A Finer Point of View...Disaster and challenges bringout the best in mankind.

Just four years, ago September 11,2001, the United States was caught upin one of the most horrific acts everunleashed against an unsuspectingcountry. The premeditated andruthless attacks leveled againstinnocent people in New York, Virginiaand Pennsylvania will forever stand asone of the most hateful crimes everspawned by sick minds. It would giveus some comfort to think of thesepeople as insane, but it is even morefrightful to think that this is aprogrammed response to a lifetime ofhateful teachings. But hate andaggression from the worst of mankindwas overshadowed by the best ofmankind. Around the world candleswere lighted, American songs weresung in every language and for a briefmoment in time all the good peoplein the world stood up to be counted. Iremember a Canadian singing GodBless America, a German schoolgirlsinging a beautiful National Anthemand a Russian band playing patrioticAmerican tunes. The candlelightservices and memorials rose above thefeeble attempt to scare and intimidatefree people. Heroes arose from smoke,fire and ash. Death was everywhereand everyday heroes carried out thewounded and risked their own lives,even to the greatest sacrifice, givingtheir own. There is a famous passagethat reads: “Greater love hath no manthan this, that a man lay down his lifefor his friends.” How much greatermust that love of mankind be to laydown your life for a stranger!

This September, in the aftermath ofhurricane Katrina, we see a differentform of destruction but more of thesame courage and selfless sacrifice…individuals risking their own lives togo to the aid of people trapped,starving and helpless. This storm wasan act of nature, but the result waseven more devastating with a widerreach that directly affects millions.While the big picture of rebuildingand aid goes to Federal and Localagencies, the vast support and aidfrom everyday citizens isheartwarming… these people are theextended heroes of the Katrina relief.

Everywhere children and localcommunities reacted swiftly and withconviction to help people they didn’tknow. This says a lot for the averageperson. We will always see those whowould use the misfortune of others toprofit for themselves. Price gougingand looting is the dark side of anytragedy. To say these people should beashamed of themselves is useless, thatkind of person has no shame.Gratefully, these people are few incomparison, far outweighed by theoverwhelming legions of volunteersand contributors to the relief effort.

The events of 911 had negative impacton the financial world and nowKatrina will affect all of us in muchthe same way. Gas prices have soaredand this winter will find us dealingwith increases in heating costs, but thevery nature of man will help get uspast these problems as we all do ourpart in rebuilding of the gulf coastregion. Challenges do test the basiccharacter in us all, either in everydaycrisis or in a broader catastrophe.How we respond says who we reallyare. Today we look to help the victimsand find them new jobs and housing.I encourage everyone to do what theycan to help people get through thisand rebuild the communities struckby hurricane Katrina. This too is a waywe all show the basic good inmankind...

The Working MachinistAccording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2011 the American workforce willexperience the worst shortage of skilled workers in U.S. history. I know want they mean…

We all knew him… he’s retired now, trading in his worn wooden toolbox for a tackle box and afishing rod. Ah, but back in the day he was an icon of the working machinist. He always looked thesame, his faded green work shirt and matching pants were his uniform and the bifocals were alwaysperched low on his nose. He used an oil-stained scratch pad and a scarred yellow pencil to add andsubtract and the grit beneath his nails spoke volumes of the hours spent in honest labor. Today weare melancholy when we speak about him and our voice becomes almost reverent as we relate theway he could craft a new component or create an instrument from a simple piece of metal.Complexity was never an issue, just tell him what you needed and he could make it. Hand him adrawing or ask him to create it from thin air,no problem. He was a salty old white-hairedman with soft eyes and a stern conviction inthe way things should be done. No matterwhat type of grinder or lathe, he was onewith the machine. His skillful hands deftlyinterchanged the movements of handwheelcranks, using years of practical experience tocombine infeed, downfeed, crossfeed andtraverse to masterfully bring shape, precisionand purpose from raw material. As themachine hummed a cigarette hung from hislips with a burning ember of orange and hisbreathing generated a continuous swirl ofsmoke around his head. He squintedthrough the smoky haze watching his workand he could tell by the very sound ofabrasive against steel if he had the propercombination of speeds and feeds. Every nowand then he paused and measured his workwith an old micrometer, time worn withmany of the increments shallow from yearsof use. A calloused hand across the part’ssurface and he quickly calculated a final passthat would bring the desired finish. Hissenses were the tools of his trade. Only hiseyes could see the sparking wheel reflectingin the parts flawless surface and envision it’sfinal form. The old man could feel vibrationthrough the machines hand wheels and hiskeen hearing warned him of any change inthe rhythmic tones of his operation.

He was a machinist who took pride in hiswork. Every job was a tribute to his skill anddedication. He had little concern for taking abreak and his lunch may be cut short to getback to his craft or solve a problem. He wasan artist, an expert and one of many whoselegacy is the endearing memory he left withthose who followed.

Now he is gone and the loss continues. Asthe Baby Boomers retire over the next sixyears, our economy will lose an estimated 10million skilled workers. This shortage willcreate an unprecedented need for companiesto not only attract and train new craftsmen,but also create a wave of interest in the tradesfrom potential employees entering theworkforce. The Industrial DiamondAssociation has made a concerted effort towork with organizations and developprograms that will train an incomingworkforce with the skills and the dedicationseen in those craftsmen of days gone by.
