“Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward

to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 3:13-14

What an incredible year we have had at Community Baptist in 2009. We could talk of our new additions to the church, or better yet the new addi-tions to the Kingdom that we were able to witness through Statements of Faith and Baptisms. We could even spend an entire article addressing the new building and what a blessing it was to finally move into it. But I have learned that the Bible is not much on looking backwards when it comes to doing the work of Christ. I recall in Mark chapter 8 when, after calling a disciple to follow him, Jesus encouraged the one being call to drop all things and pursue at all cost. Jesus reintegrated that point in Luke chapter 9 by stating that anyone who looks back is not focused cor-rectly. Let me say that Jesus was not saying that we shouldn’t periodically reflect on the faithfulness of God or his provision. Reminding ourselves of these things helps to build faith. What Jesus is warning of is the fact that the past has the ability to dictate the future if we are not careful. It is now 2010 and what does God have in store for Community Baptist Church? That is a fabulous adventure that is yet unanswered. I can assure it will not be like last year or the year before. It will consist of new faces, new opportunities, and new visions combined with those God has already brought to our CBC family. Our Mission Opportunities will be local, na-tional, and international. There will be opportunities to learn about God , teach others about God, and learn the art of evangelism. You see, that is what great about our God. The Mission itself never changes, but the new-ness of His daily guidance is incredible. We find in our daily dependence a refreshed view and a desire to be in God’s presence, to be about God’s work and to be among God’s people. As our logo states, CBC will be a place to believe, belong and become. As your Pastor I am excited to be at Community Baptist Church . . . I am excited to be a child of God . . . and I am excited that it is 2010! What are you praying He will do in your life this year, and what are you willing to do if He asks?

Laced with beautiful arrangements of traditional carols and Christmas songs created by Derric John-son, outstanding newer songs by Geron Davis and a handful of special solos, the Worship Choir presented what many long-time CBC members have described as our best Christmas musical ever. The first-ever morning worship peroformance on December 13th capped months of painstaking practice and prepara-tion and concluded with a rousing performance of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from his Messiah. A special thanks is extended to Jonathan Lowery and Michael Parr for their technical assistance.

Dear Community Family,

Time flies when you are having fun. It seems like just yesterday that I was writing last year’s letter for January. At that time, we were wait-ing on the word to go get our new daughter, Sarah Hope. What a wonderful addition to our family she has been! Hannah Grace was so excited to have a new sister and even more excited to have a new best fr iend. We are so blessed to have two little gir ls that are so precious. The youth has also been tremendously blessed. I can honestly say that Fuge this past year was the best youth camp that I have ever experienced. Our youth group has grown so much spiritually and it is my prayer that they we continue to grow closer to God and expe-rience Him in everything they do! As we move into the year 2010, I hope that everyone has a wonderful year. I pray that our church will continue to reach out to our community and share Christ with them. I pray that we will accomplish more this year than we ever have and that we give God the praise for everything we do. I am so blessed to work with such a wonderful staff and to be serving at a church with such wonderful people. May God bless each of you this year!

Whats Been Going On…

Dec. 6 – SNAC Time – After the children’s musical, the youth had a blast with one of their favorite events…SARDINES!!! There are so many new hiding places in the new church! For some it means more hiding places, and for some it means more places to be scared!!!

Dec. 18 – Youth Christmas Par ty – We celebrated Christmas this year at Jenny and Jason Car ter’s house. Dir ty Santa was the highlight of the night, as usual. And once again, the Barnett’s topped all gifts with their homemade 4HYM Board Game. Someone needs to star t work-ing now to top this one off!!!

Dec. 20 – After the evening services, we headed to McDonald’s for some supper. We then took off to Hoover to catch the movie “The Blindside”. Wow! What a movie. If you haven’t seen this one, you need to check it out.

Dec. 28 – We made a run to the Galleria for some after-Christmas shopping. It is amazing that so many people shop so much before Christmas and still have shopping to do afterwards. The Galleria was packed with people and we mixed right in!

Whats Coming Up…

Jan. 6 & 13 – FUGE 2010 Sign-Ups – Don’t forget to sign up for M-Fuge. The cost is $350. A $50 deposit is due by Jan. 27. Final bal-ances are due May 26. The trip will be June 21-26.

Jan. 13 – FUGE Meeting – We will meet immediately following our Wednesday night worship service. Parents and youth who are plan-ning on going to Fuge should be there. We will be going over the basics about camp and fundraisers. Please make every effor t to be there.

Jan. 17 – SNAC Time – We will be going bowling in Vestavia imme-diately following the evening services. We will bowl from 9-11pm. There is no school on the 18th, so we will be out late. We should return to the church around 11:30. The cost to bowl and eat will be less than $20.

Jan. 23 – Boy’s and Gir l’s Day Out – The boys will be playing flag foot-ball. The gir ls activity and times for both activities is TBA.

Jan. 31 – Youth to Supper – Where – What-A –Burger When – Right after the evening services How much $$$ - $5-10church around 2:30 pm. Bring money to eat with and some to shop with if you want to.

CBC EAGLESThe Eagles met on Dec. 12 for their annual Christ-mas fellowship which included lots of yummy food and Dirty Santa swap which is always a very fun time. This year we had the added pleasure of having Billy Mims leading us in Christmas carols, and a few solos. We also had Annette and Melissa in their true Cajun tongues, read some Lousiana style “Twas the Night Before Christmas” stories. All 31 in attendance ate well and laughed hard so it was a very Merry Christmas time for all. If you missed it, there is 2010’s gathering to look forward to. There will be no January gathering.

DOVESEleven DOVES gathered on Dec. 8 to eat Holiday treats, fellowship and write Thank You cards for SS teachers, staff and others we felt were especially deserving this year. Thanks to Mrs. Ann Gamble for allowing us to f lock to her home to enjoy this time together. The January meeting will be at the home of Darion Bates on Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. If you are inter-ested in being a part of our CBC inreach program, please plan to come and join us as we sometimes make visits, phone calls, write cards, take part in missions and much more.

Among the many exciting and rewarding things that happened at Community Baptist Church in the year 2009 was the continuing influx of new church members. The continuing growth–while exciting–also creates a chal-lenge that we broaden our view and deepen our commitment to the Lord and to one another.

In 2009, we welcomed into our membership: (Row 1)Scott & Amy Blackmon; Bobby & April, Tamera and Savannah Bur leson; Gene, Theresa & Kristi Lowery; Rosemary Hatch; Scott & Angie Davidson; (Row 2)Tammy Johnson; Tim & Lisa Sims; Jimmy, Ashia & Haley Johnson; Jay, Cheryl, Josh & Jacob Cofield; Kyler Car ter ; Pam Jones; (Row 3) James Lee; Keith & Stephanie Howell; Kelly Amis; Mike, Dana & Christian Hollingswor th; Howard & Karen Holsomback; Denise Hollen; Dutch Miller ;(Row 4) Lea Anna Boyce; Amanda Springer ; James & Julie Sims & Christi Abrams; Dale & Robin Bailey; Michaela Lamber t; Br yan & Robyn Bagley; (Row 5) Brian & Brooke Coker ; Daniel & Ashley Ferguson; Bonnie Lipscomb; Bill Atkinson & Renae Phipps; Paul, Lisa and Rachel Etheridge; Keith & Crystal Burnett; (Row 6) Jason & Christi Koons; Dean & Carey Griffin; Rachel Black; Brandon Boyce; Terrie Oxley & Lindsey Oxley; Tim, Jane & Meaghan Owenby; (Row 7) Michael Riddle; Brenda Golden; Dwight, Krista, Nicolas, Noah, Natalie & Noelle Barrows; Michael & Sarah Bearden; Anthony Downey; Matt & Kelley Herndon; Bambi Terr y; and, (Row 8)Mike, Ann Jay, Michael & Lloyd Harrison.

Nursery Volunteers,

With the holiday season approaching I have placed three schedules (No-vember, December, and January) on the bulletin board across from the nurser y. Please stop by and see where and when you are scheduled to work. Every ones names are written in pencil so if you need to swap shifts with someone you can ask them and make changes as needed. We also have a few empty spots so if you can work one of those even for one month it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mrs. MarionYOU CAN HELP!!

MATT & kELLY HERNDONDECEMBER 6 - MEMBERSHIP TRANSFER

They were already neighbors, living in Chinaberr y as they have for a couple of years, so it was a neighborly thing for Matt and Kelly Herndon to come asking for membership in CBC on December 6. They were welcomed hear tily. Matt was born in Mississippi but grew up in a number of places as the family followed his minister father all over. Before graduating high school and enrolling in and graduating form Mississippi State, Matt had graced the front doors of 11 different schools. After graduating from Mississippi State in 2000, he worked in a real estate management and improvement business before becoming general manager of Cornerstone Restoration in Helena, where he’s been for 5 years or so. He and Kelly were set up by the conspiring minds of their sepa-rate relatives who were on staff at another local church. For her par t, Kelly grew up in Anniston and gradu-ate from Saks High School in 2000 and Jacksonville State with a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition in 2005. She worked for a while in fit-ness testing and then served as a ministr y assistant at a couple of dif-ferent churches until their son Camp

came along. Camp arrived on the scene in February 2009 and is at the stage where he likes pushing around his big dump truck and eating spa-ghetti. When they had leisure time (i.e ., before Camp), Matt and Kelly played co-ed softball. Matt also has a work-shop where he likes to build stuff. Kelly enjoys ar tistic ventures like painting and sewing.

DECEMBER 20 • MEMBERSHIP TRANSFER

Since Ann Jay Harrison had worked at Thompson Intermediate School with Bro. Greg you’d a-thunk she’d know

better. But she, her husband, Mike and sons, Michael and Lloyd, all asked if they might move their church mem-bership to CBC on December 20, 2009, and we agreed that they could. Mike is the head wrestling Coach and assistant football coach at Shelby County High School, where he’s been for 7 years. Before that he’d had 3 years at St. Clair County and before that 7 years at Bessemer. It was while at Bessemer that the Auburn grad was kind enough to unload the trunk of a newly-transfered teacher named Ann Jay Puckett, and the rest was histor y. Before that fateful moment, Ann Jay had grown up in Aliceville and graduated from Samford University in 1991 with a degree in Elementar y Ed. Her Master’s degree was earned at the University of Montevallo. From there she taught in Bessemer City Schools for 13 years, and has been at Thompson now for 6. She’s a 4th grade teacher. After marr ying in 1995, the Harrison’s were blessed with Michael, their first-born, in 1997. He’s a 7th grader at Thompson. His younger brother, Lloyd, arrived in 2002 and is a 2nd grader at Meadowview. Of course, dad and the boys all like wrestling, football, hunting and fishing. Mom even has been drawn into some of those activities as well. In addition, the Harrison’s enjoy trav-eling as a family, especially to the beach. Ann Jay and Mike both sing, although Ann Jay says that they’ve never sung as a duet. Ann Jay has directed a youth choir in another church. The Harrison’s call Alabaster home. And Community Baptist their church home.

COMMUNITY BAPTIST

EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT

from Brother Matt MonkEducation Minister

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ: I trust this finds everyone doing well and having had an awesome Christmas season. What a wonderful time to celebrate the love and grace of our God. However, the time following it can be a pretty big letdown as we have to return to our normal routines and schedules and begin to miss the family we get to spend so much time with during the Christmas holiday. One cure of the winter time blues that may occur following Christmas is to get into the Word of God. As always, we offer Sunday School for all ages every Sunday at 9:45. We also offer Discipleship Training during the Fall and Spring to offer opportunities for everyone to grow deeper in their faith and apply their faith to everyday life. On Sunday January 10, we will offer our first Spring Session of Discipleship Training at 4:30 PM. The first session will last from January 10 until February 28. During the first session we will offer two classes on Sunday as well as a class on Monday night. These classes will consist of the following:

EphEsians: Have you ever wanted to study the role of the Church in the Christian faith. Have you ever wondered why being part of a body of believers is so important? Then a study of the book of Ephesians will be right for you. In this six week study, we will explore the background of the book as well as examine a saved church, a separated church, a shining church, a steadfast church, and a supplicating church. The goal of this study is to see how the church plays a vital role in the growth and development of each believer for the glory of God. FaiTh EvangElism: Ever wanted to learn how to share your faith? Ever wanted to encourage new believers? If so, then FAITH evangelism will be a course worth exploring. The FAITH evangelism course teaches believers how to go out in groups of three to visit and share their faith with those in their community in order to reach the lost and encourage believers. This will also be an opportunity to let the community know of our Sunday School as information is relayed back to our Sunday School classes for ministry and follow-up This course will consist of both classroom and field work. sElF DEFEnsE: A very unique class will be coming to CBC on Mondays at 7:00 PM beginning on January 11. This class will be led by our own Bob Emrick. Utilizing his karate background, Bob will be teaching several different tech-niques on how individuals can get themselves out of a dangerous or harmful situation and even utilize these dangerous situations as a tool to reach someone for Christ. This class promises to be a high energy course that can be beneficial for anyone looking to learn how to handle a difficult situation.

Childcare will be provided. However, we are in need of childcare workers for this first session. Our normal childcare worker during discipleship (my wife Mary) will be having our fifth child during this time and will be unable to provide childcare. So if anyone is interested in helping with childcare, please let me know as soon as possible. As always, if you have any questions or need any information about any of these questions, please let me know. Thanks so much and have a great New Year!

In ChristMatt

New Discipleship Training Classes Begin January 10th

On Christmas Day, 1939, Britain’s King George VI, the father of Elizabeth II, decided to do something he detested and speak publicly on the radio. He had a speech defect known as a stammer, but determined he would revive a cus-tom his late father had started and bring an annual message to the British people. This being the first Christmas of the war with Germany, he rightly thought they could use the encouragement. While the king and his staff were working on his broad-cast message, someone sent a clipping from the Times of London to Buckingham Palace. The little article contained a prayer of sorts that had been found on a postcard in the desk of a deceased Bristol doctor. That man’s daughter had used it on greeting cards, one of which was received by a Mrs. J. C. M. Allen of Clifton, who had kept it. Realizing the words were appropriate for her country at the outbreak of the war, she passed the postcard on to the newspaper. Just after 3 pm on Christmas Day, King George began with these words to his people: “A new year is at hand. We cannot tell what it will bring. If it brings peace, how thank-ful we shall all be. If it brings us continued struggle we shall remain undaunted. In the meantime I feel that we may all find a message of encouragement in the lines which, in my closing words, I would like to say to you.” Then, he delivered the lines which had come their circu-itous route, from the doctor’s office to his daughter, to Mrs. Allen who sent it to the Times, and thence to the palace. Now, those words were being given to the world. “I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.’” In his book 1940, Laurence Thompson tells what hap-pened next.

Newspaper editors began a frantic search for the author of that piece. Cables flashed across the Atlantic in the hope that the Ameri-cans might know. Some suggested G. K. Chesterton, John Bunyan or Thomas a Kempis. Then, the BBC announced the name of the author: 64-year-old Miss Minnie Louise Haskins. Thompson writes, “Miss Haskins, a retired lecturer of the London School of Economics, then living at Crowbor-ough, in Sussex, had not heard the King’s broadcast, but had been listening during the evening to a BBC summary of the speech, when the words spoken struck her as ‘oddly famil-iar.’ Not until the quotation was finished did she remember that, many years before, she had written something like this in a slim volume of verse called ‘The Desert,’ which had been privately printed in 1908 and sold in aid of Zenana missionary work in India.” Within days, Minnie Louise Haskins was famous. Her little volume of poetry was republished and went through eight more printings. By 1943, some 43,000 copies had been sold. Thompson writes, “It achieved for her what a lifetime’s work in factory welfare and social science had been unable to do: an entry in ‘Who’s Who’ and an obituary in the Times when she died in 1957.” I found this while reading the Laurence Thompson book and thought you would appreciate it.

From the Pen & Heart of A New Begi N N i Ng i N 2010

Within the human heart is always a desire for another chance, another new beginning and this desire is never more prevalent than in the first month of a new year. We all make resolutions, that prove to be either successful or forgotten within a month or so. We all seem to get the “do betters” in January. It is a time to take stock of our lives and to seek to mend whatever ails us. This can be a good thing, if we dig deeper within ourselves, than general self improvement and new goals to attain. How about if we take a good look at ourselves, spiritually? How is our relationship with our Creator? Does He seem far away? Or have we moved further away? We know in our hearts who moved. Have you begun to serve Him, since that trip down the aisle? Have you sought His will in all things? Is your life filled with peace of mind? It is one of the greatest gifts that comes with salvation. Are you joyful? Happi-ness depends on circumstances but joy is not dependant on anything but the love of God. I love the way it bubbles up at the oddest times. How do you feel about your fellow Christians? Does that joy flood your soul when you meet a new person and find that they are Christians, also? Jesus tells us that this gives us a clue as to whether we have passed from death (dead in our sins ) into life (into life everlasting with God). Our love of our fellow Christians is the acid test of Christianity (our new life in Christ). These little wis-dom bombs are scattered about through scripture. And they are like little gem stones, here and there. Start a good Bible reading program in January and it will be the greatest investment in your future that you will ever make. Bible studies are great and can be done as a group, or alone, with only the Holy Spirit to guide you. Either way is great and will pay great dividends in soul enrichment. Reading over and over and over through the Bible does something else. You begin to see the great overall picture. You begin to see the forest, instead of only the individual trees. You begin to connect the dots and you begin to open up so much more to the wisdom of God and marvel even more at His great plan. God loves to have His Word valued as it should be, and longs to have us desire His wisdom guiding our lives. Invest in a good prayer life. Start by thinking of others. The prosperity gospel teaches you to center on yourself and getting all you can for self. The true gospel teaches us to center on God and His kingdom and on others. When our fellow Christians suffer, we must intercede for them, in prayer and in any way that we are able. Mike and Bobbie Sue Carter and their family have blessed me many times over. This family is living out Christianity and truly walking the walk. Chick and Mattie Childs came to my rescue the other day and they called Jason Carter. Jason was there in 5 minutes. A couch was picked up at a place that does not offer delivery. That couch was badly needed, though I did not really dream how much. A few days later, my fam-ily in Dallas came home for an unplanned trip. I kept my 5-year-old great grandkids for 4 days and slept on that couch in my master bedroom and let the children sleep in my bed. Thank God for families like the Carter’s and The Child’s. These people and their families will always be in my prayers. I pray that they will always be blessed, in everything that they do. Happy New Year to all my church family and may your trust always be in the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, Jesus Christ.

Love in ChristMrs. Ann

THE B IG DOG BARKS

Bro. Dave

For those who may not know, my “real job” these days is serving as Editor of The moundville Times, a small weekly newspaper published in Moundville, AL. When I arrived at the office this past Monday to begin work on this week’s issue, instead of the happy post-Christmas glow I expected to find, there was somberness and I soon learned why.On the day before Christmas, Diane Davis Abernathy had collapsed in her kitchen as she and her husband, Joe Seale Abernathy, returned from a wonderful day of Christmas shopping and holiday fun. Within hours, the 58-year-old lifetime Moundvillian went on to heaven, leaving her childhood (since 3rd grade) sweetheart, parents and a stunned community behind. Her memorial service had been held on Sunday, the 27th and this was the following morning. Over the course of the morning, it was clear that the town was mourning. Folks in person and on the phone would tear up, have to pause to regain composure, and talked with clear love and admiration about their new “Christmas angel.” She had graduated from Hale County High School in 1969, earned her Elementary Ed degree from the University of Montevallo and returned home to devote 30 years of her life to teaching at Akron Elementary School, in the very isolated part of Hale County, while becoming an extraordinary teacher and leader in the Moundville United Methodist Church and multiple organizations in the town and area. Never blessed with children of their own, the Abernathy’s doted upon hundreds of kids at Akron and Moundville through school and church for more than 35 years. As I was putting the paper together the following day, I was still without a good picture of Diane for use and called her parents’ home with some reservation. Her mother, Margaret, called back early that afternoon and was willing to locate and bring me some pictures for possible use. In the couple of hours that followed I kept review-ing the words of a handful of tribute pieces that friends had forwarded to me for possible inclusion in the paper. They each radiated such love and admiration for this wonderful woman who had touched so many lives in such Christ-like ways, and I felt a certain sadness of my own, that I had not known her in her lifetime. I had met her when she and her parents had been involved in folding and labeling The Moundville Times during a brief period when I’d helped out at the paper several years ago. They had all seemed pleasant enough, but our time together was brief and “taking care of business” and nothing more. As I reflected on that and on all the sorrow and dismay that seemed to be swirling around Moundville, I pondered the influences that had helped fashion such a special individual with Christ-like qualities. Later that afternoon, Margaret Davis walked into the office, bearing three pictures of her oldest daughter. Except for her quietness, there was nothing in her appearance that would hint that she was a mother in mourn-ing. But she was. She had now lain to rest both of her daughters, having lost her younger daughter to cancer several years ago. We chatted briefly and she said that she was doing “okay under the circumstances.” She apolo-gized twice: first, that the pictures were not better than they were; and second, that she needed to get back to the house, because “we have lots of people there.” I thanked her for the pictures and told her I understood as she headed home. And I did understand a whole lot more than I had earlier. It dawned on me that this lovely lady, in the midst of one of life’s cruelest moments, had just demonstrated a personal trait that she undoubtedly demonstrated many times over to her daughter. For even in her hurt and dismay, she cared most that others were cared and provided for. From all that had been shared with me over two days’ time about her late daughter, this was a lesson that Diane Davis Abernathy had been well-taught and put into practice over a full if all-too-brief lifetime of service to others. The conclusion was easily achieved that what Lincoln described as “the better angels ofour nature” had been bestowed from mother to daughter in the Davis household, and by the daughter to hundreds of others before she was called home. Even while mourning, there was ample reason to celebrate the life of Diane Davis Abernathy, the newest Christmas angel.

A Christmas Angel

Blessings,

GOODBYE GRANNY!Dorothy Applin

June 18, 1916 - December 24, 2009

When she joined Community Baptist Church in February 2007, Dorothy Applin became our eldest member. “Granny,” as she was lovingly known, added her easy smile and pleasant personality to our family mix. She went to our Lord’s side December 24th. Her busband, Bob Applin, predeceased her in 1969. Reba Hatcher, with whom Granny has lived since moving here from Headland in 2001, is one of her five children. A homemaker most of her adult life, she worked as a cook and cashier after her hus-band’s death until she retired. Around Community Baptist, Granny was virtu-ally certain to be seen in the company either of her daughter, Reba, or granddaughter, Gwen Hatcher, both of whom loved and were deeply devoted to her.
