1. Key functionality of the application GeoMAHA.

User registration (by email) in order to gather hazard related data;

Hazard related events, linked to particular user registration (email), meaning one user canaccess all hazard related events from different mobile devises;

Map functionality, based on an Open Street Map background and integration of OGC WMS:one point layer service, one line layer service, one polygon layer service, one raster service;

“Show me” functionality for current positioning on the map display;

“Identify” functionality for identifying one or multiple hazard related events with access to adescription and photo information of the event;

Map legend - symbology display of all available map layers;

Report functionality - reporting predefined types of events (Flood, Fire, Landslide, Other),with a textual description and geotagged photos. Functionality for further editing of events,submitted by a particular user;

Weather information, based on Open Weather Map: one day and five days forecast, basedon the user current location;

Settings - advanced settings for the application fine tuning, including notification andprecision settings;

Automatic notification if the user enters within fire risk or flood risk area. This will alert theuser to pay more attention to the surrounding environment. (e.g. Lighting fire in a fire riskarea or fishing on a rainy day in a flood risk area);

Web map for visualization of all flood risk and fire-risk areas and the crowd-sourced data,accessible for the open public;

Web map, which can be embedded in the web site of the local river management authorityor another institution for alerts monitoring. E.g.: http://52.18.198.147/maps/8/embed .

2. Installation

Install the app from the following linkhttps://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw5fp_Ou_6L9Mm1qb2xWWjlVczg and follow the step bystep installation guide.

As the application is not on the official Google Play store yet, Android OS preventsinstallation from unofficial sources. Therefore you need to manually allow the installation ofthe application.

Download the file on the mobile device;

Install the *.apk file. (click on the provided *.apk file).

Place a check box under “Unknown sources”;

Click “OK” on the notification window;

Click next after you review the summary of the access information, needed for theproper functioning of application;

Click Install in order to install the application:

Installation is in progress;

Installation is successful and you can click “Open”;

Start background screen of the application;

3. Usage

The first tab is “User” and contains information, required for a user registration,acknowledgment and disclaimer, user related events.

User email registration is required only if the user would like to report hazardrelated events. The email will identify all events, belonging to the particular user. No emailinformation is shared or distributed to other users. Users can always delete theirregistration by clicking the “Clear” button. However user related events will not be deletedfrom the system as they might be useful for other users (citizens or institutions).

By entering a valid email and by clicking “Register”, the user is registered within the system.

Map tab

Map tab contains the key functionality of the application. Several buttons are located in thedrop down menu on the right side of the map window:

Show me functionality for current positioning on the map display.

Show hazards - performs a spatial check on the location of near by flood riskareas and fire risk areas.

Identify functionality for identifying one or multiple hazard related events andaccess description and a photo information of the event.

Map legend - symbology display of all available map layers.

Report functionality - reporting predefined types of events, with textualdescription and geotagged photos. Functionality for further editing of events, submitted bya particular user.

Weather tab

The weather tab contains information for the weather in the user’s location. The weatherforecast is organized in two sub-tabs: current daily forecast and 5 days daily forecast. Theinformation is important if the user is about to visit a flood risk area in a stormy weather or firerisk area in an extreme heat.

Settings tab

New Events Notification - switch On/Off of automatic notification for flood andfire related hazard zones;

Watch for position - switch On/Off for constant check for user location;

Watch frequency, msec - frequency to check for user location;

Use high accuracy - setting for usage of GPS only or with wi-fi/mobile networklocations. Switch off option: uses mobile network/wi-fi network. Switch on option: uses GPS;

Watch for a position - ask for geolocation when necessary;

Location call timeout, msec - timeout time for the application to receive thegeolocation. If this time is exceeded there will be a timeout error;

Cached position maximum age, msec - if the GPS has determined a location foranother application this is the maximum age for the geolocation, which the currentapplication is going to use;

Distance between checks, km - distance in km between two notification checks;

Registered User tab

Once the user is registered and has entered some hazard events, the same events are linked tohis email registration and can be accessed and reopened from the Users tab. The user can viewand edit only the events he has entered. The user can view and identify events by other users.

Notification

Users will receive automatic pop-up notification once they entered a fire risk area (based on Fire

Users can adjust the frequencyof the notification from the settings tab or switch off the notification (e.g. Automatic check onevery 1 km. or more/less - this means that after the initial notification the user must move awayat least 1 km, before to receive second notification).

Web application

Users (citizens or institutions) can access the results of the crowed sourced data in a web mapapplication, accessible on:

The web map application can be embedded in the institution web site for constant monitoringof hazard related events.

4. Data sources

Weather data is based on http://www.openweathermap.org/.

Base map data is based on Open Street Map on https://www.openstreetmap.org/.

Web map service (WMS) of European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) portal1:

Web service name: fd_mf10_fwi_0.

The service is not displayed in the web map as it is quite heavy to load and visualize. Howeverspatial checks on a pixel level are performed to identify if the user is within fire risk area.

Flood areas data, identified under EU Flood directive, prepared and reported by each EUmember state in form of “Areas with potentially significant flood risk - APSFR”.
