Corrections from Last Newsletter

Jim Terry ’66 states “I really enjoyed the newsletter, BUT we graduated on May 29 not May 26 (I know because I was married the day after my last final on May 26).”

“Judy and I married in the Presbyterian Church in Greencastle (it has since burned and was rebuilt elsewhere in town). Max Hittle was my best man and John Pogue was one of the ushers. We had a two-day honeymoon at French Lick and were there for graduation. Judy was in the Class of 1965 and was working at Methodist Hospital at the time.”

The 50th Reunion Class historically plays a vital role in the University’s fundraising plan each year. It is our opportunity to collectively make a significant gift to DePauw to honor its legacy and to commemorate the benefits which the University has conferred upon us through the years.

Gifts from the 50th Reunion Class are calculated as 1.) The aggregate of our gifts to The Fund for DePauw (unrestricted annual gifts made between July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016) and 2.) The 50th Reunion Class Gift (which combines all giving since our 45th reunion including planned gifts, foundation gifts, matching gifts and this year’s gift to The Fund for DePauw).

A number of our classmates and members of the Steering Committee and the Fundraising Committee for the 50th Reunion have joined together to offer a matching gift challenge of $200,000 to our class for our gift to The Fund for DePauw. Such giving has encouraged us to set a total goal of raising $400,000 for The Fund for DePauw. As you may know, gifts to The Fund for DePauw support the ongoing operations of the university. The impact of this support touches every student and faculty member across campus. We hope each of you will consider making a significant gift to the University in support of The Fund for DePauw.

The second area of goal setting is the percentage of the class making a gift in this Reunion Year. The Class of 1966 reached its best giving percentage at our 40th Reunion when we hit 44 percent. This encourages us to consider a goal of at least “66” percent in our 50th! We hope all will join us as to achieve this goal. We look forward to June as we gather to remember, share our stories and give thanks for all DePauw has meant to us.

Remember DePauw in Your Estate PlanYour 50th reunion year is a perfect time to establish a planned gift –

through your will or another method – benefiting DePauw University. Gifts made in this way benefit The Campaign for DePauw and also add to the 1966 Class Gift total.

You can make a planned gift through:1) A simple bequest2) Beneficiary designation of life insurance, an IRA, or retirement plan3) A charitable gift annuity, which provides income for life and tax

benefits, while supporting DePauw

an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, where I’ve taught courses on entrepreneurship for four years.

Jim Thompson and I hold a Ryder Cup type golf tournament every spring and several DePauw classmates have played on our teams, including Tim Scott. I’m the proud grandfather of three girls, ages 4, 2, and 4 months and am lucky enough to live near them in La Jolla, Calif.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our reunion and reminiscing about the wonderful times we had at DePauw.

Sharon Kniebbe HartshornI attended DePauw freshman

and sophomore years – graduated from UCLA with a history degree and a fantastic husband – just celebrated 49 years together. We are blessed with an amazing family, three children, spouses and 11 grandchildren (ages 3-15) who love to travel and spend time together.

God has opened many doors along the way. Terry provided and I organized – ambitious, stay at home mom means an incredible life of serving in church, schools and non-profit boards.

Currently I sit on the Board of Directors of The Wooden Floor, a dance and mentoring program for underprivileged children (ages 8-18) in Santa Ana, Calif. Our tag

Jim BartlettAs a member of the Class

of ’66, I consider myself an enthusiastic alum of DePauw University.  Following graduation, it was my good fortune to marry fellow classmate, Sue Bartelsmeyer.  Shortly thereafter, Sue and I headed off to Palo Alto, Calif., where I had been accepted to the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  We just celebrated our 49th anniversary and have two children and four grandchildren.  Other than family, our interests include golf, reading, travel and, occasionally, a bit of poor quality bridge - at least on my part.

Following my graduation from Stanford’s business school, I began my career as a management consultant in the Denver office of Touche, Ross & Company.  In 1970, I joined Vail Associates, the owner/developer of the Vail Ski Area, initially as the Vice President of Finance and subsequently as the Executive Vice President of Operations.  Since leaving Vail Associates in 1977, I have been engaged in the development of resort communities throughout the Western United States.  These projects have been located in Colorado, Arizona, Texas and California.  For the past twenty years my time has been devoted to several upscale resort communities just north of Lake Tahoe in California’s northern Sierras.

Class of 1966 Fundraising Committee ProfilesI was a member of DePauw’s

Alumni Board from 1991 to 1997, and served as its president from 1995 to 1997. I have proudly served as a member of DePauw’s Board of Trustees since 1995.

Tom CooperAs a physician and healthcare

entrepreneur, I’ve started seven health service companies, four of which have become the largest in their niche-Spectrum Emergency Care, a national emergency physician company; Correctional Medical Services, the largest provider of healthcare to prisons and jails; MobileX USA, the largest provider of mobile X-Ray/EKG to nursing homes; and Spectrum Military Health providing civilian healthcare personnel to military hospitals and clinics (my students enjoy telling me what I did wrong on the companies I’ve started that have failed but I won’t mention those).

I currently serve on the boards of three public companies- Chairman of Hanger, Inc. (800 offices providing orthotics and prosthetics); lead director of IPC, Inc. (providing more than 2,000 hospitalists to hospitals and nursing homes); and Kindred, Inc. (owner and operator of long term acute and rehab hospitals, skilled nursing centers and the largest provider of home health and hospice). I also have served as

their schools and outside activities and sports. I have been active with two not for profit organizations: a preschool for working and student parents with a sliding fee scale and the Women’s Board of Abington Hospital. I have chaired many special events and served as chair of both boards. Now I have “honorary” status, but can still be as active as I want.

My second career was as the CFO (a title I created for myself ) for Bob’s practice. This part time position allowed time to continue my interest in bridge, tennis and recently golf.

Our children continue to be a joy, as well as granddaughters aged 11 and 14. And a baby will be added to the mix soon. Fortunately they are all within driving distance on the East coast.

I have been blessed with a loving family, supportive friends and community. Life is good!

Jim ThompsonFollowing graduation, I received

the M.D. degree from The Ohio State University where I met my wife of 47 years, Carol. We were blessed with four children who are now married and have given us 11 grandchildren. Carol and I enjoy daily devotions, golf, music and time with grandchildren. My college roommate and dear friend, Tom Cooper, played an important role in my family’s Christian faith.

As an Otolaryngologist I joined

“from here you can step anywhere” to break the chain of poverty.

My attachment remained with DePauw, serving on the Board of Visitors and the Board of Trustees, and now the Reunion fundraising committee.

Terry and I travel a lot – I organize. A lasting memory will be our family (all 19) trip to Italy and Spain last July. Utah has become home but kids and commitments in California and one family in Tennessee raise our frequent flyer miles. Golf continues to improve, wading a stream with rod in hand and fish on the line (nothing better), continuing piano lessons, a book in hand, time with friends and prayer, plus so many steps a day are part of my daily routine.

Look forward to speaking with many of you in the next few months and seeing all of you in June. Hurrah for “66” and reaching our goal of all in!”

Bonnie Stout LloydSoon after graduation I married

Bob Lloyd ’65, moved to Boston and worked in customer relations at New England Tel and Tel while Bob finished Dental School at Tufts. We moved with the Army and a pediatric dental residency prior to settling in Jenkintown, Pa. Bob practiced here until his unexpected death in 2014.

While our three children Christine, Gwynn ’94 and Andrew were in school, I volunteered in

the Wake Forest University faculty where I practiced for 23 years, seven of which I was dean of the medical school. During that time, I served as chair of the Medical School Section of the American Medical Association and represented the AMA on the Liaison Committee for Medical Education, the accrediting authority for all U.S. Medical Schools.

After Wake Forest, I served as President of the Federation of State Medical Boards, the membership association of all state medical boards that license physicians and regulate the practice of medicine. Following that, I was Interim President of the Medical College of Georgia. I am currently a consultant to health care organizations, coaching physician and scientist leaders.

I was honored to receive alumni distinguished service awards from DePauw University and The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Educator of the Year Award from the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and Exceptional Leadership Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

I look forward to returning to DePauw and being reminded of the times I enjoyed with classmates.

WANTEDAdditional reunion volunteers

to represent the following affinity groups: • WGRE staff • Sigma Delta Chi • Theta Sigma Phi • ‘D’ Association • Freiburg Group • Rector Scholars • ROTC • Men of Note • Collegians

Our goal is also to have two representatives for each fraternity, sorority and independent association. If you’re willing to contact anyone you lived with, played sports with, served on a committee with, or participated in one of the many clubs with, please email Tim Scott at [email protected] or Sherry Bockstanz Hughes at [email protected]. The University will provide contact lists for those interested.

We want to encourage as many people as possible to come back for our 50th reunion, so thanks in advance to all of our volunteers!

During our monthly conference calls as a steering committee, we have been brainstorming program ideas for our 50th reunion. We want to have a good mix of events – plenty of open time for fun with classmates and also organized programs with meaningful dialogue and reflection. Here is a glimpse of the plans we are working on:

1. Douglas A. Smith ’68, author of “The Art of Living with Peace, Confidence and Joy” will direct our thoughts and discussion on how we spend our days happily and productively. All of us on the steering committee were inspired and impressed when we heard Doug speak last June, so we invited him to lead one of our reunion programs on Thursday, June 9. It is our hope to provide each of you with his book prior to the reunion, so you will have an opportunity to review it before our discussion (no exams)! Even though we’ve been out of college for 50 years, we still have a lot of life and enthusiasm left in us!

2. A brief questionnaire is being developed for the Class of 1966 and your responses will give us the platform for a discussion on questions such as: What did we accomplish at DePauw? Were our lives enriched by the times we shared together from 1962-66? Would we want our grandchildren to have the same liberal arts experience that we had? Facilitating our thoughts will be Dr. Andrew Cullison, Director of the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw. Dr. Cullison is a 2001 graduate of DePauw and helps students delve into the subjects of ethics, critical thinking, character, leadership and citizenship.

3. Ken Owen, DePauw’s executive director of media relations, has spent 15 years writing about events and campus life at DePauw. He will be our special guest at lunch on Friday, June 10 for a pictorial narrative of “DePauw through the Years” with emphasis on OUR years at DPU.

4. You may recall several significant events while we were on campus and our nation was awakening from its slumber of racial inequality – the Civil Rights Act of 1964; the riots in Los Angeles and Detroit; and closer to home, the controversy over whether a black exchange student should have been permitted to live in one of DePauw’s sorority houses. On Friday afternoon, June 10, we’ll take a look at how DePauw participated in this important evolution over the years. Observations will be made by Renee Madison, Special Assistant to President Casey for Title IX and Diversity Affairs, as well as John Dittmer, Professor Emeritus of History.

Additional details regarding our 50th reunion celebration will be revealed in the coming months. In the interim, you can access a tentative schedule of events by visiting our class website at www.depauw.edu/alumni/classes/1966.

Remembering Our Time at DePauw

We’d love your help in collecting “I remember” statements to share with ’66ers in our future newsletters and/or on our class website. We bet you ’66ers have some great “I remember” statements just ready to pop and share.

Here are a couple of examples from members of the Steering Committee:• I remember when Liz W. and I bid

on a dinner in Indianapolis with Professors Roberts and Listerman. We were successful, had a wonderful dinner at King Cole’s in nap town and then they brought us home after hours and we were grounded for the next month!! (Sherry B. Hughes)

• I remember being fearful Dr. Compton would call on me during Basic Beliefs discussion groups and I would be tongue tied and not able to produce a relevant or intellectual thought. (Bobbie Bahler)

• I remember when Jim Thompson sang with the Lettermen at their campus concert. (Max Hittle) Here’s how to submit your

statements:1. Email Bobbie at bobbie.bahler@

gmail.com.2. Call our DePauw staff liaison,

Erica Riley, at 765-658-4255.3. Visit our class website at www.

depauw.edu/alumni/classes/1966.Here are a few rules:

1. Submissions must begin with “I remember” and be no longer than two sentences.

2. Committee has the right to eliminate “r” rated submissions.

3. Use discretion when your memory involves another classmate. OK, you have your assignment.

Now, remember to remember to send us your “I remember” statements.

Some things remain the same.3. Asbury Hall then and now

4. Harrison Hall then and now

5. Monon Bell then and now
