Dear Parents and Friends

Last week we conducted our Senior Leaders Investiture Ceremony. It was a very special occasion for our Corinda families and even more special having our Guest of Honour Dr Stephen Lundin join us to provide inspiration for our students. Congratulations to all students who have been selected for leadership positions across the school – I wish you all well in your journey and look forward to working with you all!

This week we conducted our Middle School Leaders ceremony and it was great to see so many enthusiastic year 8 and 9 students who are ready to step up and develop their leadership potential. I know these people will really grow in their roles as they work closely with our Senior Leaders. Congratulations to these students and all the best in your new roles this year.

Statewide Principal’s Conference

Last week I spent two days attending a Statewide Principal’s Conference under the leadership of our Director General – Ms Julie Grantham. At these two days there was a very clear message around our focus on school improvement. The theme for the conference was “United in Pursuit of Excellence” and this is exactly how we as Principal left the conference. I have returned to school inspired and full of confidence in the vision Education Queensland has for the future of quality teaching and learning in our school.

At the conference an update on the implementation of the National Curriculum was provided, with rollout in English, Maths, Science, History and HPE due in 2012. Our

school has begun work around the new curriculum and staff have taken up opportunities to familiarise themselves with the programs. I am confident that this will be a very positive step forward for all students.

A report was also provided on the outcomes of the Flying Start meetings which occurred around the State last year. These were conducted by our Assistant Director General – Ms Patrea Walton. She was able to share the feedback from around the State on the consultation around year 7 into High School. There has been no decision released on this as yet.

Debating 2011

This Friday will be the official commencement of the interschool debating season and Corinda State High School will be hosting St Paul’s School in our first round of competition. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage in high level debates and to develop their public speaking skills. We wish our 2011 Debating Team all the very best for the season. Special acknowledgement and thanks must be extended to Dan Fallon for his work in preparing the students and supporting them throughout the competition. Good luck team!

TURN OUT THE LIGHTS ON SATURDAY 26 MARCH FOR EARTH HOUR

Our school will be supporting Earth Hour again in 2011.

From 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March, join our school community and turn out the lights for one hour or longer to show your support.

Individuals, communities, businesses and governments around the world will switch off their lights and other electrical appliances in a collective effort against climate change.

The event, which commenced in Sydney in 2007, has rapidly grown to become a global movement, with individuals from 128 countries and territories supporting the cause in 2010.

Amongst the event’s supporters last year were over 200 schools and Department of Education and Training workplaces.

Don’t forget to register your participation on the Earth Hour website in order to make your action count.

CORINDA SHS SMS MESSAGING AND ATTENDANCE

From 14 March, 2011, parents will be informed by mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) each time their child is away from school / school.

At Corinda SHS, student attendance and safety is a high priority.

We know that students who attend regularly are more likely to be successful and safe at school. To improve our attendance procedures, we will be informing parents/caregivers about any unexplained absences for their child.

The school expects parents/caregiver to contact the school in advance if they know their child is to be absent.

From 14 March, 2011, an SMS text message will be automatically sent to the mobile phones of parents explaining that our records show that your child is absent from school. The message will read as follows:

The message will arrive on the phone displaying the number, “0427016460“. Parents should store this number in their mobile phone under “Corinda SHS” so that when the message arrives, the parent is aware the message has come from the school. This is a text based number only, and is not available for voice mail – please reply to this number using text only.

Parents can then reply by pressing the reply option on your mobile phone when you receive a message from the school and add your son or daughter’s name, year, date of absence and the reason they are absent or late.

eg Steven Scott, Year 11 was sick yesterday (Tuesday 15th November) Text version = “Steven S yr11 sick tues 15 nov” OR by phoning the school office or sending a note explaining the absence.

Once we fully implement Messageyou for absences, some of the other uses could include notification of:

Announcements or reminders of meetings or forthcoming events Band/Choir/Music lesson Reminders Broken down or delayed School bus Reminders to volunteer workers

Updating Parent Mobile Phone Numbers

As part of the process of implementing this exciting new system, the school is seeking your assistance. We already have an extensive list of parent’s mobile numbers; however we would like to make sure our records are fully up-to-date.

At your earliest convenience, please telephone the school on 3379 0222 or via email on [email protected] to provide your family’s current mobile phone numbers.

Thank you for your assistance and co-operation. We look forward to making this exciting transition, and to improving our communication with you.

CORINDA STATE HIGH SCHOOL – A SWPBS SCHOOL

Many people may be wondering if the spell checker got it wrong but I assure you that this anagram will make a world, or rather, school of difference. School-wide Positive Behaviour Support is a proven approach for establishing and strengthening the social culture and behavioural supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for every student, every day.

In the past, school-wide discipline has been largely reactive to inappropriate student behaviours and included the implementation of punishment-based strategies including loss of privileges, referrals and suspensions. SWPBS focuses on developing school-wide, proactive systems to develop a common language for defining what positive behaviour looks like, modelling and teaching appropriate behaviours and to reinforce these positive behaviours with a reward system. Thus encouraging students to develop in their social competence and academic achievement and benefit from increased positive interactions with school staff.

The goal: To establish a climate at Corinda SHS where students want their behaviour to be seen and get caught doing the right thing! GOTCHA!

YEAR 9 NEWS

The year has been a positive start for many of the year 9s!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those parents, students and teachers who attended the Year 9 Meet and Greet evening. I know that there were some important messages conveyed on that night from the Principal, Deputy Principal and Youth Support Staff within the school. Any student who did not attend who would like a Study Planner should come to my staffroom to collect one.

Last week, a team of students from each form class met with the Student Leadership Program staff to put forward their Volunteering proposal. I am very happy to report that we have some very creative minds in the grade who will be venturing into the community in the coming weeks to ‘give back’ and demonstrate their leadership skills through volunteering.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the 24 students who have been appointed as the Year 9 Student Representative Council. This group of students are a keen team of leaders who have already volunteered to be a part of the New Students to Corinda Program that will be run by Aneela Peters (Chaplain) and the Respect & Wellness Committee lead by Mike Dempsey (Guidance Officer).

Keep up the great work Year 9!!

Ms. Amy Scott-Preimonas

YEAR 8 NEWS

January 24th was a day full of excitement, surprises and fun for the year eights of 2011. As weeks have passed by we’ve settled into the new high school routine.

Our first days were full of changes; new friends, teachers, subjects, timetables and many new opportunities. It was only the second week of school, when we saw our group of swimmers compete at the swimming carnival, some of them also going further on to the district and state levels. Others have signed up for Kokoda and Cross-country training. We’ve had many grade eights join the farm team and the instrumental programs. Some of us are part of the debating team, and Reader’s Cup is also coming up soon. However, the highlight of this semester is sure to be year eight camp. Preparations are well under way and we are eagerly looking forward to our stay.

We are all enjoying term 1 and are looking forward to our next five years in Corinda.

THE CREATIVE GENERATION YOUNG ARTISTS’ AWARDS

Corinda State High School has once again demonstrated their excellence in The Arts through 10 students being awarded a Creative Generation Young Artists’ Awards. Only 90 of these awards are given out across Queensland, again proving that Corinda students are capable of achieving excellence in The Art. The Minister for Education and Training will be officially presenting these Drama Awards on the 21st April. Congratulations to Helen Lind, Jarren Howard, Brittany Kemp, Liam Powell, Chantel Dawson, Natalie Warzywoda, Calum Johnson, Cameron Twigge, Mackenzie Pinder and Natarsha Jack who will receive these awards.

The Creative Generation Young Artists’ Awards recognises and celebrates talented students by rewarding them with the opportunity to attend workshops in Brisbane with highly respected artists. In the past this school has rejoiced with dancer Matt Nguyen chosen for Dance excellence, Alex Miller and Lucie Johnson chosen for Contemporary Music excellence, Harrison Radford and Al MacDowell for Drama. This year our Drama award recipients will have the opportunity to audition, once again, for the Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company’s section in Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage 2011, (6 were chosen to be in the show in 2010.)

NATHAN RYE

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT THE ARTS

Hi! I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Nathan Rye and I am new to Corinda SHS as the Head of Department for The Arts. My main subject area is Music, and in my spare time I enjoy performing as a professional guitarist. I've worked in Queensland schools as well as a two-year working holiday as the Head of Music at

Challney High School for Boys in England. I have met many wonderful student artisans at Corinda, there is definitely some real talent here and I am enjoying collaborating with the excellent and energetic Arts faculty staff. I am always happy to talk about The Arts, so if you see me around, please come and say hello

LIBRARY NEWS

Here are some of the highlights of our busy start to the year.

Staff:

We welcome Andrew Morrison as our new Head of Department. Andrew has assumed responsibility for the library on the retirement of Dolor Milford. We wish Dolor well in her retirement and we look forward to working with Andrew.

Jenny Warner also joined us for the first six weeks of term. Her first duties were to assist Denise Weatherhog with the Resource Hire Scheme and then she filled in for Denise while she was on Long Service Leave. We were lucky to have someone who was so conscientious, so cheerful and so ready to learn quickly. Thank you so much for the marvellous job you did, Jenny, and good luck in the future.

Text Books:

Text Books were distributed to all eligible students in the first 3 days of term 1. This was a massive job and I would like to thank all library staff, Lindsay Cumpstay and Jenny Warner (who worked as volunteers) for accomplishing this almost impossible task. If your student has not collected their textbooks yet, please ask them to call to the library at second break with their receipt and any outstanding textbooks from 2010 and we will be happy to ensure that they receive their textbooks. Remember, all teachers will now expect that all students have all textbooks in all subjects. If you have any questions about the Resource Hire Scheme please phone the school immediately.

Corinda State School Year 7 students take over the library:

For the first week of term 1, Year 7 students from Corinda State School shared the library with us. This enabled flood repair work to be carried out at their school. Here is a small sample of the thank you notes they gave us.

From Vy: Thank you for letting Year 7 use the cool air conditioning, the library, toilets, canteen and

oval. As a year 7 student, I appreciate your generosity.

From Amie: Thank you for having us.

From Traim: Thank you for everything you did for us and thank you for your library.

From Vivian: Thanks for letting us borrow the library. Year 7 loves the oval, library, canteen and toilets. I can’t wait to be in high school next year. Thank you.

Teaching and Learning:

Mrs Lanham has spoken with all Year 8 science students about the strategies that good readers use and about ways for making good notes. These skills are important at all year levels and in every subject. Ask your student about the PAATH to good reading – the Purpose for reading, predicting what the text will be About, reviewing what you know about this topic Already, ascertaining what type of Text it is and deciding How to read the text (skimming, scanning or reading for detail). Quickly going over these points before you start reading will make your reading more efficient and more focused.

Reading:

At Corinda, we believe it is very important for students to read every day. Lots of students have come back from the holidays keen to continue reading one of the popular series. We have new books in the following series just arrived or due to arrive any day:

Scorpia rising (Alex Rider series) September, October, November, December

(Conspiracy 365) The Emporer of Nihon-Ja (Ranger’s Apprentice) Grey wolves (Henderson Boys)

Page 7 Corinda State High School Newsletter

Only the good spy young (The Gallagher girls) Tiger Trouble (Extreme Adventures) Fire Lizard (Samurai Kids) Who wants to be a billionaire? Lost (The Floods) Moment of Truth (The Laws of magic) Torment (Fallen) Hourglass, Afterlife (Evernight) The Poison throne (Rebel prince) Angel (Maximum ride)

Students can reserve these books now to ensure that they are the first to read them!

If you would like some tips about helping your students with literacy (our literacy toolkit), please email me at [email protected] and I will be happy to send you a copy.

Internet Safety:

Cybersmart day was held during February. The website http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ provides activities, resources and practical advice to help young kids, kids, teens and parents safely enjoy the online world.

Here is a sample of some suggestions offered for teens:

Keep your personal details private. Use an appropriate handle or username instead of your real name

Don’t share your username or password with anyone.

Think before you hit send or post. Once something is posted, it can be online forever.

Don't post anything you don't want others to know—or that you wouldn’t say to them face to face.

Remember that private images and videos you send to friends or post on a social networking site may be easily passed on to others and uploaded to public sites. Once they’re up, it’s almost impossible to remove them completely.

Respect other people’s content and be aware that if you post or share their content it might breach copyright laws.

Read the terms and conditions of any photo or content sharing sites. Some sites require you to license the material to the site, which might mean that you lose control over your content.

Studying abroad:

If you are interested in studying abroad in the USA, France, Germany, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan or Costa Rica, you might like to pick up a brochure from EF High School Year. They are available in the library.

Calling all poets:

The Ipswich Poetry Fest opens on 3 April, 2011 and closes on 29 July, 2011. They are encouraging poets in the following categories to enter: 11-13 years, 14-15 years, 16-17 years and Open. Poems may be on any subject. See Mrs Lanham for more details and entry forms.

Happy reading

Andrew Morrison, Pam Lanham, Elizabeth Haworth and Denise Weatherhog

HEALTHY BODY HEALTHY MIND

Parents and care givers please be aware that whilst your child may have eaten regular meals while attending primary school there is the potential for this to change on coming to high school. There are many reasons for this, one being heightened self perception re body image and the need to ‘fit in’

Children and adolescents have not escaped the obesity in our society. 25% of Australian children between the ages of 5 years to 17 years are now overweight or obese and are at risk of low self-esteem; raised blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, and ongoing medical problems.

Being overweight is due in most instances to eating more kilojoules than one is burning. For many, today’s life style may be quite sedentary, many hours may be spent watching television, or using a computer whether it be for academic purposes or recreation eg. Surfing the net or playing games. High fat and high kilojoule foods further add to the problem.

The key to weight control is increased physical activity and a low fat, low kilojoule intake that meets the nutritional requirement of the individual. Young children and adolescents have very specific dietary needs as their bodies are still growing, for example, calcium (milk and the small bones of some fish, salmon, sardines), and iron (red meats and green leafy vegetables). It is important that nutritional intake incorporates a variety of foods for optimum nutrition.

Healthy eating habits should be established early and should involve all the family as this makes it much easier for all to comply.

Healthy eating: Provide a low fat family diet based on cereals,

fruit and vegetables. Meat, dairy foods, legumes, nuts are also important.

Reduce high fat processed foods and snacks eg fried foods, chips, pizza, biscuits and pastries.

Make water and milk the preferred drinks. Reduce high sugar foods such as soft drinks,

cordials, lollies and the hidden sugars in foods eg, some “health muesli /fruit bars’ some pasta sauces etc.

Try not to have unhealthy foods at home.

Increase Physical Activity Limit recreational use of computer. Limit use of television. Avoid using transport if walking is possible. Encourage involvement in sports etc. Plan family exercise activities – walking,

swimming etc.

As adults we are the providers and role models. I know that it is difficult with teens as they want to make decisions for themselves and this also includes their nutritional choices. Try to keep an eye on the foods that they bring to school, ensuring that they do actually bring food and are making smart choices the majority of the time. Choosing less healthy foods is acceptable as long as it’s occasional and in small amounts. For those who wish to purchase their food at school our tuck shop provides very healthy choices for our school community.

Need further information: Please see your local doctor / GP or you may contact me through school. Students feel free to see me during recess or organise an appointment.

SENIOR SCHOOLING FACULTY

What’s topical at the moment? WORK EXPERIENCE – Year 10 Thank you to all Year 10 students and their parents who have assisted with finding placements for Work Experience Week (4th-8th of April). Those students who already have placements will receive all the necessary paperwork in the coming week. It is important for us to reflect on the importance of this week as an integral part of the SET PLANNING process. A SET PLAN (Senior Education and Training Plan) is completed by all secondary students and allows them to map out their skills, abilities, likes, dislikes which in turn lead to students’ looking into career aspirations and selecting appropriate subject choices in relation to a certain career. Work experience allows students the opportunity to ‘test’ out a career that may be of interest to them and discover what is really involved day to day. Students who actively engage whilst at work experience will benefit greatly from the experience, even if they decide at the end of the week that the occupation isn’t for them. Students will also develop further skills in relation to time management and planning, self reliance, and communication. In the lead up to work experience we would like to remind our students of some skills and values that employers look for when hiring staff. Next newsletter we hope to add a few more to our list. We ask that you discuss these with your student, and share some of your experiences. 1. Dependability/Reliability/Responsibility. There's no question that all employers desire employees who will arrive to work every day, on time and ready to work, and who will take responsibility for their actions. 2. Positive Attitude/Motivation/Energy/Passion. The job-seekers who get hired and the employees who get promoted are the ones with drive and passion and who demonstrate this enthusiasm through their words and actions.

REMEMBER there will be NO CLASSES scheduled for year 10’s during work experience week and it is an expectation that all students are involved, even if that means they attend YOUR workplace. (Students must have all necessary paperwork completed before the beginning of this week)

Learning Accounts (Yr 10, 11, 12 Students) Students will be issued or reissued with their LUI (Learner Unique identifier) and a password. This will allow them to access their learning account on the CIS website: www.cis.qsa.qld.edu.au. Please encourage your child to check in their learning account to ensure that it is accurate. If your child has been into their learning account and changed their password and forgotten it they will need to see Mr McGregor (DP) to have this reset.
