Unit 11: Computer Networks Task 2
Deadline: 31.10.16By Sarah Ameer
Describes the purpose of the new computer network
The purpose of the computer network is that they need computer equipment to sell new and used music to their customers in order to run their business. They don't have any and therefore customers can not use the business for their needs and it also won't make money without any equipment. The other purpose of this is that they want to be able to allow customers to download music and go online whilst in the store. Also they need to be able to provide classes on how to configure MP3’s and download music. The staff must be able to search for music, Manager has access to centralized printing, and also allow for one member of staff to set up users, and monitor and maintain the store’s computers and network.
List the user requirements:
First Music have asked me to build a network for their store. As well ass me offering classes on how to configure MP3 devices.
They als have asked me to include other things such as:
Customers being able to download music The staff must be able to search for music
The manager has asked for centralised printingOne member of staff will set up users, and monitor and maintain the store’s computers and
network The network must be cost effective
The store needs to have a suite of application software tools to effectively download music and facilitate management of the music and the music shop
The network must be secure.
It has been decided that the following are required for the computer network: Three high-spec computers - one computer to be used for sales and stock control, one
computer for downloading music and for use in the classes for people learning how to use MP3 players, and one computer to be set up in the manager’s office.
An operating system and application software. They will need at least five shared folders and seven shared files, with different access
permissions for different users. At least one shared hardware network resource, e.g. a printer, a scanner,
an external storage device.
Describe the role of the networking components and how they connect or communicate with
each other
Computer Systems: This consists of hardware components and software components that run in a computer. It is intended to be used for one person at time and is also connected to a LAN which can be used to run multi-user operating systems

Describe the role of the networking components and how they connect or communicate with
each other
Workstations: These are known as client computers and these allow users to log on to the network. Once logged in they are able to use software applications on their workstation. Each of the workstation connects to the rest of the network through a network adapter.

each other
Hub: This is box with ports for Ethernet cables. When data arrives at the ports, the hub sends it to all ports so that the data is present on all attached devices. This also connects networked devices together. Also if you purchase and 8 port hub this will allow connections for 8 computers.

each other
Switch: This is similar to a hub, but has better circuits. These type of circuits respond to the destination address when a packet arrives at the port. The packet is then routed through the switch to the port where the destination device is attached.Advantages:• Reduce Data Collisions• Improve Response Times.
Describe the role of the networking components and how they connect or communicate with
each otherFibre Optics: They use light to transmit data, they give
very fast connections over long distances, also they are used to connect switches together. There some
connectors that are used for fibre optic such as:FC(Fixed Connector): Telecom distribution and LAN
Closets.SC(Subscriber Connector): This is used for newer
network applications LC(Lucent Connector): this is a small fibre optic
connector that has a good performance.

each other
• UTP and STP: Ethernet is most modern used by networks with UTP and STP cabling. They both have a twisted pair of wires inside the cable
• STP has a thin metal sheet wrapped around each pair to shield from interface.
• Shielding in STP provides further connection and reduces interference as if in one wire can be cancelled by the other.

each other
Coaxial Cable: All parts of the cable share the same centre. Modern coaxials are used to connect to routers to optical broadband. This type of cable carry information over long distances.

Wireless: BluetoothThis is also a popular short-range and slow
radio transmission method that is used between mobile phones and other devices such
as computers

Wireless: narrow-band [single-frequency] radio)
This is one of several radio technologies that can be used to transmit computer data. LAN’s
mostly use Wifi for radio connections.Narrow band is a slower radio connection
which can connect up to around 3000 metres. This is 100 times further than most wifi systems
can manage.
List the software resources operating systems and applications needed:
Network Operating System:
• User Accounts:
They will be offered files and folders with permission settings, Remote Desktop and applications such as Youtube, File Converter, Etc.
• Permissions:
The user has an option to adjust their settings to certain files and folders who are allowed access to. They can download music but might be copyright so they might have to listen to it rather than downloading it as they may be prosecuted.
List the software resources operating systems and applications needed:
Network Operating System:
• Account Management:
Once an account has been setup with the network it is most likely to be set up with chrome so therefore when opening up the browser their account will be present.
• File/Folder:
In your account you will have access to create files according to your music. But the downside is that they may get lost. So when you have your google account you have google drive and their you can upload files as a backup in case something may happens the network.

List the software resources operating systems and applications needed:
Utility Programs: Internet browsers:These allow you to surf the internet. Examples such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer.Firewalls:
These prevent unwanted intrusions from the internet, Many professional networks offer a hardware firewall, This offers stronger protection than a software firewall can.
List the software resources operating systems and applications needed:
• Utility Programs: Remote Desktop:Users will have access to this when logged on to the system and the desktop will be different in terms of the user as they can adjust their settings.Backup:The Company will need to have an external storage which is separate from the location so that if anything happens to customers data, they can restore it and get saved from the law. E.g. The company will not get sued.
List the software resources operating systems and applications needed:
• Utility Programs:Email:This is essential as it is used to communicate with people inside and outside the organization. It has its advantages such as providing a list of everyone inside the company , which is useful for emailing someone who you don't know in the company. Anti-virus software:Administrators can easily set up protection on thousands of computers and able to receive notifications of threats.
The names and roles of the people that will be using the network:
• Manager-This is so that he can set goals for the company and can divide the work into equal parts.
• Finance Manager- That person will control the stock and sales of the music store.
• Employee- They will have a computer on giving lessons on how to configure MP3 players and download music.

A test plan and data which should reflect the ‘client’ requirements and give an outline of the range of tests that will
be performed.
Test Expected Outcome Results
Downloading Music The music will be downloaded with appropriate format, e.g. MP3/4
Login and password The administrator will see the user's login name and password
Access to personal folder This has to be tested by the user by opening up the file
Access to shared folder This is where the user clicks on the shared folder to access resources which other users access.
Check connectivity to printer
You can check it by printing a document
Check Remote desktop This can be tested when a user logins in and automatically a remote desktop[ appears.
Consider how the new computer network will be set up and configured, e.g. setting up IP addresses and subnet masks, and
different access permissions for individual or groups of network users.
IP Address and Subnet Mask: • You will first need to open the network and sharing
center• Then change adapter settings• Left-Click your local area connection and select
properties• Select internet protocol 4 and select properties • Then type in the correct IP address and Subnet mask
and default gateway with the network setup.• Enter in your preferred DNS server as well as the
alternative one. • Click validate settings and ok.• Then close out of the local area connection
properties.• Windows will then run network diagnostics to verify
the connection is good.• Lastly open up the command prompt and do an
ipconfig to see if the network adapter settings have changed.
An individual IP address will be set up for users as it authenticates the person on the receiving end. For e.g. if sending an email, the IP address can prove that is you who is sending the email.
Different Access Permissions: Some users may have different levels of access depending on their choice. For e.g. users who attend music class will not have access to sales and stock control.
For staff they may not have access to downloading music or have access to centralized printing.

Justify the final design decisions, explaining how the network design will fulfil the stated purpose
and user requirements
The network fulfilled the purpose for First Music Company. In Total I will have 8 workstations, with all of them connected to a star topology. There will be multiple ports in the switch so that there are seven shared files on the network.
The workstation will be connected to the server so that all computers will be backed up to prevent data loss and prevent prosecution. Also as they are connected to the server they are also connected to the printer. Also this network gives access rights to the network because remote desktop is installed as well as shared folders, login restrictions, and adding more users. There are also seven shared files on the network. Also users can download music as there is a youtube to mp3 converter.
Also there is also 3 high spec computers installed for the company as requested.
Consider the impact of the network constraints, e.g. hardware and software availability, and whether or not this will have an impact on developing the
computer network. If it does, consider any suitable alternatives for developing the same solution
Impacts:• The Music Network is not a WAN so therefore won't give
access to more shared files, web access, and lead to more software installation.
• It is more expensive but will help in the future.• Availability: This has to be accessed world wide so that
customers in other parts of the world can download music.• Speed: The speed has to be of a good connection, in order to
download music.
While designing your network consider some alternative designs e.g. variations of how the same network can be developed, either by changing
the physical or logical topologies or changing the network components.
My alternative design was to use a bus topology as it is easy to set up and add new devices, and also has a reliable connection.
But this design would not work as if one PC breaks down the whole entire network.
For space, my design was to keep all computers in one room but then that would be too crowded and may cause problems. So therefore by allowing different computers in different rooms this will be better for the shop floor and more efficient.
My other design which i chose first was to use a Hub but a switch does the same thing as a hub but is more intelligent so i decided to go with a switch in the network instead.
Explain why these alternative designs were rejected.
These alternative designs were rejected as:If we used a bus topology then if one node fails the whole of the network will fail.
If we use a Hub, then it will provide the same role as a switch, but won't be intelligent as to where to deliver the destinations of the IP Address.
If we put the manager's office near the front door, then there will be a lot of noise and the manager will not be able to concentrate.
If we put place to purchase the songs at the back of the store, then there will be alot of moving back and forth and also people may go into rooms which they are not
allowed to and the company may face charges.
