Lydia Ko MNZM   Lydia Ko added another special item to her trophy cabinet at Government House in Auckland earlier this month where she received her MNZM for services to golf.   She joined fellow sport stars, rugby player Dan Carter (ONZM), Team New Zealand's Glenn Ashby (MNZM) and boardsailor Barbara Kendall (CNZM) who also received Queen’s Honours.   “Obviously it’s a huge honour and I keep telling myself ‘I don’t know if I deserve to be here,’” smiled Ko.    “It’s something you don’t even dream of, so you can’t say it’s a dream come true, it’s just an unbelievable thing for me not only as an athlete but as a person and I’m definitely very proud to be standing here alongside these amazing New Zealanders.”  Congratulations Lydia – another amazing achievement.

Autumn Turf Notes for Administrators and Turf Practitioners  We are pleased to share the attached Autumn Turf Notes for Administrators and Turf Practitioners from our friends at the NZSTI.  New Zealand Golf was instrumental in establishing NZSTI in 1949. Since then, NZSTI has been New Zealand Golf’s official agronomy partner.   NZSTI is now in its 70TH year and continues to provide New Zealand Golf with golf course turf management advisory services for the benefit of golf club turf management staff, golf club administrators, golfers and other stakeholders.   In 2019, the golf course turf management advisory services provided to New Zealand Golf by NZSTI will include: 

Education via regional field days and Turf Management /Administrator Advisory Notes produced quarterly. 

Environmental Risk Management and Compliance resources for golf clubs to assist them with their environmental and land management obligations.  

Communication – developing a video library and other digital resources.    

New Zealand Golf Insurance Programme

LOVE Golf All Abilities 

This project is supported by Sport New Zealand and Halberg Disability Sport Foundation through No Exceptions Funding and is about creating greater awareness for golf as a sport of choice for young people, parents and adults with a physical or sensory disability and enriching their lives through the game.    Harewood Golf Club, Te Puke Golf Club, Remuera Golf Club and Mornington Golf Club are the first golf clubs to be involved in this project which complements our overarching LOVE Golf campaign to change the perception of golf and increase participation.    Each golf club aims to provide  

A welcoming and safe environment    Have a‐go‐days    Access to modified and adaptive equipment    Accessible facilities on‐course and clubhouse  Opportunities for coaching where activities and games can be modified to be inclusive and 

players can learn at their own pace   Playing opportunities and competitions where rules and course are modified for all ages and 

levels of ability

Promoting golf’s dual pathway where players can compete with able‐bodied participants.    

Harewood Golf Club had 7 participants come along to the have a go session last Sunday, with participants having a great time learning new skills, making new friends and looking forward to the upcoming six‐week programme.

 

Handicap Match Play and Where Strokes are Given   Since the introduction of the new rules this year there has been some misunderstanding regarding match play and where strokes are taken.  Since 1950, which includes twenty one updates to the Rules of Golf, it has been stated that in match play the lowest net score wins the hole. This has not changed in the new 2019 code and is covered under 3.2c(2)  For all those years the R&A had no involvement in handicapping and how strokes were to be disseminated, therefore we needed guidance on how strokes were to be taken. This is covered in the handicap system manual.  The interest in the new 2019 Rules of Golf has perhaps confused some, as the reference to the lowest net score wins the hole has been interpreted incorrectly. Many believe that there is an unwritten statement, declaring that we all play off our full handicap and then compare net scores. THIS IS NOT CORRECT.  As has been happening for many years, the lowest handicapper in the group, or the lowest of the two players in a match, play from scratch and the difference in the handicaps represents the number of strokes to be given. Using this method more holes will be halved, however if we play off our full handicaps, the better player will have an advantage. This is backed up with thorough research and continued analysis by the handicapping department at the USGAS.  The following is the correct procedure:  The higher handicapped player receives the full difference in course handicap between the two players; the lowest handicapped player plays from scratch.  

Tips for the Winter  For most of us our winter golf is going to be in challenging conditions. It might be the temperature, the casual water or the soft fairways, meaning the course is likely to play longer.  Our first recommendation regards course set up. Your course has been rated for conditions in spring and autumn, so if the ball is not rolling as far as usual, then move your tees forward. The objective is

to present a challenge as close to the course rating you have for each set of tees, so if that means moving the white tee markers closer to your yellow tees, then do so.  One of the most common local rules in golf is to allow preferred lies, more commonly referred to as “clean and place”. Whilst most clubs allow a 15cm relief area, there is a growing trend to increase this measurement to a one club length measurement. At all New Zealand Golf championships, when preferred lie is in use, we use a relief area of one club length. Most courses in the United States use this distance and if you follow the USPGA Tour or European Tour, you will note that they use one club length. So just as you are trying to help your golfers in the set‐up of the golf course, also consider this measurement. Another advantage is less ground under repair to be marked.   The correct wording for your local rule is:  Model Local Rule E‐3 (Preferred lie) "When a player's ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less (or general area if expanding the relief area), the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area: 

Reference Point: Spot of the original ball.  Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: [Specify size of relief area, such as 

one club‐length or 6 inches] from the reference point, but with these limits:  Limits on Location of Relief Area: 

o Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and o Must be in the general area. 

In proceeding under this Local Rule, the player must choose a spot to place the ball and use the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e. 

Stroke and Distance Local Rule Recommendation   When a provisional ball has not been played, significant issues with pace of play can result for a player needing to take stroke‐and‐distance relief for a ball that is out of bounds or cannot be found.  The purpose of the Stroke and Distance Local Rule is to allow a golf club or Committee to provide an extra relief option that allows a player to play on without returning to the location of the previous stroke.   This Local Rule is appropriate for general play where golfers are playing casual rounds or playing their own competitions. The Local Rule is not appropriate for competitions limited to highly skilled players (that is, professional competitions and elite amateur competitions).   Where a golf club or Committee has introduced such a Local Rule for general play, and removes it for competitions, it should ensure that all players are aware of this before play begins.   A golf club or Committee may introduce such a Local Rule for all play on the course or only for one or two specific holes where it may be especially useful (for example, where players are unable to see the landing area and therefore may not know whether or not to play a provisional ball).   This option allows the player to drop in a large area between the point where the ball is estimated to have come to rest or gone out of bounds and the edge of the fairway of the hole being played that is not nearer the hole.

The player gets two penalty strokes when using this relief option. This means that the relief is comparable to what could have been achieved if the player had taken stroke‐and‐distance relief.  This Local Rule cannot be used for an unplayable ball, or for a ball that is known or virtually certain to be in a penalty area. If a provisional ball is played and neither the original ball nor the provisional ball can be found, then the Local Rule may be applied for the provisional ball that cannot be found.  It is New Zealand Golf’s recommendation that the Stroke and Distance Local Rule is introduced for all play at golf clubs in New Zealand, with the exception of elite play.  

Elite play is defined as:

Interclub Pennant Competitions where play is ‘off the stick’ 

Club and District Opens  

National Championships  

While it is New Zealand Golf’s recommendation to introduce the Stroke and Distance Local Rule, it is still at the discretion of each District Association and individual golf clubs to introduce as and when they choose.  The effect the Local Rule will have on handicapping is minimal and it has no effect on a Course Rating.  New Zealand Golf does not interpret that qualifying competitions played at different clubs for a national event are played under different conditions.  A similar example of this is if some clubs have qualifying events using preferred lies and others do not.   The full wording for the new Local Rule is below.  It is New Zealand Golf’s recommendation that golf clubs do not use the full wording if they wish to put this on their scorecards.  If they do the following wording is recommended:  

‘The Model Local Rule for Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds is in effect for [insert hole or hole numbers if required].  The player may proceed under the Stroke and Distance Local Rule for a penalty of two strokes, rather than proceeding under stroke and distance.  This Local Rule is not available if a provisional ball has been played.  See Model Local Rule E‐5 for full details of the Local Rule.’  

Australasian Referees and Competition Management School  

  Earlier this month 49 referees attended the Australasian Referees and Competition Management

School at the Remuera Golf Club in Auckland.  The school is a joint initiative between New Zealand Golf, Golf Australia and The R&A which is held every two years.  The last school was held in Brisbane.   The delegates attended three days of classroom style presentations, outdoor practical sessions and the nerve wracking R&A Level Three rules exam.    Assistant Director of Rules at the R&A Shona McRae, Andrew Langford Jones and Graeme Scott of the PGA Tour of Australasia were special guest presenters, alongside Simon Magdulski from Golf Australia and New Zealand Golf’s own Dave Mangan.   A wide range of topics were covered over the three day schedule including the Art of Refereeing, Conflict Management with Tour Players, Local Rules, Course Marking, Starting and Scoring and pace of play.   In the exam seven of the delegates scored a distinction pass of more than 90% with another 11 recording a merit pass of 80% or better.  The next school will be hosted by Australia in 2021.  

Preserving the History of New Zealand Golf

New Zealand Golf is not only interested in preserving our organisations history, we would like to have a library of publications that may have been produced by our Golf Clubs.  

Following an email to Golf Clubs a few weeks ago, we have received publications from, Invercargill, Shandon, Northland, Tairua, Waihi, Muriwai, Maungakiekie and Waitomo Golf Clubs. We already hold history publications from Royal Auckland, Royal Wellington, Titirangi, Otago, Hutt and others, but welcome similar from any Golf Club.  If you have a publication celebrating the history of your Golf Club, New Zealand Golf would welcome a copy.   Preserving our history is an important part of our game and this would be very timely as we work on updating the history of New Zealand Golf.  Your publication, photos or material of interest can be sent to:  Phil Aickin New Zealand Golf c/o Remuera Golf Club 120 Abbotts Way Remuera Auckland 1050  

National Academy Selected for 2019   New Zealand Golf’s 2019 National Academy has now been named with a number of players gaining reselection along with some of New Zealand’s rising young talents being included.

The incumbent members who have been reselected include Daniel Hillier (Manor Park), Luke Brown (The Pines), Matt Mclean (Harewood), Kerry Mountcastle (Masterton), Caryn Khoo (Pakuranga), Juliana Hung (Russley) and Brittney Dryland (Titirangi).     The newly selected members include some familiar names with Kazuma Kobori (Rangiora), Carmen Lim (Windross Farm) and Vivian Lu (Royal Auckland and Grange) making the step up after a superb 12 months.    There are two distinct tiers within the National Academy. Tier Two is for players who have shown great potential but may still have some way to go before representing New Zealand at senior level or turning professional.  They have been identified as emerging talent but still have developmental gaps that need to be addressed while they strive to improve their on‐course performance’s.    A Tier One player has addressed the majority of their developmental gaps.  While they are still on their skill mastery journey, they have shown deep engagement in their programme and have a number of competitive performances that show evidence of this growing mastery. This evidence will likely include strong international performances.   This year also sees the naming of a New Zealand Golf Development Group.  This group is made up of Kevin Koong (Muriwai), Tyler Wood (Palmerston North), Jordan Woodall (Cambridge), James Hydes (Gulf Harbour), Charlie Smail (Walton), Mako Thompson (Maraenui), Darae Chung (Shandon) and Fiona Xu (Akarana).  While these players haven’t quite yet met the criteria for tier two, they are showing the potential to do so in the future warranting closer monitoring and support.   This group of players will be invited to attend NZG Training camps, will have access to New Zealand Golf’s national services provider network to assist with their programme development and may be provided opportunities to compete internationally.

National Academy Induction Camp, May 2019

Soon after the naming of the 2019 New Zealand Golf National Academy an induction camp was held at St Peters School’s Golf facility in Cambridge. This was a great opportunity for the group to train together following the Summer/Autumn season of golf.   While each player in the Academy has their own home based coaching team around them they also have access to NZG’s team of service providers. The camp gave each player the chance to check in with the NZG team, to work through their upcoming playing schedules and confirm their respective development plans.  Coming together also provided the chance for the players to further develop their own, and the groups, identify, in regard to how they see themselves and how they want to be recognised.  National Coach Jay Carter said “Setting high standards, both for themselves and as a group, is an important part of being an Academy member and representative of not only New Zealand Golf, but of their districts, clubs, family’s and themselves.  To purposely identify and then hold yourself accountable to a set of high standards, and the behaviors that underpin them, could just be the thing that propels a talented player toward true high performance, and therefore past others who are equally talented, but lack the structure, focus, dedication and determination to make the most of their talents”.  With the induction camp wrapped up a number of Academy members now head away for summer tournament campaigns in the Northern Hemisphere, we wish them well and look forward to following their progress.  Thanks must go to the attending players who gave 100% while at camp, and to our specialist service providers Jay Carter (National Coach), Bryce Hamer (Physiotherapy), George Wardell (Strength and Conditioning) and David Galbraith (Sports Psychology) who dedicate themselves to supporting others.     Thanks also to Drug Free Sport New Zealand for taking us through their athlete and support staff education module and to Eric Murray for spending time with the players, reflecting on his experiences and providing great insight to the life of a high performance athlete.  

Research to Help New Zealand become Pest Free by 2050   On behalf of NZ Golf Course Superintendents Association and NZ Golf Industry Council, we invite you to complete this short survey to help New Zealand become pest free by 2050.

We have the opportunity to get red if the pests from our courses and enjoy more birdsong too.  Working with DOC, local Councils and the NZ Predator Free Trust, the Golf Industry Council Inc. in conjunction with its member Associations, the Golf Course Superintendents Association and the Golf Managers Association, is looking at pest‐trapping programmes that each of us can implement. Some courses are already trapping pests. Some are not. Please help us get planning off to a good start by telling us where you are at by answering a few questions.”
