Q: Why THE GREAT CHICAGO QUIZ SHOW?

Baer: I really love shows that inspire the audience to actively engage with us. And a quiz show is the ultimate! It’s about as interactive as we can get on TV. I really hope viewers at home will be shouting the answers at their TV screen, trying to beat the contestants to the punch. And there will also be quizzes on the website so everyone can be a contestant!

Q: How were the contestants chosen?

Baer: We put out an appeal on social media for people to send us 30-second video “auditions” offering their Chicago cred and explaining why they would be perfect for the show. The auditions were AMAZING! Some people created quite highly produced videos with graphics and photos. Others just talked, but their passion and their sense of fun was so compelling. We also brain-stormed people we know personally whom we thought would be great contestants. And we sprinkled in some local celebs, including Second City veteran George Wendt, who played Norm on the sitcom Cheers, and famous Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco.

We asked host Geoffrey Baer and producer Eddie Griffin for the scoop on how the show came about, what happened behind the scenes, and to give us some prep questions.

Griffin: I hope I’m not crushing anyone’s dreams here, but we never intended to cast contestants who were obvious triv-ia experts. The heart of the show is not scoring points or following strict game shows rules – it’s the personal interaction between Geoffrey and the contestants. We wanted to find warm characters with big personalities, charm, and wit. The au-dience will tune in for the trivia and knowl-edge, but hopefully they stay because they’re enjoying the contestants.

Q: Any favorite or funny stories from filming?

Baer: The way we made this show is unlike anything I’ve done before. I host the show in front of a green screen in our studio and all the contestants appear from their own homes via Skype. A lot of the show in-volves my improvised (and hopefully enter-taining) banter with the contestants, but of course as we all know from endless Zoom meetings that there is that annoying little delay. So it was a constant challenge not to step on the contestant’s next thought or kill a really funny punchline by cutting them off too soon. And what a bunch of characters they were! From a Chicago-born Hollywood producer who now hosts a podcast about sex, to a South side fa-ther who creates Chicago history videos on TikTok to educate his kids through their preferred platform. We learned that the well-known University of Chicago social scientist Eve Ewing has a side job writing the Marvel Comics character Ironheart. And a woman in Bridgeport rolled up her sleeve and showed us a tattoo of the CTA ‘L’ system map on her arm – she got mar-ried on a chartered ‘L’ train. We met a food writer who eats bugs, a professional clown who cheers up hospitalized kids, and a guy who drove one of the buses in the Chicago Cubs post-World Series parade.

Griffin: Some of the best moments in the studio were when the show went off script a little. Prior to filming George Wendt, I

would never have imagined that he and Geoffrey would both end up doing the Lightning Round in an SNL “Super Fans” thick Chicago accent, but “dat’s where it went, my frendt.”

Q: How difficult are the questions? Do you have to be a trivia super nerd to get them right?

Griffin: You know, some of the questions are difficult, I have to admit. There were

plenty of answers I didn’t know prior to pro-duction. But I think the mark of a good triv-ia game is making sure the players can at least get in the ballpark with their answers. There’s no fun in stumping your contes-tants, but you also don’t want to throw softballs. There’s a fine line in creating that balance. If any of our questions seemed to be on the tougher side, we gave Geoffrey creative license to drop some hints.

training. And there is a historical plaque and a sculpture there called “Pillar of Fire” by Egon Weiner. In 1997, Chicago City Council Committee on Fire and Police held a special hearing in that building and officially exonerated Mrs. O’Leary and her cow.

From the CSO’s Archives: The First 130 YearsThis month, the series celebrates some notable birthdays: Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875), Bernard Haitink (March 4, 1929), Bela Bartok (March 25, 1881), and Pierre Boulez (March 26, 1925). On the 2nd, the Ravel-Haitink broadcast will feature the conductor’s recording of Ravel’s complete ballet Daphnis and Chloe, and on the 9th, we mark Women’s History Month with violinist Kyung-Wha Chung, cellist Jacqueline du Pré, soprano Lucia Popp, and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, plus compositions by Shulamit Ran and Augusta Read Thomas. On the 16th, hear a compilation heralding the return of spring, and on the 23rd, hear a Boulez-Bartok program featuring violinist Gil Shaham. Finally, on the 30th, the spotlight will be on the musicians of the orchestra.

In the Spotlight

From the Metropolitan OperaThe production of Bizet’s Carmen from 2014 stars the Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role; she had made her Metropolitan Opera debut in the same role three years earlier. Critics of this production singled her out for praise, along with the Romanian-born soprano Anita Hartig as Micaela, and the conducting of Pablo Heras-Casado. About the production, they noted stark sets and a general ambience of violence, with no moves to glamorize the supposedly “colorful” lives of gypsies, smugglers, and toreadors. The cast also stars Aleksandrs Antonenko as Don Jose and Ildar Abdrazakov as Escamillo.


Music of the Baroque 2021On February 28, Music of the Baroque performed a virtual concerto program at Skokie’s North Shore Center led by violinists Kathleen Brauer and Kevin Case. Focusing on compositions written for pairs of soloists, the concert featured Bach’s popular Two-Violin Concerto in D Minor, composed around 1730 for the concerts of Leipzig’s Collegium Musicum; Vivaldi’s Two-Violin Concerto in A Minor; Handel’s Concerto grosso in E Minor, Opus 6/3; and Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto grosso in F, Opus 6/2. New from the Ravinia FestivalThe Highland Park Strings, now in their 41st year, devote most of their seasons to free concerts underwritten by the Highland Park Park District, the Community Foundation, and the Negaunee Foundation. With live concerts off the table right now, the group performed for Ravinia and WFMT’s series of events from Bennett Gordon Hall. For this performance, they were joined for two Winter concertos (by Vivaldi and Piazzolla) by the Indian-American violinist Maya Anjali Buchanan, winner of the 2017 CSO Young Artist Competition. Also on the program are a string divertimento by Mozart and Elgar’s Serenade for Strings.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic in ConcertThe Korean-born composer Unsuk Chin, who won the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in 2004 for her violin concerto, composed SPIRA on commission from the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2019. She describes it as a concerto for orchestra. For this concert, it was contrasted with more traditional fare: Debussy’s La Mer, and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto which featured as soloist the Moldovan-Austrian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, a composer herself as well as a performer. Conducting this unusual program was Lithuania native Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, a former Gustavo Dudamel Fellow.

From the Metropolitan OperaThe Metropolitan Opera in 2013 presented a Rossini rarity: Le Comte Ory (Count Ory), which the composer created in 1828 using some music resurrected from an earlier Italian comic work, Il Viaggio a Reims. One oddity of Le Comte Ory is that it is set in the Middle Ages with a Crusade as a background element. Some of the men left at home, led by Count Ory, decide to romance the temporarily spouseless women taking refuge with Countess Adele by disguising themselves as…nuns. Tenor Juan Diego Florez took the title role, and this production also marked the company debut of the South African-born soprano Pretty Yende as Adele. Also starring was Karine Deshayes in the pivotal trousers role of Isolier, the count’s page.

From the Metropolitan OperaIn 2012 Sir Andrew Davis, music director at Lyric Opera of Chicago, conducted this performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera. His stellar cast was headed by Gerald Finley in the title role and Bryn Terfel as Leporello, the Don’s often-reluctant servant. The Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka portrayed the wronged Donna Anna, and her devoted lover, Don Ottavio, was played by Ryan Opera Center alumnus Matthew Polenzani. In the role of the also-wronged Donna Elvira was Ellie Dehn, and Isabel Leonard portrays the bride, Zerlina, who successfully avoids him.
