Scholarship

Thomas and Eyvette Hetherington have

and assist law students in successfully

Ron Bass Scholarship

The Ron Bass scholarship is given in

memory of Ron Bass, a solo practitioner

who had a strong belief in civil liberties

and a sincere interest in making a positive

difference in his clients’ lives. This

scholarship will be awarded to a continuing

student who shows a sincere interest in

civil liberties and/or making a difference

in others’ lives as demonstrated through

volunteer activities, coursework, and

other relevant factors, and is in need of

scholarship support for the continuation of

her education.

Helping the underserved is a value that

has always been important to Bob Sohns.

This scholarship is awarded to a student

Jackson Lewis Scholarship

Jackson Lewis is national law firm dedicated

to representing management exclusively

in workplace law and related litigation.

Claude D. Hippard ‘83 Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Claude D.

Hippard, a veteran federal prosecutor who

became a leading expert in forfeiture laws

and spent most of his career in the Houston

office of the U.S. attorney. The award is

given to a current second year student who

has outstanding moral character, financial

need, and demonstrates an interest in

government service.

In memory of Gil Epstein, a dedicated

David Toomim Endowed Scholarship

David Toomim began law school after a very

successful career in public accounting, but

he never would have been able to attend

college without a scholarship. In memory of

Institute, Inc. (TEI)

Tax Executives Institute, Inc. is a

professional organization of business

executives who are responsible for taxation

matters on an administrative or policy-

making level. The TEI Houston Chapter

a law degree focusing in tax, and who also

express an interest in pursuing a career

in the tax profession. Students who are

selected for this award must have good

academics and financial need.

Celia Figueroa ‘94 Memorial

Scholarship

The Celia Figueroa Memorial Scholarship

was established in honor of the late Celia

Figueroa by her family, friends, and

employer, BBVA Bancomer USA, for

whom she served as General Counsel. The

scholarship is awarded annually to a UHLC

student who has displayed excellence in

her studies and service to the Law Center

community. Preference is given to a 2L who

has family obligations and/or whose career

involves international business experience.

Immigration Law

This scholarship was created in memory

of Sam Williamson, a tireless advocate for

immigrants. His career spanned more than

five decades during which he fought fiercely

for the rights of his clients. It is awarded to a

student who is committed to the practice of

immigration law.

To honor the memory of Joseph Vail,

Director of the Immigration Clinic, this

Association (HIPLA) Scholarship

The Houston Intellectual Property Law

Association is an organization of Intellectual

Property lawyers and law student affiliates.

Through regular meetings, sponsored

CLE opportunities, and amicus briefs,

HIPLA promotes the development and

understanding of Intellectual Property

Law. These scholarships are awarded to

students who demonstrate interest in

intellectual property through coursework,

Awarded to the Law Center’s sole nominee

to a national scholarship competition

conducted by the American Intellectual

Property Law Education Foundation

(AIPLEF), an organization formed by the

nation’s preeminent IP bar organization,

the American Intellectual Property Law

Association (AIPLA). The scholarship is in

honor of the late Jan Jancin, who served not

only as President of AIPLA, but served with

distinction in several other leadership roles

within the intellectual property bar.

Award

The Ewer-Oren J.D. Health Law Writing

Award was established by Professor Emerita

Laura Oren in honor of two very special

people. One is Dr. Michael Ewer, Law

Center J.D. and LLM, Guest Professor at

the Law Center, Professor of Cardiology,

and Special Assistant to the Vice President

at M.D. Anderson hospital. The other is her

mother, the late Grace Oren, who dedicated

her career (paid and unpaid) to cerebral

palsied children. The Writing Prize is to be

awarded annually to a UHLC student who

has written the best research paper in the

field of Health Law.

Houston Bar Association - Real

Estate Law Section Award

The Real Estate Law Section offers monthly

lunch meetings with speakers presenting on

topics ranging from leasing, development,

loan transactions, landlord/tenant issues,

legislative updates and other relevant real

estate issues. The Section also participates

and contributes to several community based

fundraising campaigns. These awards are

presented to current law students who

demonstrate academic merit and an interest

in real estate law through coursework and

work experience.

The HBA Appellate Practice Section is very

by practicing attorneys in the Houston area.

Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in memory of

Judge Richard F. Pratt. The recipient must

important characteristic for an attorney.

Joan Garfinkel Glantz Civil Liberties

Scholarship

Joan Garfinkel Glantz was a champion for

civil liberties and devoted considerable time

and energy to organizations like the ACLU

that work for those whose civil liberties

are placed in jeopardy. This scholoarship

is awarded to a graduating student who

has worked extensively in the area of civil

liberties.

National Order of Scribes

Scribes is a national organization of legal

writers. The National Order of Scribes was

created in 2007 by Scribes as an honorary

organization to recognize graduating

Each year, the UH Law Center nominates

National Order of Scribes. These law

students demonstrate the highest levels of

professionalism and are outstanding legal

writers.
