesn't fit into anynatural specialist market, really it couldbe played in many homes. A major couldstill pick it up and spend money on it.Pal Judy was actually our most expen-sive production so far."

If Judy Nylon's can be described asone of the more accessible recordsSherwood has produced, he is actuallygoing for the Top 30 with CreationRebel's new single, 'Love I Can Feel'"It's the only potentially commercialrecord I've ever made, quite bouncyreally, a Summer hit I feel sure", hesays. The song is taken from the band'salbum Lows And Highs (B RED 33/ONLP 15), which is out next month.

RIOT CITY Records, the Bristol -based punk label, has launched a newlabel, Riot State, which will concen-trate on American punk material. Thefirst such release in a compilation LP,Hell Comes To Your House, previouslyavailable on import. The album fea-tures two different tracks from the USversion and is out on June 4. It is SamCooke's 'Chain Gang' (RITZ 020) andis distributed by Spartan.

HANNIBAL RECORDS releases thenew Defunkt album, ThermonuclearSweat on June 11. The US band will bepromoting it with a European tour,including seven dates in Britain. Han-nibal plans a campaign of windowdisplays in major cities, local radiointerviews and advertising in the con-sumer press. Hannibal is distributedby Stage One.

ANOTHER WORLD Cup -orientatedrecord is released on June 4 on thePanache label. It is 'The Ballad OfBulldog Bobby' (PAN 2) by Dave andthe Bulldogs - actually Dave Dee indisguise. Last month witnessed the crash ofNEMS for £660,000 and Fresh for wellover £100,000 among the better knownnames, along with four smaller opera-tions.

What is going wrong in the seeminglyirrepressible indie labels sector of therecord industry, which only last yearappeared to be the only bright spot on adoom -laden landscape?

"Most of the bankruptcies we areseeing at the moment are really nothingto do with the general economic reces-sion," opined music industry accoun-tant David Sloane. "They are down tobasic mis-management. People aresimply running their businesses badlyand they are not calling upon the helpand advice of people with the financialknow-how to keep them going."

The problems are partly historical,according to Sloane, who said there weredistinct differences between the trou-bles that strike distributors and recordlabels.

"Distributors find they have the abil-ity to generate far too much cash tooquickly. There aren't many companiesin distribution and a new entrant to thefield might pick up quite a few labelsquickly. They will not have to pay forthe stock they handle, and if they get afew sellers, they will not have to pay thelabels back for at least 60 days."

He said that inexperienced operatorssee a nice fat bank balance and decide tobuy cars, hire new staff, move to biggerpremises and generally increase over-heads too quickly.

When the time comes for paying thelabels, there is cash in hand from thesecond batch of new releases, so theymight use some of that money to pay thefirst set of bills. This is an accountingphenomenon called 'teaming and lad-ing', and while not actually illegal, canstore up obvious problems for thefuture.

The labels themselves face a differentset of pitfalls. The custom pressingindustry likes to keep its factoriesturning over and its expensive plant inuse, so there is often little difficulty inobtaining credit from them. Plantsnormally insist on a minimum order,and their bill will be the single biggestoverhead of any new label. New labels

Bankruptcy timeamong the IndiesWhy the sudden epidemic of company crashes in the indie sector?JOHN HAYWARD asks some industry experts for their opinionand hears that the closures perhaps have more to do withmismanagement in a sector which expanded too quickly than withthe general economic recession.

"The pressing companies are pre-pared to take the chance on a new label,and may only be interested in seeingtheir materials paid for to begin with,"agreed Sloane. "They are really tradingon the future loyalty of the label andhoping for another Stiff to come along.When the small label runs into cashflowproblems, or the hits fail to materialise,the pressing plant is often the biggestcreditor."

Last year's disasters for the majorrecord companies had convinced themof the wisdom of staff cuts and over-heads trimming, but the small labelsexpanded during the same period inorder to fill the gap as they saw it. Manyredundant record company men set uptheir own operations.

But the belt -tightening operation hadleft the majors in a better position tomake money from their hits, while thesmall labels' lack of financial expertisewas not long in coming home to roost.

SLOANE POINTED to the recent

success of Zomba as an example of howto expand safely in the dangerous busi-ness climate of 1982.

"There you have a company run byaccountants, who started in a very smallway in the UK and gradually built onsolid foundations," he said. "Theycould have launched the label a longtime ago, but by making sure everythingwas right and the company was in astrong enough position to sign the rightacts and market them properly, theresult has been one of the quickestsuccess stories of recent years."

Rough Trade's Richard Scott wasequally sanguine about the root cause ofmany -record label bankruptices. "Theycan't run their businesses properly," hesaid. "Luckily the independent networkassociated with Rough Trade has anumber of experienced people at the topand these companies are now verystrong.

"I think the whole problem boilsdown to the size of the mark-up in ourbusiness. We are not in the boutiquetrade and we have to operate on around15 percent."

Scott said Rough Trade tried to givehelp and advice on all levels to clientlabels, and didn't think the financialclimate was any worse in the small labelssector than in previous years.

PIONEER LABEL boss Iain McNay ofCherry Red, himself a trained accoun-tant, was scathing about new companieswhich expand too fast.

"I know exactly how many records Ihave to sell each month to break even,"he said. "For two years I worked out ofmy own dining room in Wimbledon on asingle telephone line. It was only lastyear that I moved into offices in Bayswa-ter, and I have kept staff levels down to aminimum. It's really a case of takingcare of business and not relying on hitsto meet your profits forecasts.

"It is quite easy to run a company withthree or four people on the staff. I thinkit is after you have tasted a bit of successand the staff gets up to 20 people that thereal problems can start - unless there issomeone at a high level who understandscredit and cash flow."

Among the creditors of the NEMSRecords crash was MCPS, although thesociety's commercial operations chiefGraham Churchill was philosophicalabout record company bankruptcies ingeneral.

"Inevitably there will be losers, andthey sometimes include debts to thissociety and the publishers and songwri-ters in their turn."

Churchill accused some record com-panies of ridiculous speculation and saideven the major companies were notimmune to the vagaries of the rock'n'rollbusiness which have brought several tothe brink of collapse in the past fiveyears.

"To run a record company, I believeyou need a solid foundation and it isextremely important to have someoneon hand who understands copyright andthe firm's obligations in this respect.

"Companies now have to meet certaincriteria to be offered a fascimile agree-ment by the Society," said Churchill."And we are also examining our controlsystem with the companies who havedirect agreements with us, and com-municating our concern to the thirdparties with whom we deal for ournon -agreed companies."

Top 10ROLLING STONES: Still Life (Amer-ican Concert 1981) (Rolling StonesCUN 39115) Prod: Glimmer TwinsThe Stones' timely release of the bestR&B cuts from the recent American)tour certainly makes the best of thecavernous acoustics available at thegiant stadia they played last year, andprovides a good idea of what Britishaudiences are hearing on the Britishouting. Among the re -treads (somegood, some merely interesting) of oldmaterial like 'Under My Thumb' and'Time Is On My Side' there are gallantgoes at 'Twenty Flight Rock' (OK),`Going To A Go Go' (disappointing)and 'Imagination' (quite good). Shoulddo well on the back of the tour but atany other time maybe just a pot-boiler.

GENESIS: Three Sides Live (Charis-ma GE 2002) Prod: GenesisA double album containing some of thegroup's greatest hits recorded live lastyear in Europe and America. Suchnumbers as 'Turn It On Again', 'Aba-cab', 'Duchess', 'Follow Me, FollowYou', and 'Misunderstanding' soundno worse for being delivered live giventhe class of a Genesis concert. Threetracks were recorded the previousyear and as a bonus for long term fansthere is also a version of `If/Watcher OfThe Skies' from 1976 when the line-upincluded Bill Bruford and Steve Hack-ett. This is the usual quality Genesisproduct but packaged in a simplesleeve with a thoughtless sparcity ofinformation.

RANDY CRAWFORD: Windsong(Warner Bros K57011) Prod: Tom-my LiPumaLong awaited, Randy Crawford's newalbum turns out to be very muchSecret Combination Vol. 2. Themusic mix is that same blend of softlyfloating ballads and tidy, unforcedmid -tempo tracks exquisitely per-formed by the best black female singerto emerge in years. Indeed, the treat-ments are so resolutely in the mouldpreviously developed, that there is aninitial temptation to give the LP lessthan its true worth. But repeated playsconfirm the quality of the songs, parti-cularly her interpretations of Don

Covay's funky 'Letter Full Of Tears'and the bluesy 'This Night Won't LastForever.' The album is obviously des-tined for a long run in the best sellers.

Top 40VARIOUS: Hit List (Warwick WW5123) Prod: VariousFor the price of a 20 -track hits compila-tion, Warwick has decided to extendthe 'twofer' concept to throw in a 45rpm EP featuring four full-length ex-tended versions - two pop/rock andtwo disco - of recent chart hits, a goodidea for those who were unable to gethold of the 12 -inch versions of 'HappyBirthday' by Altered Images or Im-agination's 'Just An Illusion.' The mainalbum is the usual amalgam of hits andnear -hits teaming Gary Numan andTygers of Pan Tang and Natasha's 'IkoIko' and Girlschool's 'Don't Call It Love'for instance. The TV promotion shouldsee it home.

Best of the restLENA ZAVARONI: Hold Tight, It'sLena (BBC Records REB443) Prod:Stewart MorrisSongs associated with her TV seriescause inevitable stylistic comprom-ises. This album, which has much tocommend it, suggests an exercise inspanning the generation gap. Side onehas 20s -type flapper songs rubbingshoulders with Swing Era standards,including a sparkling 'Sing, Sing, Sing'.The reverse attractively covers thefamiliar territory of the Presley, Man-ilow, Beatles and Paul Simon song-books. The outcome is a testimony toher versatility, but a blurring of her trueidentity as a singer. The usual BBC -TV'commercials' will give the album ahelping hand.

TOM VERLAINE: Words From TheFront (Virgin V2227) Prod: TomVerlaineThe level of critical acclaim for TomVerlainehas suffered an unfortunatedecline since his band, Television,broke through with Marquee Moonback in 1977. Now solo, this isVerlaine's third album and his firstfor Virgin, which continues his pen-chant for rhythmic, urgent songs

The jobwhich Capitol has taken on is tomake the public view them the sameway. Two sell-out concerts in Lon-don did much to spread the wordas did the single, 'Street Corner', takenfrm the concept opera side of thealbum. The tracks on this album are ofthe highest calibre and if heard wouldbe enough to guarantee success. It issimply a matter of getting these songsbefore the public.

THEATRE OF HATE: He Who DaresWins (Burning Rome SSSSS 2P)Prod: Terry RazorThis live album (not to be confusedwith a cassette -only release of thesame title from 1980) is a clear indica-tion of the band's increasing appeal. Ithighlights both the dramatic traditionalrock structure of the group as well asthe recent rebel guerilla stance. Led bythe charismatic Kirk Brandon, TOHsweat and drive their way through arepertoire which includes 'Rebel With-out A Brain' and 'Westworld', bothrecent releases. Should top the indiechart and cross over as well.

EDGAR FROESE: Sold L974-79 (Vir-gin V2197) Prod: Edgar FroeseAs a member of Tangerine Dream,Froese has been a leading exponent ofthe electronic synthesiser movement.He also came up with some soloventures, on which this compilation isbased. Most tracts conform to theestablished formula: bubblingrhythms, drifting, melodic synthesis-ers, and are highly pleasing to the ear,if a bit soporific. 'Stuntman' and 'TropicOf Capricorn' are the best tracks on analbum which could do quite well in thepresent climate.

RICO: Jama Rico (2 -Tone CHR TT5006) Prod: Dick CuthellRico's battered trombone sound hasbeen one of the trademarks of the2 -Tone sound over the past couple ofyears, and the old boy has built upquite a following in his own right. Thiscollection of nine gentle reggae in-strumentals rarely strays from the solidgroove formula, with an easy lopingbeat and the slightly more stridentcounterpoint of Dick Cuthell's cornetand fluegl horn with which the trom-bone links in some imposin choruses.It is only on 'Destroy Them' that themusic gets at all angry or different, andhere might lie a new musical directionfor Rico.

SHAKIN' PYRAMIDS: Celts andCobras (Virgin V2216) Prod: RogerBecherianThe Scottish trio that seem to be ableto play anywhere from a market squareto a concert hall have made a debutalbum that shows of their versatility inthe rock 'n' roll stakes and should winthem many friends. The Pyramidshave called in a fair number of rockingsession persons to add to the basicsound, and throw in some interestingcovers as well as showcasing theirown material. The Everlys and ElvisCostello are in the mix along withheartfelt originals like 'Like Me WithNo-one' and 'Reeferbilly Polka'. Alikeable album.BEAUTIFUL MUSIC ONE (ASVABM750) Compilation: Martin Has-kellThe album is sub -titled 'The Swan -Julian Lloyd Webber, and 12 othergreat classical themes.' The name -check for the highly popular youngcellist, will help focus attention on thisenjoyable selection of classical 'lolli-pops', but it should not be assumedthat he is the featured soloist. He's onlyon one track and the remainder are bythe likes of the RPO, LSO, Orchestraof St. John's Smith Square and theNew Philharmonia.

MOON MARTIN: Mystery Tour(Capitol EST 12200) Prod: RobertPalmer/Moon MartinNot quite a magical Mystery Tour, butwith Robert Palmr collaborating on theproduction, the album is laced withamiable, good -rocking tracks. Hisvoice is a bit too lightweight for any-thing really supercharged to emerge,but his heart is in the right place asproved by 'Finishing Line' and 'She'sIn Love With My Car' which movealong purposefully in that clean, Amer-ican AOR way. Probably not for the UKmarket without a hit single.

THE GUN CLUB: Fire Of Love (Beg-gar's Banquet BEGA 37) Prod:Chris D./Tito LarrivaShortly to re-emerge on Blondie mem-ber Chris Stein's new label, The GunClu built their reputation on this debutalbum on the American Ruby label,now available here through Beggar'sBanquet. It's a fine album of strong andsavage New York rock with some goodtunes, a nice sense of dynamics led bysinger Jeffrey Lee Pierce and guitaristWard Dotson's slide work - which pro-vides some of the roughest and mosttelling edges. Stand -out cuts are'She's Like Heroin To Me' and 'SexBeat'. It's an album that could go well ifthe band manages to make a tourhere.

ROBERTA FLACK: I'm The One(Atlantic K50890) Prod: Ralph Mac-Donald William Eaton/RobertaFlack/William SalerRoberta Flack's eleventh album forAtlantic will not be remembered as hermost stimulating. She is now in dangerof disappearing into the morass ofbland American easy -listening pop.There's a rather good Bacharach-Sayer song, 'Making Love' which pro-vides a bright spot, but the remainingmaterial comes and goes without anyreal impact.
