Spring Flowers at Dead Horse Point State Park
When dusty green shrubs and red sand
give way to bunches of colorful flowers, we
know spring has arrived in the desert. At
first, a few small yellow or white flowers
pop up randomly. Soon there are flowers
everywhere, in every color of the rainbow!
When you are out hiking in the desert,
whether it’s on a mesa or in a canyon, see
how many colors you can find!
Flora and Fauna
When you enter the visitor center,
be sure to ask for a plant and
animal list. As you visit the park,
check off the plants and animals
you find. Bring a pair of
binoculars and some water, and go
for a hike. Hiking is a great way
to get the family outdoors and
having fun together!
Desert Safety Tips
For a fun and safe trip with your family, please observe some simple tips: Drink plenty of water! Stop
for water and snack breaks. Stay on the trail! Many of our overlooks are not fenced and are located
near a cliff edge. Protect your pets and park wildlife by keeping pets on a maximum 6’ leash and
please clean up after them. Wear good shoes when hiking a helmet when biking. A hat and sunscreen
are also good ideas. A bad sunburn is a good way to ruin a trip to the desert!
Hey Kids!
Become a Junior Ranger! Ask for a booklet at
the visitor center or attend an advertised Junior
Ranger program to get your badge. Being a
Junior Ranger means always staying on the
trail, picking up litter and always viewing
wildlife (even lizards!) from a safe distance. The
plants and animals live
in a harsh environment
and when they are
chased or harassed, it
makes survival that
much harder for them.
