This is the last Mercy Voice for the term as the College closes for the two week winter break today. We cele-

brate all that has been accomplished in the classroom this term and Academic Reports were posted this week for the junior classes. It has also been another busy

term of great achievements in sport, drama, music and debating. Remember to go through the Report with your daughter

acknowledging all of her accomplishments, with special praise for her homework, behaviour and effort. The grades in these columns tell you much more about your daughter than the academic grade does. P&F TRIVIA NIGHT What a great night of fun, laughter, silly games and prizes. It was wonderful

to see so many staff and parents there enjoying each other’s company. Be-sides the fun and laughter, the function raised just under $10,000 which will be going towards air conditioning in the classrooms.

It was such a great success, that it will be featured in the calendar for next year, so start memorising those trivia facts. THE AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION AMENDMENT BILL As you are all aware this Bill was passed by the Parliament on 23 June 2017 with amendments which addressed the most serious concerns that would

NSW CCC Cross country Last Friday, 16 June, 3 students represented Broken Bay (BBSSSA) at the NSW CCC Cross Country Event at Eastern Creek. Tessa Mc (Yr 11), Lucca M (Yr 7) and Jessica N (Yr 7). They all ran exceptionally well, and are to be congratulated on their performances, with Jessica N placing 2nd in the 12 Year Girls 3km event. This means she progresses to the NSW all schools event to be held at East-

ern Creek next term. Ms J Knapinski BBSSSA Co-ordinator

Dear Ms Kavanagh, I would like to let you know that my colleagues and I were very impressed with the girls from Mercy on Tues-

day. They were very helpful and worked hard all day. I would also like to mention one young lady who stood out for me. Her name is Maddie and she is in Year 11. I was in charge of a team of junior boys and unfortunately for them, I know nothing about Netball. She umpired their first game and it was very apparent to both of us that they knew nothing as well. She volunteered to coach

them between games and she umpired for us. By the end of the day, the boys had really honed some of the skills she had taught them.

Maddie went well beyond the call of duty and I would appreciate it if you could pass on my sincere thanks to her because I missed saying goodbye at the end of the day. She is a fantastic advertisement for Mercy College. Yours sincerely,

Message from the Religious Education Co-ordinator

I am delighted at the interest that students in Year 9 - 12 have shown in attending the Australian

Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF). Registration and permission notes

are now available to be collected from Mrs Thomas. The $250 cost of

registration and permission notes must be submitted to Mrs Thomas

by Friday 28 July to secure attendance at the festival. Please contact

Mrs Helen Thomas or Ms Gabie Stojanovski for further details.

The Alpha Youth Program began on Wednesday 21 June with 12 students from Mercy College and St

Pius X College. The session started with a lovely afternoon tea, followed by icebreakers so that stu-

dents could get to know one another. The first topic was “Life: Is this it?” Students watched an en-

gaging video presentation which included break-out segments for thought provoking discussion

questions. Students had the opportunity to share questions, enter into conversation and draw per-

sonal meaning from the discussion.

The Alpha Youth Program is an amazing opportunity for students to build relationships and explore

their Christian faith and ask the big questions they have about life. It is not too late to join the pro-

gram. The second session will be held on Wednesday 19 July at 3:30pm in the Bishop Barry Room

located on Kirk Street.

Please contact Ms Gabie Stojanovski for more details on

how to join the program.

Message from the Director of Student Wellbeing

On Wednesday period 2 the school did the Let’s Move as part of the new RISE wellbeing program.

It was a wonderful way to engage all the school community and end the term. The best way to reflect on

the start of the program is to read some quotes and reflection from a few students.

I think it was nice to see the whole school community coming together and having fun with each other, it

was a nice break for everyone to be active with their friends away from school work.

Ashleigh School Vice -Captain Year 12

I think today was an amazing opportunity for the whole of Mercy to come together as a school community

and not only be active but also have a lot of fun and have a good laugh! It is definitely a school experi-

ence I won't forget and something I will look back on when thinking about my time at Mercy. Overall it

was great seeing the whole school join together and participate in 'Let's Move'.

Brianna Year 11

The Let's Move activity that was a part of the Rise program was really fun and unique, compared to any-

thing we've done before. The Mercy community was able to gather and bond and it was great to see eve-

ryone get involved and enjoy themselves, especially the teachers! It raised awareness for an important

issue, by everyone getting physically involved. Overall, the activity resulted in lots of dancing, laughs and

smiles and was something different for the students to experience and be a part of!

Ella Year 11

I thought the let's move dance was such a good experience. It was a wonderful opportunity to have a

laugh with my friends but also get fit. I enjoyed it so much the first time I went and learnt it at home for

fun and also to impress my friends :)) I had a great time doing this and recommend everyone to get in-

volved.

Hannah Year 9

The dance was a great way to let out any end of term stress and help me think of dancing, moving my

body, getting fit and active and stop worrying about the looming English and Food Tech Assignments that

were coming up. Dancing left me feeling energetic and made me feel ready to do more exercise and fresh

for the rest of the day. Dancing with the whole school made me feel more part of the community and I

loved seeing the teachers dancing their amazing dance moves.

Angela Year 9

I thought that the dance experience with Mercy was a fun way to engage with other students as well as

interact as a school community. It was also a fun way to engage in physical activity and get away from

the stress of exams and schoolwork. I really enjoyed the laughs that we experienced in the dance with the

Year 12 leaders.

Over the Holidays

At the end of a term it is very natural for your daughter to feel tired and be wanting more sleep. It is also

very normal for your daughter to be wanting to watch endless Television/ Netflix/Youtube, movies and

DVDs. Knowing there are some shows on Netflix which are quite controversial, can you discreetly monitor

what your daughter and friends watch. Holidays should be a time of joy and relaxation. Both my daugh-

ters are overseas, which means I am really missing being with them on the lounge, watching movies and

talking and laughing about silly things. Make time with your daughter, sit with her, watch movies or take

her out to a café. Enjoy these special moments.

If your daughter is in Year 12, she will be studying over the holidays. Make sure she does take some

time out and get fresh air. I spoke to Year 12 last week about working out a good study program for the

holidays. Your daughter may decide to have the first four days off to rest and renew, this is fine. Some

days will be more productive than others, which your daughter has to work out and be happy with, as a

parent provide the food and continue to encourage her and praise her for what she has achieved.

Though it is holidays please ensure your daughter does sleep well and eat well. Getting too many late

nights will make it hard on your daughter in getting back to a scheduled timetable when she returns to

school. Try to stick to an agreed nightly hour to get to bed. Encourage her to read in bed instead of using

any devices.

Holidays is a wonderful time to refresh, relax and be happy. I wish you and your family a wonderful holi-

day and look forward to seeing your daughter in Term 3.

A McAuley Dynasty Begins

After the Council decided to renovate the regular athletics facility, the annual Athletics Carnival was

forced to relocate to Bannockburn Oval in Pymble. A cracking day of sunshine greeted the students as

they began their House Cheers at the College. An array of red, white, blue and gold performers

danced, sang and laughed their way to a very creative and well-choreographed routine. Stormanston

just pipped Coolock with a dynamic performance that earned them the first win of the day.

After students were transported to the oval, all keen young women had the opportunity to participate

in the 1500m Walk which was a great warm-up for the day. Championship events soon began with

shot put, discus, javelin and long jump attracting big numbers. Additionally, the 100m participation

from both Championship runners and also from those wishing to earn a House point was admirable.

Throughout the carnival, 14 records were broken and 7 new records were set. Sophie R (Long Jump),

Hannah M (Javelin, Discus, Shot), Natasha L (Javelin), Cassandra K (Javelin), Olivia T (3000m), Imo-

gen S (3000m, 1500m Walk), Ainslie B (1500m Walk), Jessica N (800m, 1500m), Lucca T (1500m)

and Sofia S (800m) were all outstanding and successfully broke their respective records. Furthermore,

Lauren B (Shot Put, Javelin, Discus), Taylah L (Shot), Oona S (Shot), Alexandria W (Long Jump) and

Olivia T (1500m Walk) all set new records for events without existing qualifying times and distances.

With regards to the overall winner, it was once again too close to call on the day as final events were

still being calculated well-after students had been dismissed from the grounds. However, for the sec-

ond year in a row, the Champion House was awarded to McAuley. Their track events were considerably

more successful than other Houses and it was these points that proved to be valuable in their overall

success. With the mighty green team taking out 2017 bragging rights, Coolock finished a close second

with Stormanston and Mercy rounding out third and fourth place respectively.

All students are to be commended for their involvement and participation throughout the day and it is

a credit to you that the carnival was both enjoyable and competitive. A massive thank you to the staff

who ensured all events ran successfully, the carnival was a success because of your effort. Also, spe-

cial thanks must go to the committed PDHPE staff who were the backbone of the carnival’s organisa-

tion and implementation.

Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter in the Resource Centre

It was with much surprise that we discovered recently that Monday June 26 marked the twentieth

anniversary of the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and with much excitement

that we agreed that we couldn’t let this occasion pass without celebrating it. After weeks of plan-

ning, so began Harry Potter week in the Resource Centre.

The anniversary kicked off with our own take on Pin the Tail on the Donkey, as we played Pin the

Scar on Harry. Students and Teachers alike were blindfolded and spun in circles before being

placed in front of a giant Harry Potter picture to try their luck. Harry’s scar suddenly turned up in

the night sky next to him, on his broomstick, or in various other positions on his head, different to

its usual location.

In addition to this, students could be seen excitedly roaming the Resource Centre in search of the

Harry Potter characters who had spread themselves around the space, as they took part in our

guessing competition to name the Harry Potter characters. The frustrated mumbles of “I know

who they are but I just can’t remember their name” rumbled around the Resource Centre space.

No doubt these names would suddenly come to the students three or four hours later when they

were least expecting it!

Our crowning glory for the week happened on Tuesday at lunchtime, when we ran our Harry Pot-

ter Trivia Challenge. Students and Teachers were sorted into their Hogwarts House by the Sorting

Hat and joined their housemates to test their Harry Potter knowledge. Amongst the crowd was a

costumed Gryffindor student, robes and all, who bore a slight resemblance to Mrs Thomas! The

Trivia eventually came down to many tiebreaker questions to attempt to break the deadlock be-

tween Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, with Hufflepuff just sneaking over the line at the end.

Most memorable in our Harry Potter week was the remarkable display and decorations created by

Mrs Ramos, whose efforts provided us with an enchanted candle ceiling, broomsticks and a Quid-

ditch game in the Resource Centre.

The Resource Centre has definitely been the most magical place to be in the College this week, to

the delight of both students and staff, and our Harry Potter week was enjoyed by all.

Debating

We have had a couple of very busy weeks with debating, as we progressed into the elimination rounds of

the CSDA competition. The standard of debating increased as we came face to face with teams who had

also successfully competed in the preliminary rounds, losing none or only one debate. The energy among

our debaters increased and nerves were on edge. We have some great news to report.

Our Year 10 team out-debated the Santa Sabina team at the Quarter Final held at Santa Sabina College

last Friday. They had the task of proving that free speech was more important than politeness. Sarah B,

Vanya D’S and Claire F are laudable speakers who fluently argue a sophisticated case. Their polish and

thorough refutation continues to be their debating strength. They are through to the Semi Finals and are

therefore one of the top four teams in the whole competition.

The Semi Final is on July 21. Year 10 team will debate against St Ursula’s College B team at St Clare’s

College, Waverley at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend and support this team.

The Year 8 team had a fast-track to the Quarter Final, where they faced Loreto Normanhurst held at St

Patrick’s Marist College Dundas, last Friday. Their topic was that celebrities make good role models. They

were affirmative and found it difficult to counter attack the powerful opposition with effective examples. It

was pleasing to see Sophie L, Sophie S and Genevieve O’B employ their fluent manner in an entertaining

debate. Caitlin Webster is also a debater in this team and was designated chairperson on the evening.

Unfortunately, the talented Year 9 team was defeated in the First Elimination Round debate against

Montgrove College as they struggled to argue against the motion that charity should start at home. These

girls have grown in their strategy and have strong skills. We congratulate Betsy W, Louise F, Isabella S

and Felicia L for their third season together, and the third time in the finals.

The debaters would like to thank the parents and students who come to support them on a Friday night.

They would particularly like to thank Ms O’ Halloran, Mr Lijic who attended the Year 10 Quarter Final last

week. Also, many thanks should be extended to Ms Brandwood for her commitment to adjudicating and

coaching.

Music

Congratulations to the Mercy College Chamber Choir who progressed from their heat in the City of

Sydney Eisteddfod (Youth Chamber Choir) to reach the final of the John Lamble Australasian Choral

Championship. The competition was held in the beautiful auditorium at Sydney Grammar School

and featured nine selected choirs from heats across the Eisteddfod.

Our Mercy girls performed three works, one being a mandatory work by an Australian composer.

The adjudicator was impressed with our consistently bright even vocal tone and energy given to the

musical style. It was indeed a marvellous opportunity for our students to compete against many es-

tablished high calibre choirs and in such a prestigious competition. Staff at Brigidine were so im-

pressed by our performance they have requested to collaborate with our girls on future choral pro-

jects. The choir will now focus on the learning of new repertoire and work towards preparation of

their performance item for the annual Creative Arts Showcase evening

Year 8 Italian Day

Una perfetta giornata italiana a Mercy!

Seventy enthusiastic students participated in the Year 8 Italian Day on the 13th of June at Mercy

College. This was the first edition of our Italian incursion dedicated to the Bel Paese. The purpose

of this event was to give students the opportunity to experience and enjoy authentic aspects of the

Italian culture and language.

The Italian Day started with a series of activities such as a game of tombola and a cultural trivia on

Italy and Italian society. Students also showed their dramatic talents and Italian diction, acting out

a short skit. After lunch, dulcis in fundo ("the sweet come at the end" or "last but not least"), the

Giornata Italiana continued with the “sweet” visit of an authentic gelataio and ended with students

making bomboniere.

The Venetian ice cream maker Luca Zanini from Gelateria Gondola in Chatswood came to share his

knowledge of gelato making and answered the many questions asked by curious students who then

tasted the three delicious flavours, limone, frutti di bosco and cioccolato, prepared for this occasion

by the Italian artisan.

The final treat of the day was the making of bomboniere. A bomboniera is an object typically offered

to guests at special celebrations such as First Communion, graduation and weddings. It is usually

packed together with sugared almonds of different colours. Student created their own colourful

bomboniera to mark this special day, and the prize for the best ones was a small wooden Pinocchio.

All the activities created by the languages staff were very well received.

“The day was extremely fun and it was really beneficial to work with the other classes to aid our

Italian to be more fluent. I also liked that we got to learn about Italian culture” - Anastasia

“The Italian Day was fun and exciting” - Mikaela

We hope to repeat this event next year, taking into account the valuable feedback and suggestions

given by students. Looking forward to another fantastic edition in 2018.

**Basketball 2017 - Final update for season 1

Last Friday 23rd June Mercy Wildcats played in the semi finals at Crows Nest. Both Margaret Kellendonk

and I attended the game and witnessed the girls playing an amazing game . There was great team

work throughout the game and the girls never gave up , there was only a 3 point difference at one

stage . Congratulations to them all for doing so well and we wish them Good Luck again for the second

comp starting in July.

Sharon Houston

Basketball Convenor

After winning the U14 Div 2 competition last year the Mercy Wildcats had a big step up this year by be-

ing placed in the U16 Div 1 as one of the bottom age teams.

After suffering a couple of 30 point plus losses at the start of the competition it was looking like a long

season ahead.

With the early losses behind them, the girls worked hard at training on getting some set plays happen-

ing as we could no longer just turn up and play, we needed some tactics. Some of the training turned

up on the court now and then, and along with the girls determination it was enough to win most of

their remaining games – with tense games and very close games along the way, which had them finish

3rd on the ladder.

But they saved their best performance for last, facing a team that beat them by 34 points at the start

of the season. Although the result was not a win - the way they played as a team and the great atti-

tude they brought to a tough game, did themselves, me and the school proud - we went down by 7

points, but it was by far the best game of the season. Well done Wildcats!

Trivia Night

This was a wonderful night and many thanks to Nicole Clancy for her preparation and attention to de-

tail. Also thanks to Meredith and Naina for collecting prizes and auction items.

The night was full of laughter and friendly competition. Two of the highlights were teachers attempting

to recite the school song and the aeroplane throwing competition (see photos). Special mention for one

teacher table with the ‘brain’ fancy dress costumes – though sadly it did not enhance their final score.

The P&F and school community are very grateful to the MCC families who donated products or services

from their business or made a financial contribution for us to silent auction items. The event was pri-

marily to provide an opportunity to build friendships in the MCC community, however we are grateful

for your generosity.

Thank you to those families who purchased the silent auction items and congratulations to those who

I would like to convey my thanks to the many parents who rallied for re-consideration of the proposed

changes to school funding by the Federal Government. Some success was achieved as outlined in the

letter we all received from Peter Hamill, Director of Schools, Broken Bay Diocese. Well done.

I wish you all a happy and safe break from school.

Please feel free to call me at any time if you have any questions or would like to provide ideas or feed-

back.
