June 2018 Volume 12, Issue 6

Dear CCU 'Ohana,

I love this poem by George Ella Lyon entitled "Where I'm From":

I am from clothespins,

from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.

I am from the dirt under the back porch.

(Black, glistening,

it tasted like beets.)

I am from the forsythia bush

the Dutch elm

whose long-gone limbs I remember

as if they were my own.

I'm from fudge and eyeglasses,

from Imogene and Alafair.

I'm from the know-it-alls

and the pass-it-ons,

from Perk up! and Pipe down!

I'm from He restoreth my soul

with a cottonball lamb

and ten verses I can say myself.

I'm from Artemus and Billie's Branch,

fried corn and strong coffee.

From the finger my grandfather lost

to the auger,

the eye my father shut to keep his sight.

Under my bed was a dress box

spilling old pictures,

a sift of lost faces

to drift beneath my dreams.

I am from those moments--

snapped before I budded --

leaf-fall from the family tree.

Coming back to this reminds me that we are each from many places and

things and communities which shape who we are and how we see

ourselves. I hope you know by now that we have a wonderful opportunity

this summer--in the form of our four Mālama interns--to reflect a bit on

where we're from and where we are going as we share our stories and

wisdom with them about what has shaped our lives as Christians.

This Sunday, the first week of June, we'll have the opportunity to hear

from each of the interns in worship about where they have come from and

where they are hoping to go ....in their professional lives and in their

journey as disciples. On this day and throughout the summer, we'll be

using the Genesis 1 text to reflect on our own experiences of emergence.

I and the intern committee are excited to have the interns' presence,

inquiries, vision and youthful energy in our midst. We hope this experience

might offer this congregation room to explore and envision where we are

going as a community and what experiences, skills, knowledge, and

2018 June Ka Elele Aloha Page 2 of 14

energy we may need to get there. I hope you'll come along for the journey

and engage these inspiring young people by showing your interest in their

story and by sharing yours as well.

Ultimately, what has brought us together after all is the belief that we all

originate in the great love of God and will return to that love in the end.

What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate that good news in new ways

with these new messengers sent into our midst by God's spirit.

With aloha,

Liz

Family Promise at CCU June 24-July1

Volunteers always welcome!

CCU continues it’s long time commitment to help families in need who are with

out permanent housing through the Family Promise of Hawaii program

(familypromisehawaii.org) from June 24 through July 1, with set-up on

Saturday, June 23 starting at 9 am. Our church becomes “home” for 2-4

families with children (up to 14 people) using the kitchen and upstairs lounge

and classrooms for living space.

The awesome CCU Summer Interns will be helping a lot with this host week,

but more volunteers are always welcome! We need help with set-up and

clean-up, laundry, providing meals and staying overnight with the FP

guests.

Please contact Pat Gilbert (254-3509) if you would like to provide a meal or

Beth Davidann (371-5594) if you want to help out in any other way.

"Give thanks in all circumstances."

1 Thessalonians 5:18

This month, we give a huge:

MAHALO to all who helped with CCU hosting the Eco-Stewards.

MAHALO to Ron and his facilities ministry. The cabinets in the sacristy help to

keep it organized.

MAHALO to the Mālama Intern Committee (Mary, Dwight, Lisa, Peter & Liz) for

organizing and getting the intern process started.

MAHALO to the Mālama mentors (Beth, Charlene & Susie) for volunteering

your time to the interns.

The mission of Family Promise of Hawai’i is to mobilize existing community

resources to aid families with children experiencing homelessness and help

them transition to sustainable independence.

Family Promise of Hawai’i is an innovative program to help families with

children escape homelessness by providing safe spaces. FPH provides a safe

space during the day at our two Family Centers, and partners with local

congregations, churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and community

groups to provide safe places to sleep at night. Founded in Hawai’i in 2006, we

opened up our first Family Center in Kailua, and then in 2007, we expanded to

our second Family Center in Honolulu. Due to our unique model, we operate at

1/3 the cost of traditional homeless shelter programs because we seek the

support of existing community resources. Read more at

familypromisehawaii.org/about-us/.
