Introduction

In 1871 in the Great Maze the inhabitance of the boom town of Colby vanished and where never heard from again.    Two years later the town of Lazarus was founded on the ashes of Colby. Lazarus is now slowly gaining the size and success of it's predecessor.  

The Ghost of Colby looms over the town.   The shadows close in darkly about this small town as our story opens, the only question is, what brings you to Lazarus.

Lazarus Town

Town History

The town of Colby was a small boom town that was build in late 1869 from everything folks can remember it was gearing up to become a much larger settlement maybe even a small city.   In 1871 all the inhabitance of Colby vanished.   Not a soul knows what happened to them

In 1873 the town of Lazarus was founded on the foundation of Colby, a group of travelers and miners used the abandoned building to weather a particularly bad storm and just never left.    The two remaining members of this are Alphonse Hardy and Emory Vinsant.

The first business and business refurbished in Lazarus was Kathy's Hotel owned by Alphonse Hardy.  Soon other businesses followed though the town was struggling at best until the arrival of Toal Callaghan, who soon became Sheriff and brought what at the very least resembles law and order to Lazarus.

Today the town has a populations of roughly 300, mostly miners and their families,   along with carious businesses. 

PLACES OF iMPORT

Kathy's Hotel

The central building in Lazarus is Kathy's Hotel. Built by Alphonse while waiting for his wife Katherine to join him Kathy's was the first 

building to be fully rebuilt.     

Mr. And Mrs. Hardy own and operate Kathy's. There is a bar on the first floor and more then enough tables for gambling and even sitting down to have a meal.    

Kathy's was the local meeting place until Church Field was established, now it's only used as the town meeting hall if the weather is bad.

Mayor's Home

The second house to be recovered and rebuilt was the Mayor's Manor.   It's the second biggest house in Lazarus.   To the North West of Kathy's and sitting slightly above the rest of the city.   Other then being one of the nicer buildings in town and home of the Mayor there isn't a lot to say about it.

Soong's General Goods

Soong's General Goods is one of the first new building in Lazarus, and the second business to open up in town,   Soong's is closer to the edge of the plateau that Lazarus sits on.    

Mr. Soong and his family arrived in Lazarus in the last month of 1873.     By 1874 the Soongs had a store and access to a dock they had build and now maintain.     Soong Bao San the oldest son does monthly trips to Shan Fan to pick up supplies for the locals.

Sheriff's Station

The local Jail is also referred to as the Red House. The Jail had a front office area cells in the back 

and on the south side a small home that the local Sheriff and his deputy live in.   The Jail was founded before the Sheriff arrived however the Sheriff's home was only added on in 1874 when Sheriff Toal “Red” Callaghan became Sheriff.

The Jail house is also outfitted with a large bell out front that is used as an alarm for trouble or pirate raids.

Hawkins House

The Hawkins House also know as the Broken Promise is the largest house in Lazarus, it was restored by Gussie and Clint Hawkins, a Brother and sister from New York.   The Broken Promise is some times referred to as a Hotel, however everyone understands that it's a Brothel.     The Broken Promise is below from the Mayor's house.

The Eagle Recoveries Company

The Eagle Recoveries Company is based out of something that looks like it might at one point been a barn.    It is located away from the main strip on the west edge of the plateau  It is the only place with a lift other then the Soongs.     The head quarters of a small salvage outfit they also have a small set of docks that float below, twice the size of the Soong family.

The men who work for the company are commonly referred to as the Eagle and all company boats have a Eagle painted on them somewhere in the native style.    

None of the Eagle use any of the new science they sent groups up around the maze and the eagles are paid a percentage of their findings, plus bonuses for those that report particularly lucrative items.

There is also a long building that houses the employees of Eagle Recoveries, though others 

can be rented space there it's mainly for employees.   Some times called the Eagle Barn, most rooms are small wooden areas with a single bed and chest for personal effects.   

Church Field

Church Field is a large Field on the west south end of town.    The town has no Church but Reverend Coffin has a sermon ever Sunday and organizes a town potluck every Sunday evening. 

Every Saturday night the Reverend and some local volunteers set up a large tent for the Sunday morning service.     The field has been officially named Church Field until the Reverend can build a real church there.  All members of the community come to at least one of these functions.

Doctor's House

There is a House for a Doctor in between the Soong General Goods and the House of Broken Promises. There is no Doctor in town but the House had been repaired and is waiting for the town's Notice for a much needed man of medicine to be answered.    There are nice living accommodation upstairs and room for a practice on the ground floor.

LOCAL figures

Mayor Emory Vinsant

Emory Vinsant is the Mayor of Lazarus was one of the travelers who spend the night in the Ghost Town of Colby.    He commented that the town wasn't all bad and seemed to have decided to stay. 

Mayor Vinsant help rebuild Kathy's Hotel.  He helped get many of the towns people on their feet and into homes,  for this he was made mayor.

Emory is an older man who walks with pained legs.  He uses two canes to get around on.  He is friendly very sociable but seems somewhat distant.  

Some are starting to worry that old age is catching up with him and he's become scattered brained. He often rubber stamps what ever the Sheriff places in front of him and acts senile from time to time.

Sheriff Toal “Red” Callaghan

Sheriff Toal “Red” Callaghan is the law in Lazarus.     Toal is straight from Ireland, he had a thick Irish accent, hard green eyes and hair red as fire, which is where he gets his nick name.   He is mean, dominating and sometimes cruel. However he keeps things organized the people safe and it's only outsiders he forced to kiss his boots, most of the time.   

Red lives with his son (who is also his deputy) in a small two room home that is attached to the Jail house.    Red hasn't been all bad for the town he's organized them against raid he had the large bell to alert everyone in front of the jail built.    

However on top of particularly being the Local Judge, Jury and executioner Red is the tax collector and paid out of the local taxes. 

Sheriff Callaghan has many vices and indulges all of them,  He's not known for being nice or gentle, there is possibly one human being in the world he cares about that isn't himself and that's his son Kevan.

Deputy Kevan Callaghan

Deputy Kevan Callaghan is Red's son, he has shocking red hair like his father but his eyes are a gentle brown.  Kevan is a strong looking young 

man much like his father but Kevan unlike Red is an upstanding Kind and responsible lawman.     

Kevan came to the town along with his father, the locals wonder why he is with Red not his mother and how on earth Toal “Red” Callaghan managed to raise an honest boy.   

However when push comes to shove regardless of what Red does Kevan is fiercely loyal to the only parent he's ever known.  However he is probably the friendless person you will meet in the sheriff's office.

The Hardys

Alphonse Hardy was a bank teller back east until the bank he worked for decided they needed a man to go to the Maze, what exactly for he has always been vague in explaining.    After getting to the Maze and placing several request to go home and being turned down several times Alphonse spent that fateful night in the ruins of Colby.

With the Mayor's help he set up Kathy's a Hotel that was name after the wife he was forced to leave back east and shortly sent word for her to come and join him.     Weather he actually sent a letter of resignation to his former employer is unknown.

Alphonse is a polite man if not a bit quiet Katherine on the other hand is a social butterfly and enjoys talking and she sing some times for the guests in the evenings.       Alphonse is on the town council and though he's not as powerful as Red his status as a town founder makes him influential 

The Soong Family

The Soong family all arrived together from Shan Fan setting up their General Store and small 

shipping business.   The family is all hard working, and it shows in how much they do. They send their Oldest son monthly to go and get goods from Shan Fan and will even takes orders. They have been in trusted in taking the mail there as well.

The Soong maintain the dock below the lift they maintain.   Charging a fair price for those who wish to use it.   Mr. And Mrs. Soong have 5 children their second boy is going to be reaching the age where he can be tough to make the run to Shan Fan as well, this the town expanding this a very lucky thing.   

A rumor is floating around that the Soogn's oldest son's name or part of it anyways is suppose to go to the third child in a family,  what happened to the children who should have come before him is unknown.

The Hawkins

Gussie and Clint Hawkins arrived together and bought the largest house in the town.  They repaired it and then proceeded to fill it with lovely ladies.   Gussie is an authoritative women, who takes in any wondering girls who have been left to themselves for what ever reason.     She offers protect at the cost of one's body.   

Gussie is not particularly mean or cruel but she is business minded and has been hardened by the Maze.  However she doesn't make her girls do anything she wouldn't do.

Clint is harder though he is generally a nice man he doesn't allow anything to go on in the house He takes all weapons at the door and is the firm no nonsense type.   Clint has even been known to hunt down men who don't pay or who cause trouble.     Red had never stopped him.

Reverend Gordian Coffin

Reverend Gordian Coffin arrived with a bag over his shoulder and a beat up bible in his hand.  It didn't take the Reverend long to become a member of the community,   He is far from the Fire and Brimstone type.    He quickly took a hand in helping out everyone in the community regardless of their religion or race.    Hardy allowed him to give a Sunday Service in the bar until the Mayor donated Church Field to him and his cause.

Reverend Coffin takes care of the grave yard in town along with arranging the Sunday Potlucks with Mrs. Hardy.    The Soongs Brought him a large white tent from Shan Fan, along with a stain glass cross.   He gets help to put up the tent every Saturday Evening and makes sure the Cross hangs at the front of it.

He lives in a small one room dwelling beside Church Field, He hopes to build a church but tends to sink his funds into local needs constantly setting back the building of the church.

Rafeal Heyman

Rafeal Heyman lives outside of Lazarus, he is a miner and one of the original folks who made the faithful over night stay.   Unlike Hardy and Vinsant he didn't stay however after he made a nice claim he did return to get himself a small rebuilt home and bring in what he's mined.

Heyman is generally antisocial and stays out of everyone's business.  Often he isn't actually home but out at his claim.

Bill Searching Eagle

Bill Searching Eagle  is the owner of the Eagle Recoveries Company, a half breed Bill follows 

many of the old ways of his people though he has made certain compromises for living among the citizens of Lazarus.  For example Bill will pick up a gun when it is completely necessary.    

Bill is a quiet man sitting on the outside, given he is the owner of one of the two docks in town you would think he's be rivals with the Soongs.   This is not true the two groups have taken to working in different areas and pretty much leave one another alone.

Bill is a friendly if not distant sort.   Being an outsider from two cultures has that effect on people   his reaction is more like that of someone who had been bitten then of a cruel interlingual.

Town Council

The persons who make most of the important derisions in town, also who Red brings criminals to when a trial would be necessary.    The council consists of the Mayor, Alphonse Hardy, Bill Searching Eagle  and Reverend Coffin.   Red is not officially on the council but most folks figure he controls so much in town he might as well be.

Town NOTICES

doctor needed !!The town of Lazarus is indeed of a Doctor, Mayor Vinsant is offering a fully furnished home, and a fee of 20 a month$ for the first year to any Doctor willing to come out and take up residence in Lazarus. There is only one position open. Meals of all sorts will be taken care of compliments of Kathy's Saloon for the first two months of the Doctor's residence.

Sheriff HiringThe Sheriff's Office of the Town of Lazarus is offering jobs for enterprising independents to protect the local lifts and defend the town against raids from all sources. Board along with one meal a day will be provided for anyone who take the position.

Good Men WantedThe Eagle Recoveries Company is looking for talented boat men to work for their salvaging company The Company offers sleeping accommodations along with commotions and 2 for each$ week out in the waters of the Maze.

Opportunities for Young WomenMs. Hawkins of the Town of Lazarus is presently offering positions to young ladies to work at her home. There are all manner of positions open and none will be turned away. Harder jobs will offer more money though all employees are given free room board and

meals.

Land is for sale in the Town of Lazarus, plots are going for 150 to 500 depending upon the$ $ size of the land wanted for purchases. Some plots come with intact older building that can be refurbished for a reasonable price. Please contact town council.

Mazers Guide'

History

California 1868:An earthquake the likes of which he world has never seen before or since shattered the west coast from Mexicali to Oregon. In its wake was left the “Maze,” a labyrinth of jagged mesas towering over the flooded sea­channels below.

Magnificent new beasts such as the Maze dragon, were discovered in those troubled waters, but more amazing was the discovery of what some at first thought was simple coal. In fact, the sundered landscape had cracked open to reveal a new mineral heretofore undiscovered.

This new fundament burns a hundred times hotter and longer than coal. When burned, the strange stuff gives off a ghostly­white vapor and howls like the Devil Himself, so the first survivors of the quake who discovered it called it “ghost rock.”   The name stuck.

Lay 'o the Land

The Maze is a mass of shattered canyons that is all along the coast of California.    

The salt water that fills these canyons are infest with all manner of unsavory creatures some of which don't even have names yet,  the greatest of these are referred to as the Maze Dragons, great 

sea serpents that roam the Maze.

Man eating sharks are also common in the waters of the Maze simply put the best policy is not to fall in.

There are several different types of settlements in the Maze.    People live anyway they can, some folks have taken to living in their claims creating communities of what others call cavemen.   They tent not to be of the friendliest sort and often crazy from exposure to ghost rock.

Some Mazer live exclusively on their boats. They go about only getting at the easiest claims, they are often referred to as Cherry Pickers or Boat Rats.    They often enter into conflict with those above because of the threat of careless blasting.

The largest settlements in the Maze are Mesa Towns these are fully built small towns at the tops of the plateaus that make up the maze.  They are accessible by lifts and other elevation devices which are closely guarded, since a favorite trick of pirates is to destroy these and starve out a town.

The Law

The Maze is one of the most lawless place sin the Weird West they say that a man's life isn't worth a 

bullet in the Maze.Often you can't trust someone you meet alone not to kill you for what you have,  he really can't trust you either.    Murder, robber and rape are far more common then most civilized folks care for or even want to hear about.

However there are two types of justice in the Maze,  A company known as the Rockies or the Greater Maze Rock Miner's Association, regulates claims and settles disputes.

Despite the name the Rockies are not miners but business men with shipping influence.   With contact to sell ore all over the world, they have made themselves the ones to sell and buy from.

You can register your claim at almost every large Mesa town usually a trust worthy individual such as the local Saloon owner can help you fill out a claim.

The Rockies appear to mostly be there to keep dispute among miners to a minimum so the ghost rock keeps flowing.

Other laws such as murder, robbery rape assault are dealt with by the local authorities.   This can be anything from a Lynch Mob, to a committee of the towns more reputable members who hold a trial.

 Unfortunately a good deal of the time these trials are a farce, evidence means little and the trial really depends on the accused ability to defend themselves.

Often these Committees are called a Hemp Committee and are little more then glorified and organized Lynch mobs.

Making a Living

Most of the money in the maze is made not by the miners but off the miners.    Goods are at a premium due to how far everything is away from everything else.   Because Most of the water in the Maze is sea water even drinkable water is costly.

Often the amount of saloons in a town can be used to gage it's successfulness.    

Painted ladies and gamblers also stand to make a good amount of money off the miners.   

Many of the none miners know that they will have money as long as any Miner strikes good.

There are less reputable types who make their living off other.  Such as bandits, pirates and thieves.    They are a very real fact of life and danger in the Maze.

Important Paces

Shan Fan

Built on the ruins of old San Fransisco , Shan Fan is a major port and run by the Shan Fan Triad. Most of the locals are of Asian decent but not all of them are, though it is hard to go anywhere in the cities power structure without any Asian blood. 

Lost Angels

Run mostly by the over zealous Preacher, Reverend Grimme, Lost Angels is close to where the destroyed city of Los Anglos lies.   The city is a dangerous place for anyone questioning the reverend and seems to have a perpetual food shortage despite being  the most central port in California .

Shannonsburg

A city set up by the Confederacy it has the lowest prices in the Maze, though the union tries to make it difficult for anyone who wishes to do business there the city is on the whole fairly successful.

Lynchburg

One of the more dangerous places in the Maze. The city has a official Hemp Committee and has earned it's name.   It's no high on the recommended place to go for a friendly visit.

37 th Chamber

The largest Shaolin temple in the Maze and The monks tend to be very secretive and speak in riddles.

Mantou Bluff

The most hazardous city in the Maze,   The citizens are reported to be crazed and blood.  Any form of law man ain't welcome and are libel to be made sport of and or tortured.   Torturing a Law Man is reported to be Mantou Bluff's local sport.

House Mechanic RulesWhen rolling a skill you add the number of dice in the skill to the number of dice you have in the attribute and all them all together.

CharactersCharacters will be taken through an un­sheeted prequel before play then their sheets written up with the help of the Marshal.   

After the official game start no new players will be excepted.

OtherNo arguments will be has with the Marshal during combat.   The Marshal reserves the right to change the rules as they see if to better suit the flow of the game.
